Successful startup of a full-scale acrylonitrile wastewater biological treatment plant (ACN-WWTP) by eliminating the inhibitory effects of toxic compounds on nitrification.

During the startup of a full-scale anoxic/aerobic (A/O) biological treatment plant for acrylonitrile wastewater, the removal efficiencies of NH(3)-N and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were 1.29 and 0.83% on day 30, respectively. The nitrification process was almost totally inhibited, which was mainly caused by the inhibitory effects of toxic compounds. To eliminate the inhibition, cultivating the bacteria that degrade toxic compounds with patience was applied into the second startup of the biological treatment plant. After 75 days of startup, the inhibitory effects of the toxic compounds on nit

Vibrio cholerae persisted in microcosm for 700 days inhibits motility but promotes biofilm formation in nutrient-poor lake water microcosms.

Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae, ubiquitous in aquatic environments, is responsible for cholera; humans can become infected after consuming food and/or water contaminated with the bacterium. The underlying basis of persistence of V. cholerae in the aquatic environment remains poorly understood despite decades of research. We recently described a "persister" phenotype of V. cholerae that survived in nutrient-poor "filter sterilized" lake water (FSLW) in excess of 700-days. Previous reports suggest that microorganisms can assume a growth advantage in stationary phase (GASP) phenotype in response to lo

Microecological succession and quality enhancement of fermented tomato sour soup by synthetic functional microbiota.

Tomato sour soup, a traditional fermented food with health benefits, often exhibits inconsistent quality during natural fermentation. Three microbial consortia (yeasts, Eurotium, and their combination) were engineered to enhance fermentation. Physicochemical parameters, antioxidant activity, microbial communities, and metabolomic profiles were monitored throughout fermentation. Eurotium inoculation produced the strongest effects, including the highest total acid (21.10 g/kg), total phenolics (75.41 mg/g), and total flavonoids (29.41 mg/g), the lowest nitrite accumulation, and superior DPPH/ABT

Substrate-mediated spatial cooperation in Bacillus-Saccharomyces consortia enhance starch hydrolysis and flavor formation during solid-state fermentation.

Solid-state fermentation is extensively applied in the production of fermented foods, bio-based chemicals, and bioenergy products. However, rational regulation of fermentation performance remains difficult because microbial succession and metabolic labor division are strongly influenced by spatially heterogeneous substrates. The mechanisms through which spatially organized metabolic interactions coordinate substrate conversion and product biosynthesis remain insufficiently understood. Here, using Daqu fermentation as a representative model, temporal transcriptomic analyses revealed a distinct

A novel approach to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge via pre-enrichment by a microbial consortium of degrading fungi.

Both fungi and bacteria contribute to the efficiency of activated sludge processes. However, fungal degradability has historically been overlooked in the anaerobic fermentation of waste-activated sludge (WAS). This study investigated the role of an enriched microbial consortium of degrading fungi (MCDF) in WAS fermentation. MCDF was initially enriched using a mixture of WAS and two mesophilic anaerobic sludges with chitin as the substrate. Fungal diversity and key cell wall polysaccharides, including chitin, mannan, and glucans, were identified in WAS. The addition of enriched MCDF to WAS sign

Metagenomic insights into the diversity of 2,4-dichlorophenol degraders and the cooperation patterns in a bacterial consortium.

2,4-Dichlorophenol, which is largely employed in herbicides and industrial production, is frequently detected in ecosystems and poses risks to human health and environmental safety. Microbial communities are thought to perform better than individual strains in the complete degradation of organic contaminants. However, the synergistic degradation mechanisms of the microbial consortia involved in 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation are still not widely understood. In this study, a bacterial consortium named DCP-2 that is capable of degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol was obtained. Metagenomic analysis, cult

Rapid recovery of methane yield in organic overloaded-failed anaerobic digesters through bioaugmentation with acclimatized microbial consortium.

Acidification during anaerobic digestion (AD) due to organic overloading is one of the major reasons for process failures and decreased methane productivity in anaerobic digesters. Process failures can cause the anaerobic digesters to stall completely, prolong the digester recovery period, and inflict an increased operational cost on wastewater treatment plants and adverse impacts on the environment. This study investigated the efficacy of bioaugmentation by using acclimatized microbial consortium (AC) in recovering anaerobic digesters stalled due to acidosis. Overloading of digesters with foo

Use of beneficial microorganisms in bean cultivation: strategies employed to increase productivity.

The common bean is of great importance for human nutrition worldwide as its grain is a cheap source of protein, but it has a high-cost production system due to the use of synthetic inputs such as nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. An alternative to promote the sustainability of the production system and increase crop productivity is the use of co-inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to reduce and/or replace the use of nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. Since 2010, Brazil has stood out on the international stage with resear

Reduced Antibiotic Resistance in the Rhizosphere of Lupinus albus in Mercury-Contaminated Soil Mediated by the Addition of PGPB.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses a threat to the "One Health" approach. Likewise, mercury (Hg) pollution is a serious environmental and public health problem. Its ability to biomagnify through trophic levels induces numerous pathologies in humans. As well, it is known that Hg-resistance genes and AR genes are co-selected. The use of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can improve plant adaptation, decontamination of toxic compounds and control of AR dispersal. Recent advances in metagenomic analysis of different ecological niches for enhanced biodegradation of recalcitrant lignocellulosic biomass.

Lignocellulose wastes stemming from agricultural residues can offer an excellent opportunity as alternative energy solutions in addition to fossil fuels. Besides, the unrestrained burning of agricultural residues can lead to the destruction of the soil microflora and associated soil sterilization. However, the difficulties associated with the biodegradation of lignocellulose biomasses remain as a formidable challenge for their sustainable management. In this respect, metagenomics can be used as an effective option to resolve such dilemma because of its potential as the next generation sequenci

Herbicide-treated soil as a reservoir of beneficial bacteria: microbiome analysis and PGP bioinoculants in maize.

BACKGROUND: Herbicides are integral to agricultural weed management but can adversely affect non-target organisms, soil health, and microbiome. We investigated the effects of herbicides on the total soil bacterial community composition using 16S rRNA gene amplicon community profiling. Further, we aimed to identify herbicide-tolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities as a mitigative strategy for these negative effects, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices. RESULTS: A bacterial community analysis explored the effects of long-term S-metolachlor application o

Removal of tetrachloroethylene in an anaerobic column bioreactor.

Removal of tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene; C2Cl4) by microbial consortia from two sites with different C2Cl4 exposure histories was examined in a bench-scale anaerobic column bioreactor. It was hypothesized that optimal removal would be observed in the reactor packed with sediments having an extensive exposure history. Microbial consortia were enriched from hyporheic-zone (HZ) sediments from the Portneuf aquifer near Pocatello, Idaho, and from industrial-zone (IZ) sediments from a highly contaminated aquifer in Portland, Oregon. Lactate and acetate were the electron donors during exper

Insights into the bioremediation potential of native Bacillus isolates and their consortia against Iron, Cadmium and Chromium at pH 5.0.

Due to high Sulphur content of coals in Meghalaya, India, coal mining in this region generates huge amount of acidic waste characterized by low pH and leaching of toxic heavy metals which is a major environmental problem. This study involves isolating native Bacillus species from samples of active and abandoned Rat-hole coal mines in order to mitigate these phenomena. These species were then evaluated for significant bioremediation potential in the form of heavy metal binding and adsorption, as well as raising acidic pH to pH 8.0 (basic) under in vitro conditions. Sixteen (16) isolates were in

Preparation and characterization of site-specific dechlorinating microbial inocula capable of complete dechlorination enriched in anaerobic microcosms amended with clay mineral.

Short-chain halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g. perchloroethene, trichloroethene) are among the most toxic environmental pollutants. Perchloroethene and trichloroethene can be dechlorinated to non-toxic ethene through reductive dechlorination by Dehalococcoides sp. Bioaugmentation, applying cultures containing organohalide-respiring microorganisms, is a possible technique to remediate sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. Application of site specific inocula is an efficient alternative solution. Our aim was to develop site specific dechlorinating microbial inocula by enriching micr

Cobamide-based interactions between soil bacteria can be predicted based on monoculture growth.

Interactions between microbes shape the structure and function of microbial communities. While studying interactions is key to understanding microbial communities as a whole, gaining a detailed mechanistic view is challenging due to the number of co-occurring interactions. Here, we focus on a single class of shared nutrients, the cobalamin (vitamin B12) family of enzyme cofactors known as cobamides, to study nutrient interactions in laboratory consortia of increasing complexity. Measuring cobamide-dependent growth of two soil Caulobacter isolates in monoculture revealed that each grows faster

Bacterial consortium construction for inhibition of Salmonella in chickens.

Salmonella enterica is one of the leading causes of bacterial enteritis in humans with consumption of contaminated poultry products being the leading cause of Salmonella infection. Salmonella is often considered a commensal organism within the poultry gut due to its asymptomatic carriage in adult birds making it difficult to clear by the host immune system once established. Understanding the niche Salmonella occupies will aid in the determination or selection for probiotic organisms with overlapping niche occupation metabolically or spatially for inhibition or exclusion of Salmonella within th

Surfactant pollution, an emerging threat to ecosystem: Approaches for effective bacterial degradation.

The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to
