Characteristics of the pulmonary microbiota in patients with mild and severe pulmonary infection.

BACKGROUND: Lung infection is a global health problem associated with high morbidity and mortality and increasing rates of hospitalization. The correlation between pulmonary microecology and infection severity remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in lung microecology and potential biomarkers in patients with mild and severe pulmonary infection. METHOD: Patients with pulmonary infection or suspected infection were divided into the mild group (140 cases) and the severe group (80 cases) according to pneomonia severity index (PSI) scores. Here,

Infectious granulomatous dermatitis associated with Rothia mucilaginosa bacteremia: A case report.

Infections with rare pathogens are being recognized with increasing frequency in severely immunocompromised patients. As a result of these patients' underlying compromised defenses and susceptibility to atypical organisms, tissue biopsies from patients within this population may demonstrate nonclassical histopathological findings. Here, we describe an unusual granulomatous reaction to gram-positive cocci in the skin of a 52-year-old man undergoing salvage chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia. The patient presented with a papular eruption on the arms, trunk, and face and fever; concomitant b

Specific alterations in the gut microbiome and metabolome across disease locations of Crohn's disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) exhibits substantial heterogeneity in disease behavior and therapeutic outcomes across distinct disease locations. Specific alterations in the gut microbiota and metabolites may drive this variation. This review aims to characterize the distinctive microbial and metabolic signatures across CD phenotypes based on disease location. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched from inception to December 2025 for studies that observed alterations in gut microbiota and metabolites in CD patients with different disease locations. RESULTS: Forty-eight studies includi

Gastric microbiota-specific signatures in adults with obesity and Helicobacter pylori-negative gastritis.

BACKGROUND: The role of the gastric microbiome in the pathophysiology of gastritis beyond Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is poorly understood and has remained unexplored in patients with obesity. The aim of this study was to analyse gastric mucosa-associated microbiota in patients with obesity and nonatrophic chronic gastritis in the absence of HP infection or history of HP eradication. METHODS: This was a case-control study conducted at Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in Malaga, performed in patients with severe obesity (body mass index ≥40 kg/m2) undergoing sleeve gastrectomy,

Radiation-resistant and desiccation-tolerant bacteria from the Chavara-Neendakara high background radiation area, india: phenotypic characterisation and genomic insights.

Radiation-resistant microorganisms that survive high doses of ionising radiation serve as valuable models for understanding stress adaptation; however, the genomic determinants underlying extreme radiation tolerance in bacteria from natural environments with high background radiation remain insufficiently characterised. Bacterial isolates from the Chavara-Neendakara HBRA (Kerala, India) were evaluated for desiccation tolerance, and the desiccation-resistant isolates were subsequently exposed to gamma irradiation (1-10 kGy) using a 60Co source. Isolates were identified through 16S rRNA sequenci

Evaluation of the bacterial ocular surface microbiome in ophthalmologically normal dogs prior to and following treatment with topical neomycin-polymyxin-bacitracin.

The ocular surface microbiome of veterinary species has not been thoroughly characterized using molecular-based techniques, such as next generation sequencing (NGS), as the vast majority of studies have utilized traditional culture-based techniques. To date, there is one pilot study evaluating the ocular surface of healthy dogs using NGS. Furthermore, alterations in the ocular surface microbiome over time and after topical antibiotic treatment are unknown. The objectives of this study were to describe the bacterial composition of the ocular surface microbiome in clinically normal dogs, and to

Rothia spp.: An unusual cause of infective endocarditis.

INTRODUCTION: Rothia spp. are commensal organisms involved in serious infections such as infective endocarditis (IE). There is a significant lack of information regarding de clinical course and management of Rothia spp. IE in immunocompetent patients. METHODS: This study describes 11 cases of Rothia spp. bacteremia over a 10-year period in a secondary hospital, analyzing clinical, demographic, and microbiological data. True infection was defined based on clinical signs, microbiological criteria, and radiological evidence. RESULTS: Three cases (27.3%) were confirmed as true infections, all pr

Profiling the transcriptome response of Atlantic salmon head kidney to formalin-killed Renibacterium salmoninarum.

Renibacterium salmoninarum is a Gram-positive, intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The host transcriptomic response to this immune-suppressive pathogen remains poorly understood. To identify R. salmoninarum-responsive genes, Atlantic salmon were intraperitoneally injected with a low (5 × 105 cells/kg, Low-Rs) or high (5 × 107 cells/kg; High-Rs) dose of formalin-killed R. salmoninarum bacterin or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS control); head kidney samples were collected before and 24 h after injection. Infections by Renibacterium salmoninarum and Nanophyetus salmincola Chapin are associated with reduced growth of juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.

We examined 1454 juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), captured in nearshore waters off the coasts of Washington and Oregon (USA) from 1999 to 2004 for infection by Renibacterium salmoninarum, Nanophyetus salmincola Chapin and skin metacercariae. The prevalence and intensities for each of these infections were established for both yearling and subyearling Chinook salmon. Two metrics of salmon growth, weight residuals and plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor-1, were determined for salmon infected with these pathogens/parasites, both individually and in combination,

Tracking bacteriome variation over time in Listeria monocytogenes-positive foci in food industry.

The variation in microbial composition over time was assessed in biofilms formed in situ on selected non-food and food contact surfaces of meat and fish industries, previously identified as Listeria monocytogenes-positive foci. First, all samples were analysed for the detection and quantification of L. monocytogenes using ISO 11290-1 and ISO 11290-2 norms, respectively. Although the pathogen was initially detected in all samples, direct quantification was not possible. Psychrotrophic bacteria counts were among resident microbiota in meat industry samples (Meanmax = 6.14 log CFU/cm2) compared t

Microbiome and metabolome associated with white spot lesions in patients treated with clear aligners.

White spot lesions (WSLs) have long been a noteworthy complication during orthodontic treatment. Recently, an increasing number of orthodontists have found that adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment with clear aligners are at a higher risk of developing WSLs. The oral microbiota and metabolites are considered the etiologic and regulatory factors of WSLs, but the specific impact of clear aligners on the oral microbiota and metabolites is unknown. This study investigated the differences in the salivary microbiome and metabolome between adolescents with and without WSLs treated with clear

Intranasal exposure to commensal bacterium Rothia mucilaginosa protects against influenza A virus infection.

The respiratory tract hosts a diverse microbial community whose composition varies with anatomical location and throughout life. Rothia mucilaginosa, a common commensal of the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity, has recently been recognized for its ability to inhibit bacteria-triggered pro-inflammatory responses. However, its role in modulating the immune response to viral infections such as influenza A virus (IAV) pneumonia, remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that R. mucilaginosa enhances protection against IAV, promoting viral clearance, reducing inflammation, preserving bronchial an

Monomicrobial Rothia spp. Bloodstream Infections in Pediatric Patients and Literature Review.

We examined 51 monomicrobial Rothia spp. blood cultures from 2015 to 2024. Seventy-one percent occurred in cancer/hematopoietic cell transplantation patients, of which 97% were treated as true bloodstream infections and 78% followed recent broad-spectrum antibiotics. Prolonged (>4 day) fever was common. Routine Rothia spp. susceptibility testing is warranted to gauge antibiotic-driven breakthrough infection.

Rothia mucilaginosa bacteraemia in an immunocompetent paediatric patient: a new pathogen to take into account. A case report.

Rothia mucilaginosa, previously known as Stomatococcus mucilaginosus, is a Gram-positive coccus that is part of the oropharyngeal microbiota and upper respiratory tract. It is mainly related to infections in immunosuppressed patients. Given its complex microbiological identification, its prevalence may be underestimated. We describe in this article a case of bacteraemia by Rothia in an immunocompetent paediatric patient without epidemiological or medical relevant history. In the available literature no cases of bacteraemia by Rothia mucilaginosa in immunocompetent paediatric patients have been

Catheter-related bloodstream infection by Kocuria rhizophila in a dialysis patient.

Catheter related bloodstream infections are a common concern in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. We report a case of CKD with an indwelling left IJV Permacath who developed fever and chills during dialysis. Investigations showed leukocytosis, elevated CRP (75 mg/L), and procalcitonin (9.1 ng/mL). Paired blood cultures grew Kocuria rhizophila, identified by MALDI-TOF, with a two-hour difference in positivity indicating CRBSI. Vancomycin led to improvement and antibiotic lock therapy was initiated. This case highlights that rare organisms such as K. rhizophila can be true pathogens i
