Simultaneous inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa and degradation of microcystin-LR via a p-p ZnCo2O4/Cu2O S-scheme photocatalyst: Mechanism and "Adsorption-Oxidation-Lysis" pathway.

The remediation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms faces a critical challenge: balancing rapid inactivation with the elimination of secondary pollution caused by released toxins. To address this, a novel p-p type S-scheme heterojunction, comprising spinel ZnCo2O4 nanoparticles anchored on cubic Cu2O (7.5ZCO/CO), was rationally constructed via an ethanol-assisted interfacial engineering strategy. Advanced characterization, including in-situ irradiated XPS and Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, provided unambiguous atomic-level evidence for a built-in electric field that drives a robust, directi

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter from Wildfire-induced Microcystis aeruginosa Blooms controlled by Copper Sulfate as Disinfection Byproduct Precursors Using APPI(-) and ESI(-) FT-ICR MS.

Copper-based algaecides are usually used for controlling algae bloom triggered by the elevated levels of nutrients after wildfires, resulting in the promoted reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in forming disinfectant byproducts (DBPs). To identify the best strategy for handling this source water, we employed Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to characterize the DBPs precursors after 4-d Microcystis aeruginosa bloom cultured with black (BE) and white (WE) ash water extracts under 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mg-Cu/L. The disappeared DOM during disinfections, p

Key drivers of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria in South Korean eutrophic waters determined with data-driven models.

The rise in cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs), driven by eutrophication and climate change, necessitates understanding cyanotoxin conditions to mitigate risks. However, limited studies have explored the influencing factors of cyanobacterial community and cyanotoxins in freshwaters using large datasets and data-driven models (DDMs). This study examines cyanobacterial composition across regions and relates it to microcystin-LR, -RR, -LA, -YR, -LF, and -LY as well as to the taste and odor compounds geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. It also assesses the impact of environmental factors usin

[Tuberculosis of the urinary bladder: a literature review. Part 2].

Issues of etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostics of tuberculous bladder lesions were discussed in the first part of the review. The presence of a "small contracted" bladder, regardless of etiology, is an indication for surgical treatment, including tuberculous microcystis. The surgeons main task is to select the optimal surgical approach in each case. An ileal segment is considered the best material for urinary reservoir reconstruction. Supratrigonal cystectomy with augmentation and radical cystectomy with orthotopic reconstruction are the most common procedures for tuberculous microcystis. I

The efficiency of combined coagulant and ballast to remove harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a tropical shallow system.

We tested the hypothesis that a combination of coagulant and ballast could be efficient for removal of positively buoyant harmful cyanobacteria in shallow tropical waterbodies, and will not promote the release of cyanotoxins. This laboratory study examined the efficacy of coagulants [polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and chitosan (made of shrimp shells)] alone, and combined with ballast (lanthanum modified bentonite, red soil or gravel) to remove the natural populations of cyanobacteria collected from a shallow eutrophic urban reservoir with alternating blooms of Cylindrospermopsis and Microcystis.

Novel insights into cyanobacterial (microcystins) neurotoxicity in rats: hepatic encephalopathy.

Microcystis, a commonly occurring genus of bloom-forming cyanobacteria, can produce numerous secondary metabolites, including microcystins (MCs), which are hepatotoxic and neurotoxic to humans and animals. However, the mechanisms of cyanobacterial neurotoxicity associated with MCs have not yet been clarified. This study reports the first observations of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) after exposure to Microcystis bloom extracts (MEs), which contained MCs. Mechanisms of toxicity were studied in rats exposed to MEs by use of a single intraperitoneal injection of 80 μg MC-LR equivalents/kg, body mas

Blue-green algae toxicosis in cattle.

Twenty-four of 175 heifers died after ingesting water from a stock pond containing blue-green algae (genus Microcystis) in southern Colorado. Affected cattle were found dead or had signs of nervousness, and were recumbent, weak, anorectic, and hypersensitive to noise when first examined. All cattle died within 3 days after the onset of signs. At necropsy, the rumen contained blue-green algae, and the liver was larger than normal, friable, and dark red. The most important histologic lesion was hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis. Intraperitoneal administration of lyophilized cell material from

Dissolved organic nitrogen, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria in two eutrophic lakes: Analysis by inferential modelling.

The Lake Suwa (Japan) has a history of non-N-fixing Microcystis blooms. Lake Kinneret (Israel) experienced multiannual periods of sole domination by the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense and periods dominated seasonally by P. gatunense or cyanobacteria. Extensive studies have been carried out in both lakes regarding the role of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus as drivers of primary productivity. There is growing evidence that dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) compounds also influence not only biomass and structure of phytoplankton communities but also microcystin production. This s

The taxonomy and phylogenetics of the human and animal pathogen Rhinosporidium seeberi: a critical review.

Rhinosporidum seeberi is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, a disease of mucous membranes and infrequent of the skin and other tissues of humans and animals. Because it resists culture, for more than 100 years true taxonomic identity of R. seeberi has been controversial. Three hypotheses in a long list of related views have been recently introduced: 1) a prokaryote cyanobacterium in the genus Microcystis is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, 2) R. seeberi is a eukaryote pathogen in the Mesomycetozoa and 3) R. seeberi is a fungus. The reviewed literature on the electron microscopic,

Differentiated fatty acid allocation of Daphnia magna helped to maintain their population under food quality deterioration.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are vital to the physiological functioning of crustacean zooplankton. However, cyanobacteria blooms frequently lead to PUFA deficiencies, which poses a substantial challenge to population fitness. Therefore, we hypothesize that D. magna adapt to PUFA-deficient conditions by prioritizing PUFA allocation to somatic growth, and then to offspring during reproduction to ensure population persistence. To test this hypothesis, we applied (compound-specific) 13C labeling to compare the turnover of total carbon and certain groups of fatty acids in Daphnia magna fed w

Bacterial Contribution to Hydrogen Peroxide Decomposition in Lake Erie Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom Communities Is Dependent on Bloom Stage.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) are expanding globally and often involve toxin-producing species such as Microcystis aeruginosa that pose ecological and public health risks. Some cyanobacteria, including some strains of M. aeruginosa, lack antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, making them more reliant on associated bacteria for reactive oxygen species (ROS) decomposition. To evaluate bacterial contribution to oxidative stress defence in Microcystis blooms across stages of bloom development, we conducted a time-series incubation after a pulse of elevated hydrogen peroxide spanning t

Regulation of the Nutrient Cycle Pathway and the Microbial Loop Structure by Different Types of Dissolved Organic Matter Decomposition in Lakes.

To explore the effect of different types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) decomposition on nutrient cycling pathways and the microbial loop, four lakes with different DOM sources were investigated monthly. In Lake Tangxun, Dolichospermum decay released highly labile dissolved organic nitrogen into the water column. This induced bacterial organic nitrogen decomposition, as indicated by the increased abundance of gltB, gltD, gdh, and glnA as well as aminopeptidase activity. Genes associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium further fueled ammonium accumulation, driving Microcysti

Allergenic (sensitization, skin and eye irritation) effects of freshwater cyanobacteria--experimental evidence.

Many studies have been published on the human health effects of cyanobacterial toxicity. As a public health concern, we have to mention that the development of contact dermatitis, asthmalike symptoms, and symptoms resembling hay fever during bathing in cyanobacterial blooms have been also described. Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii are the most common species found in Hungarian freshwaters. A sensitization test on albino guinea pigs, and intradermal reactivity, and occular irritation test on albino rabbits were carried ou

UV-B-Heavy Metal Interaction: Comparative Evaluation on Photosynthetic Properties of Three Cyanobacteria.

Gradual increase in UV-B component reaching earth surface together with heavy metal contamination appears to be a serious environmental concern. Differential sensitivity in photosynthetic characters of Anabaena doliolum, Microcystis sp., and Nostoc muscorum were observed following exposure to UV-B radiation and heavy metals (Cd and Zn) which displayed reduced photosynthesis with maximum inhibition in Anabaena. PSII was the most sensitive component of the electron transport chain depicting 84, 80, and 70 % inhibition in A. doliolum, Microcystis sp., and N. muscorum, respectively. Cadmium and UV

Evidence of freshwater algal toxins in marine shellfish: Implications for human and aquatic health.

The occurrence of freshwater harmful algal bloom toxins impacting the coastal ocean is an emerging threat, and the potential for invertebrate prey items to concentrate toxin and cause harm to human and wildlife consumers is not yet fully recognized. We examined toxin uptake and release in marine mussels for both particulate and dissolved phases of the hepatotoxin microcystin, produced by the freshwater cyanobacterial genus Microcystis. We also extended our experimental investigation of particulate toxin to include oysters (Crassostrea sp.) grown commercially for aquaculture. California mussels

Controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a hyper-eutrophic lake (Lake Taihu, China): the need for a dual nutrient (N & P) management strategy.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms, reflecting advanced eutrophication, are spreading globally and threaten the sustainability of freshwater ecosystems. Increasingly, non-nitrogen (N(2))-fixing cyanobacteria (e.g., Microcystis) dominate such blooms, indicating that both excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads may be responsible for their proliferation. Traditionally, watershed nutrient management efforts to control these blooms have focused on reducing P inputs. However, N loading has increased dramatically in many watersheds, promoting blooms of non-N(2) fixers, and altering lake nutrient

Culture of the organism that causes rhinosporidiosis.

The causative agent of rhinosporidiosis is a microscopic round body in polypoidal masses that is believed to be the sporangium of a fungus Rhinosporidium seeberi. But fungal aetiology can not be proved with certainty. Attempts to culture the fungus on various media have also been unsuccessful. In a recent study pond water samples, from water in which patients had been bathing, were analysed and a unicellular prokaryotic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa was isolated. The same cyanobacterium was demonstrated in clinical samples from patients with rhinosporidiosis. Consequent to these findin

Field-Scale Suppression of Cyanobacterial Blooms by Cationic Polymer-Modified Local Soil: Selective Inactivation Mechanism and Ecological Responses.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms require control strategies that suppress bloom-forming taxa while limiting effects on non-target primary producers and toxin-related risks. We developed a cationic polyquaternium (P126)-engineered local red-soil composite and evaluated its electrokinetic properties, taxon-dependent photophysiological effects, activity against colonial Microcystis, robustness to water chemistry, short-term Danio rerio responses, and field-scale performance. P126 modification reversed soil surface charge to the range of +20 to +33 mV across a pH range of 6.0-10.0, generating a stron

Synergistic interactions between biogenic organic matter and microbial dynamics during simulated senescent cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater mesocosms.

One of the major consequences of a phytoplanktonic bloom is the massive release of autochthonous organic matter (OM) into the water column, stimulating heterotrophic microbial activity and disrupting the trophic web. To better understand the consequences of such biotic stress, the senescent phase of a bloom was simulated under semi-controlled conditions through the addition of cyanobacterial-derived OM from Microcystis aeruginosa and Aphanizomenon gracile (30% enrichment as eq C) into lake water mesocosms. By following both the autochthonous OM and the microbial communities during 28 days, we

[Analysis of Genus-level Algal Breakthrough Patterns and Odor Source Tracking in Drinking Water Treatment Processes Using Machine Learning Approach].

To address heterogeneous algal removal efficacy at the genus level and synergistic odor control challenges in drinking water treatment processes, this study conducted comprehensive 8-month (April to November) full-process monitoring at a typical water treatment plant. By integrating random forest regression with SHAP interpretable machine learning, we systematically analyzed removal patterns of 32 algal genera across coagulation-sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection processes while achieving biological source tracking of algae-derived odorants. The results showed that coagulation-sedimen
