An improved microcomputer program for finding gene- or gene family-specific oligonucleotides suitable as primers for polymerase chain reactions or as probes.

We present here an easy-to-use computer program which finds oligonucleotides suitable as primers in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) or as probes for hybridization. In contrast to other programs used for this purpose, the additional advantage of this one is the possibility of directly detecting gene- as well as gene family-specific oligonucleotides. For this purpose, up to 200 different DNA sequences, of maximally 65,000 nucleotides each, can be scanned in a single search to ensure either single or multiple gene binding of the PCR primers or probes. Specific oligonucleotides for genes carrying

Microcomputed tomography analysis of root canal morfology of hypomineralized permanent molars compared with healthy teeth: unveiling hidden anatomical variations.

BACKGROUND: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a prevalent developmental enamel defect that frequently affects permanent molars and is associated with increased dentin permeability, hypersensitivity, and a higher risk of pulpal inflammation. These clinical features may necessitate endodontic treatment at an early age; however, information regarding potential variations in root canal morphology in MIH-affected molars remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the root canal morphology of hypomineralized permanent molars and compare it with that of healthy molars via microcomputed t

Estimation of an early meaningful time point of bone parameter changes in application to an osteoporotic rat model with in vivo microcomputed tomography measurements.

The commonly used preclinical animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis is the mature ovariectomized rat, whereby cessation of ovarian oestrogen production consequently results in bone volume reduction. The study aim was to precisely define the time course of structural changes resulting from ovariectomy and thereby reduce the time animals have to be treated to judge the effects of osteoporosis treatment. For this purpose, we assessed architectural changes by microcomputed tomography (μCT) during 10 weeks following ovariectomy or sham surgery at two-week intervals. Moreover, the trabecular m

Trabecular bone porosity and pore size distribution in osteoporotic patients - A low field nuclear magnetic resonance and microcomputed tomography investigation.

The study of bone morphology is of great importance as bone morphology is influenced by factors such as age and underlying comorbidities and is associated with bone mechanical properties and fracture risk. Standard diagnostic techniques used in bone disease, such as Dual-Energy X-ray absorptiometry and ultrasonography do not provide qualitative and quantitative morphological information. In recent years, techniques such as High Resolution Computed Tomography (HR-CT), micro- CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Low Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF-NMR) have been developed for the study

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 28. Effects of high and low water fluoridation on orthodontic root resorption: A microcomputed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Transient inflammatory surface resorption, referred to as orthodontic induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), is an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Systemic fluoride has been associated with a reduction of OIIRR. This study aimed to investigate the effects of water fluoridation levels on OIIRR in a clinically applicable human orthodontic model. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who required bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction as part of orthodontic treatment were selected from 2 cities with high and low water fluoridation of ≥2 ppm and ≤0.05 pp

Nondestructive Assessment of Growing Rat Tibial Mechanical Properties Under Three-Point Bending: A Microcomputed Tomography Based Finite Element Study.

Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) based finite element models (FEM) are efficient tools to assess bone mechanical properties. Although they have been developed for different animal models, there is still a lack of data for growing rat long bone models. This study aimed at developing and calibrating voxel-based FEMs using micro-CT scans and experimental data. Twenty-four tibiae were extracted from rats aged 28, 56, and 84 days old (d.o.) (n = 8/group), and their stiffness values were evaluated using three-point bending tests. Prior to testing, tibiae were scanned, reconstructed, and converted

Age-dependent characterization of carotid and cerebral artery geometries in a transgenic mouse model of sickle cell anemia using ultrasound and microcomputed tomography.

To define morphological changes in carotid and cerebral arteries in sickle cell transgenic mice (SS) as they age, a combination of ultrasound and microcomputed tomography of plastinated arteries was used to quantify arterial dimensions and changes in mice 4, 12, and 24 weeks of age. 12-week SS mice had significantly larger common carotid artery diameters than AS mice, which continued through to the extracranial and intracranial portions of the internal carotid artery (ICA). There were also side specific differences in diameters between the left and right vessels. Significant ICA tapering along

The extent of root resorption and tooth movement following the application of ascending and descending magnetic forces: a prospective split mouth, microcomputed-tomography study.

OBJECTIVE: Various factors have been examined in the literature in an attempt to reduce the incidence and severity of root resorption. The purpose of the present investigation is to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in relation to force level using gradually increasing (ascending) and decreasing (descending) orthodontic force generated by magnets on the severity of Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Iatrogenic Root Resorption (OIIRR) and amount of tooth movement. METHODS: Twenty maxillary first premolars from 10 patients were subjected to ascending (25-225 g, magnets in a

Evaluation of a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) titanium composite interbody spacer in an ovine lumbar interbody fusion model: biomechanical, microcomputed tomographic, and histologic analyses.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The most commonly used materials used for interbody cages are titanium metal and polymer polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Both of these materials have demonstrated good biocompatibility. A major disadvantage associated with solid titanium cages is their radiopacity, limiting the postoperative monitoring of spinal fusion via standard imaging modalities. However, PEEK is radiolucent, allowing for a temporal assessment of the fusion mass by clinicians. On the other hand, PEEK is hydrophobic, which can limit bony ingrowth. Although both PEEK and titanium have demonstrated clinical

Microcomputed tomographic analysis of human condyles in unilateral condylar hyperplasia: increased cortical porosity and trabecular bone volume fraction with reduced mineralisation.

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia or hyperactivity is a disorder of growth that affects the mandible, and our aim was to visualise the 3-dimensional bony microstructure of resected mandibular condyles of affected patients. We prospectively studied 17 patients with a clinical presentation of progressive mandibular asymmetry and an abnormal single-photon emission computed tomographic (SPECT) scan. All patients were treated by condylectomy to arrest progression. The resected condyles were scanned with micro-CT (18 μm resolution). Rectangular volumes of interest were selected in 4 quadrants (laterom
