Maternal micronutrients, omega-3 fatty acids, and placental PPARγ expression.

An altered one-carbon cycle is known to influence placental and fetal development. We hypothesize that deficiency of maternal micronutrients such as folic acid and vitamin B12 will lead to increased oxidative stress, reduced long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, and altered expression of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPARγ) in the placenta, and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation to these diets will increase the expression of PPARγ. Female rats were divided into 5 groups: control, folic acid deficient, vitamin B12 deficient, folic acid deficient + omega-3 fatty acid supplemented

Micronutrients in African-Americans with decompensated and compensated heart failure.

Heart failure is thought to be more common and of greater severity in African-Americans (AAs). Potential mechanisms remain uncertain. The importance of micronutrient deficiencies in the pathophysiologic expression of congestive heart failure (CHF) in AAs remains to be explored, including hypovitaminosis D, which can promote secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), together with hypozincemia and hyposelenemia, the 2 most crucial trace minerals integral to diverse biologic functions. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), Zn, and Se were monitored in 30 AAs hospitalized dur

Antioxidant micronutrients in major trauma and burns: evidence and practice.

There has been a growing interest in micronutrients as a result of their essential role in endogenous antioxidant defense mechanisms and immunity. Critically ill burn and trauma patients are characterized by an increased free radical production, which is proportional to the severity of the injury. In addition, they are at high risk of negative trace element balances, which contribute to the imbalance in endogenous antioxidant capacity and the extension of primary lesions. Although selenium, zinc, and vitamin C and E status are altered in all injured patients, patients with major burns are uniq

Micronutrients in women's reproductive health: II. Minerals and trace elements.

It is widely accepted that micronutrients have a major function in many periods of women's life, particularly during pregnancy and lactation. Inadequate stores or intake of micronutrients might have adverse effects both to the mother (hypertension, anemia, complications of labor) and the fetus (congenital malformations, pre-term delivery, intrauterine growth retardation). The effect of improper nutrition is influenced by gestational age, severity of deficiency, or both. Generally, the daily requirements in minerals and trace elements are easily met in women having a balanced diet. Such diet du

[Micronutrients status of Ile-de-France inhabitants. A literature review].

PURPOSE: A review of the literature about micronutrients status of Ile-de-France inhabitants. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS: During the last decades, substantial changes in the French diet had an impact on micronutrients intake. Over this time, several studies conducted in Ile-de-France showed that a large part of its inhabitants is subject to an increased risk of mild to severe deficiency in one or more micronutrient(s). Teenagers and subjects over 70 years-old are groups at risk for vitamin D deficiency. During the 1980s, iron intake was insufficient in a majority of menstruating women a

Serum micronutrients and cervical dysplasia in Southwestern American Indian women.

We carried out a clinic-based case-control study to assess serum micronutrients as risk factors for cervical dysplasia among Southwestern American Indian women, a group with high rates of cervical preinvasive lesions. Cases were American Indian women with biopsy-proven cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN I or CIN II/III). Controls were from the same Indian Health Service clinics with normal cervical epithelium. We interviewed women about histories of sexually transmitted diseases, sexual behavior, diet, hygienic practices, cigarette smoking, and reproductive factors. Laboratory assays incl

Nutrition and development: other micronutrients' effect on growth and cognition.

Previous studies have provided strong evidence that protein-energy malnutrition, deficiencies of iron and iodine early on in life led to compromised growth and cognitive functions in young children. Recently, a growing body of knowledge indicated that other micronutrients also play a role in young child development. Severe as well as marginal vitamin A efficiency were shown to lead to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality in children. A meta-analysis of vitamin A intervention trials indicated an overall reduction of 23% in all-cause mortality rate. Delayed growth, especially stunting, w

[Micronutrients in severe septic aggression. Their usefulness as prognostic markers].

The object of this is to evaluate the influence of several micronutrients on the survival rate of septic patients following abdominal surgery. A retrospective assessment was done of sixty-one patients suffering from neoplastic or non-neoplastic pathology associated to septicemia. On admission the following parameters were determined: number of total lymphocytes, serum albumin, transferrin, zinc, copper, magnesium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and copper/zinc levels. The differences obtained between surviving and non-surviving patients were analyzed. The most relevant findings revealed statistica

Undernutrition and lepromatous leprosy. III. Micronutrients and their transport proteins.

The present report is a continuation of our earlier studies on the complex interaction between undernutrition and leprosy. Serum levels of vitamins A and E, zinc and iron were determined in healthy control subjects and lepromatous leprosy patients belonging to an eastern state of India. Results indicated a significant lowering in the two above-mentioned fat-soluble vitamins and also a remarkable hypozincaemia in the patient group. However, serum iron levels were found to be comparable in both the groups. Also concentrations of vitamin A transport proteins such as retinol binding protein and pr

Methyl donor micronutrients, hypothalamic development and programming for metabolic disease.

Nutriture in utero is essential for fetal brain development through the regulation of neural stem cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, and has a long-lasting impact on risk of disease in offspring. This review examines the role of maternal methyl donor micronutrients in neuronal development and programming of physiological functions of the hypothalamus, with a focus on later-life metabolic outcomes. Although evidence is mainly derived from preclinical studies, recent research shows that methyl donor micronutrients (e.g., folic acid and choline) are critical for neuronal developm

Bioinorganic Chemistry of Micronutrients Related to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases.

Metal ions are fundamental to guarantee the regular physiological activity of the human organism. Similarly, vitamins play a key role in many biological functions of the metabolism, among which are coenzymes, redox mediators, and antioxidants. Due to their importance in the human organism, both metals and vitamins have been extensively studied for their involvement in neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). However, the full potential of the interaction between vitamins and metal ions has not been fully explored by researchers yet, and further investigation on this topic is needed. The aim of this r

The Role of Sulfur in Agronomic Biofortification with Essential Micronutrients.

Sulfur (S) is an essential macronutrient for plants, being necessary for their growth and metabolism and exhibiting diverse roles throughout their life cycles. Inside the plant body, S is present either in one of its inorganic forms or incorporated in an organic compound. Moreover, organic S compounds may contain S in its reduced or oxidized form. Among others, S plays roles in maintaining the homeostasis of essential micronutrients, e.g., iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn). One of the most well-known connections is homeostasis between S and Fe, mainly in terms of the role o

Recurrent Diabetic Ketoacidosis following Bariatric Surgery: The Role of Micronutrients.

We report a case of a 29-year-old woman admitted twice to our hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) within 45 days following her bariatric surgery. The first admission required intensive care during her postoperative days after bariatric surgery. Subsequently, she continued to report high level of ketones on a daily basis. At her second admission, she presented with all three criteria of DKA. She was treated with a standard protocol for DKA, but ketones plasma level remained high despite significant improvement in pH and glycemic control. The administration of thiamine replacement was asso

Rice with Multilayer Aleurone: A Larger Sink for Multiple Micronutrients.

Diet-related noncommunicable diseases impose a heavy burden on human health worldwide. Rice is a good target for diet-related disease prevention strategies because it is widely consumed. Liu et al. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 115(44):11327-11332, 2018. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1806304115 ) demonstrated that increasing the number of cell layers and thickness of putative aleurone in ta2-1 (thick aleurone 2-1) mutant rice enhances simultaneously the content of multiple micronutrients. However, the increases of aleurone-associated nutrients were not proportional to the increases in the aleurone th

Breast Milk Micronutrients and Infant Neurodevelopmental Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

Micronutrients are fundamental for healthy brain development and deficiencies during early development can have a severe and lasting impact on cognitive outcomes. Evidence indicates that undernourished lactating individuals may produce breast milk containing lower concentrations of certain vitamins and minerals. Exclusively breastfed infants born to mothers deficient in micronutrients may therefore be at risk of micronutrient deficiencies, with potential implications for neurodevelopment. This systematic review aims to consider current knowledge on the effects of breast milk micronutrients on

Is Supplementation with Micronutrients Still Necessary during Pregnancy? A Review.

INTRODUCTION: Proper nutrition during pregnancy is important to prevent nutritional imbalances that interfere with pregnancy. Micronutrients play critical roles in embryogenesis, fetal growth, and maternal health, as energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral needs can increase during pregnancy. Increased needs can be met by increasing the intake of dietary micronutrients. Severe micronutrient deficiency or excess during pregnancy can have negative effects on fetal growth (intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, or congenital malformations) and pregnancy development (pre-eclampsia or ges

Supplementation with micronutrients and schistosomiasis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by helminths of the genus Schistosoma with two presentations; one intestinal and another urinary; which depend on the specie of Schistosoma. One of the species that can produce intestinal schistosomiasis is Schistosoma mansoni, and the specie that produces urinary schistosomiasis is Schistosoma haematobium. Infection can be aggravated by a deficient nutritional status, which negatively impacts the immune system and increases susceptibility to infection. The main objective of this meta-analysis is to determine if a relationship exists between multim

Nutritional contributions to dementia prevention: main issues on antioxidant micronutrients.

There is an impressing body of evidence supporting the beneficial role of balanced nutrition in lowering the risk of dementia and its commonest form, Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, and despite worldwide dementia epidemic, there is much unfounded skepticism and lack of information among physicians. As a result, the diagnosis of cognitive impairment occurs still far too late, at best symptomatic drugs keep being prescribed and patients and caregivers are left with little concrete support in the hands of the natural history of the disease. This review summarizes knowledge about the impact of

Micronutrients and cardiorenal disease: insights into novel assessments and treatment.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a recognized risk multiplier for development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with CVD events representing the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD. The nature of CKD as a risk state relates both to the nature of CKD and the antecedent development of CVD. In addition, patients with CKD have increased rates of multiple conventional cardiac risk factors. The essence of the relationship appears to be bidirectional, and therapy directed at improving natural history of chronic disease on one system generally improves prognosis in the other. H
