Reframing vector control: land use and climate shape malaria risk in Amazonian communities.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in the Brazilian Amazon, where ecological heterogeneity and socio-economic vulnerability hinder the effectiveness of vector elimination. The primary vector, Nyssorhynchus darlingi, shows substantial spatiotemporal variation influenced by land-use changes and local microclimates. OBJECTIVES: Investigate how land cover and microclimatic factors affect Ny. darlingi human biting rate (HBR) across different Amazonian ecoregions. METHODS: HBR was measured through human landing catches at 70 sites in four ecoregions, with simultaneous temp

Surface protrusions of the microstructured lizard skin may reduce evaporation intensity: Numerical modelling approach.

Evaporative water loss is a critical challenge for terrestrial organisms, particularly those inhabiting arid environments. Many lizards including geckos and chameleons possess nanoscopic hairlike setulae or surface protrusions that may reduce evaporation by modifying the local microclimate near the skin. To investigate this effect, we numerically modeled water evaporation from a substrate covered by periodically structured surfaces mimicking such biological features. The model employs a diffusion equation with a heterogeneous diffusion coefficient and incorporates wind-driven advection to acco

Development of wearable air-conditioned mask for personal thermal management.

A mask that creates a physical barrier to protect the wearer from breathing in airborne bacteria or viruses, reducing the risk of infection in polluted air and potentially contaminated environments, has become a daily necessity for the public especially as COVID-19 has exploded around the world. However, the use of masks often causes soaring temperatures and thick humid air, leading to thermal and wear discomfort and breathing difficulties for a number of people, and further increasing the elevated risk of heat illnesses including heat stroke and heat exhaustion. When wearers become highly act

[Very useful eyeglasses].

Spectacles with moisture chambers for the treatment of dry keratitis. The dry corneal syndrome is very much improved by the creation of a humid "microclimate" maintained by cutaneous transpiration. The placing of spectacles with sealed shells allows these conditions to be achieved. Post operative glasses for aphakic patients. The placing of optical glasses immediately after surgery of the cataract helps the comfort of the aphake very much. These provisional glasses with lateral shells have adjustable, extensible sides, glasses are interchangeable. Centering is excellent.

Petal infrared transmission warms flowers and reduces microbial abundance.

Flowers create distinct internal microclimates, yet how these conditions filter microbial abundance remains poorly understood. We tested whether petal light transmission and internal floral temperature influence microbial abundance in two co-occurring species, Lyonia lucida and Lyonia fruticosa (Ericaceae), which have translucent petal 'windows' that modify internal light environments. We measured internal and external floral temperatures, quantified culturable microbial abundance (yeasts, molds, bacteria), and assessed ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) petal transmission using spectrometry.

Risk factors in habitats of the tick Ixodes ricinus influencing human exposure to Ehrlichia phagocytophila bacteria.

Ixodes ricinus L. (Acari: Ixodida) were sampled during 1996-99 in southern Scotland, on vegetation using cloth drags, on humans by removal from clothing and on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) by searching legs of culled deer. Developmental microclimate was recorded by automatic recorders and questing microclimate by portable instruments during tick collections. Ticks and deer were examined for infection with Ehrlichia phagocytophila bacteria (Rickettsiales) using microscopy and polymerase chain reaction. This pathogen causes tick-borne fever of sheep in Europe and human granulocytic ehrlichi

Drone-based composite risk mapping reveals vegetation-shade interaction and housing typology as key determinants of Aedes habitat risk.

Persistent dengue transmission in tropical cities reflects a complex interplay between environmental microclimates and urban housing structure that supports Aedes mosquito breeding. This study applies drone-based microhabitat risk mapping integrated with a biologically defined Composite Risk Index (CRI) to quantify fine-scale environmental drivers of Aedes habitat risk across distinct residential typologies in Sect.  24, Shah Alam, Malaysia. High-resolution RGB imagery obtained using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro was processed to derive the Brightness Index (BI) as a proxy for shade intensity and the Ex

Occurrence, absorption and metabolism of short chain fatty acids in the digestive tract of mammals.

Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) also named volatile fatty acids, mainly acetate, propionate and butyrate, are the major end-products of the microbial digestion of carbohydrates in the alimentary canal. The highest concentrations are observed in the forestomach of the ruminants and in the large intestine (caecum and colon) of all the mammals. Butyrate and caproate released by action of gastric lipase on bovine milk triacylglycerols ingested by preruminants or infants are of nutritional importance too. Both squamous stratified mucosa of rumen and columnar simple epithelium of intestine absorb rea

Overcoming the Challenge of Support Surface Selection: Utilization of Standards.

Selecting the appropriate support surface for patients continues to challenge clinicians and facilities. The Support Surface Standards Committee has developed and published test methods that allow for informed comparisons among support surface characteristics. The first published standards address the performance characteristics of immersion/envelopment, shear/friction, and microclimate management. This article describes the full body support surface standards development and provides guidance on the use of the outcomes from those standard tests for clinicians and facilities to make more infor

[Experimental bases of the use of pharmacologic agents aimed at higher heat resistance of humans as means of individual protection].

A group of volunteers was exposed to action of heating microclimate (ambient temperature 30 +/- 1 degrees C, relative humidity 35 +/- 5%) and other critical occupation factors (physical loading, personal protective equipment). They received simultaneously one of the medicines: placebo, bemethyl (0.5 g), phenibut (0.25 g), obsidan (0.08 g), or phenibut (0.25 g) combined with obsidan (0.08 g). Combined phenibut (0.25 g) with obsidan (0.08 g) were proved to be the most effective method to increase stability of the human body against studying critical occupational factors.

Impact of tent shade on heat exposures and simulated heat strain for people experiencing homelessness.

Concurrent increases in homelessness and heat intensity, duration, and frequency translate to an urban heat risk trap for the unsheltered population. Homelessness is both a driver and consequence of poor health, co-creating distinct geographies with various risk factors that exacerbate heat vulnerability. We tested the efficacy of different tent shadings over identical tents often observed in the Phoenix area (white bedsheet, mylar, tarp, and aluminum foil) and compared them to a control tent (uncovered) and ambient conditions. We monitored all meteorological variables at all six locations, no

Bark and Ambrosia Beetle (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Diversity Found in Agricultural and Fragmented Forests in Piracicaba-SP, Brazil.

Land use changes and forest fragmentation result in biodiversity loss and displacement, with insects among the most affected groups. Among these, bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) occupy a prominent position due to their close ties to food resources, i.e., trees, and importance as primary decomposers in forest ecosystems. Therefore, our study aimed to document scolytine biodiversity associated with landscape components that vary based on their physical or botanical composition. Bark beetle diversity was sampled monthly for 12 mo in an Atlantic forest remnant and five adjacent vegetation

Patterns and Ecological Mechanisms of Tick-Borne Disease Exposure Risk in Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Maine, United States.

National parks are unique and significant vector-borne pathogen transmission settings, engaging over 300 million people in outdoor recreation per year. In this study, we integrated vector surveys and ecological habitat feature data in spatial models to characterize tick-borne disease exposure risk in Acadia National Park (ANP), Maine. To determine the broad-scale patterns of blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) densities in ANP, we conducted host-seeking tick collections at 114 sites across the park over two years. Using these tick survey data and geospatial landscape featu

Relationship between temperature and relative humidity with CO2 and CH4 concentration and ectoparasite abundance in blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) nests.

The presence of nestlings influences the microclimate inside avian nesting cavities. We explored the relationship between temperature and relative humidity and the abundance of ectoparasites and gas concentrations in blue tit nest boxes during the nestling period by comparing two years with differing climatic conditions. In the second year, we also manipulated the temperature and humidity inside the nest boxes. The average temperature in nest boxes was colder during 2016 than 2017; in the latter, even warmer conditions were attained due to the experimental manipulation of temperature. Carbon d

Long-Term Effects of Berberis thunbergii (Ranunculales: Berberidaceae) Management on Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) Abundance and Borrelia burgdorferi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) Prevalence in Connecticut, USA.

Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii de Candolle; Ranunculales: Berberidaceae) is an exotic invasive shrub that escaped cultivation in the United States and is now permanently established in many eastern and midwestern states. This study examined the long-term impacts of Japanese barberry management on blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say; Acari: Ixodidae) abundances and associated prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi (Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt, and Brenner; Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), the etiologic agent of Lyme disease. At six locations across Connecticut, adult I. scapular

An integrated risk assessment model for indoor air quality impacts on museum exhibits and human health using microclimatic indices and AgNPs treatment.

The quality of indoor air in museums directly influences the conservation of exhibits made of organic materials, but also the health of visitors, employees and restorers. Thus, monitoring the microclimate and identifying non-invasive solutions to limit its impact becomes essential for the protection of movable cultural heritage. Thus, this study aims to monitor ten indicators of indoor air quality and their impact on exhibits, visitors and employees in a museum in Romania. The data obtained were analysed using specific indexes to accurately assess the indoor microclimate risk for both human he

Influence of Household Roof Types on the Development of Plasmodium vivax in Anopheles stephensi Mosquitoes.

Urbanization and microclimate variation in cities can influence mosquito behavior and parasite development, thus affecting malaria transmission. This study investigates how the impact of microclimate variations due to household roof types can aid in the survival of Anopheles stephensi and the development of Plasmodium vivax in an urban slum setting. Understanding these vital environmental interactions is essential for devising effective control strategies to achieve malaria elimination. Anopheles stephensi (F1) mosquitoes were membrane-fed with blood collected from P. vivax-infected patients b

Tick abundance and diversity are substantially lower in thinned vs. unthinned forests in the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, USA.

Forest thinning is a management tool used in the New Jersey Pinelands and elsewhere to improve forest health and resilience, mitigate wildfire risk, and manage for wildlife. Forest thinning leads to warmer drier microclimates, which have been shown in both field and laboratory studies to reduce tick survival and reproduction. To directly assess the effects of forest thinning on the abundance and diversity of ticks and on the prevalence of tick-borne human pathogens, we sampled ticks weekly from March to November 2021 at three replicated pairs of thinned and unthinned forest sites composed prim

Evaluation of PepT1 transport of food-derived antihypertensive peptides, Ile-Pro-Pro and Leu-Lys-Pro using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo transport models.

Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP) and Leu-Lys-Pro (LKP) are food-derived antihypertensive peptides which inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and may have potential to attenuate hypertension. There is debate over their mechanism of uptake across small intestinal epithelia, but paracellular and PepT1 carrier-mediated uptake are thought to be important routes. The aim of this study was to determine their routes of intestinal permeability using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo intestinal models. The presence of an apical side pH of 6.5 (mimicking the intestinal acidic microclimate) and of Gly-Sar (a high aff
