The segregation of carbon from metals in which carbon is highly soluble, such as Ni (≈1.1 atom% at 1000 °C), is a typical method for graphene growth; this method differs from the surface-catalyzed growth of graphene that occurs on other metals such as Cu (<0.04 atom%). It has not been established whether strictly monolayer graphene could be synthesized through the traditional chemical vapor deposition route on metals where carbon is highly soluble, such as Pd (≈3.5 atom%). In this work, this issue is investigated by suppressing the grain boundary segregation using a pretreatment comprising the

Research on sustainable energy has intensified to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2. One promising strategy is the catalytic reduction of CO2 to methanol, and indium oxide (In2O3) has emerged as a highly efficient catalyst, with high turnover rates and selectivity. This work investigates methanol, the end product of CO2 reduction, and its interaction with the In2O3(111) surface. Utilizing an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment, this study combines temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), scanning

Catalyst deactivation has drawn continuing concern from both the academia and industry. Preventing deactivation and optimizing the regeneration process necessitate molecular deciphering of coke deposits. Key to achieving this goal is to identify previously less unexplored, more condensed coke species. Herein, taking commercially relevant HZSM-5 zeolite-catalyzed methanol-to-hydrocarbon as a prototypical reaction, we decode the "structural code" of the previously elusive coke molecules. This is made possible by integrating multiple techniques, especially scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and

The characterization and control of atomic substitution process is crucial in fabricating high-quality two-dimensional layered compound materials and tuning their physical properties. With intensity-voltage low energy electron microscopy (IV-LEEM), we found that the concentration of copper in the topmost copper silicide monolayer on Si (111) substrates varies gradually from 1.7 to 1.0 ML while preserving it's unique '5 × 5' incommensurate phase in a transition region as large as 1000 nm. This gradual variation of the copper concentration is due to the incomplete substitution of the Si with Cu,

Spin glasses are magnetic materials exhibiting numerous magnetization patterns, that randomly vary both in real space and in time. To date, it is still not well understood what the nature of these spatiotemporal dynamics is, namely if they are completely random or if there are relevant and correlated length and time scales. Here, we demonstrate dynamic heterogeneity in the aging dynamics of elemental neodymium. We used spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with atomistic spin dynamics simulations to image the locally ordered magnetic patterns in the self-induced spin glas

Borophene, a two-dimensional (2D) boron sheet, has recently gained considerable attention as a postgraphene material owing to its unique properties, such as intrinsic metallic character, lightest element monolayer structure, and high-frequency phonons. These features, together with its theoretically predicted high density of states, make borophene an excellent platform for investigating various quantum phenomena. However, the realization of emergent phenomena is hindered by fabrication challenges and inherently weak electronic correlations within the s and p electron system. Here, we demonstra

Quantum spin Hall insulators, with dissipationless edge channels protected by time-reversal symmetry, are promising for low-power and quantum devices. However, experimentally realized examples with sizable nontrivial gaps remain scarce. Monolayer Si2Te2 has been theoretically predicted to host a room-temperature quantum spin Hall phase, but the absence of a bulk analog has hindered its experimental realization. Here we show that HfTe2 provides an ideal van der Waals template for the epitaxial growth of strain-free monolayer Si2Te2 while preserving its nontrivial topological phase. Scanning tun

Combining surface chirality and photoresponsiveness can result in interfaces with dynamic stereochemical properties. Such materials offer unique opportunities in the context of tunable chiral recognition at interfaces. Here, we present a strategy to achieve dynamically chiral surfaces using self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) of overcrowded alkene-based molecular motors on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The chiroptical properties and the dynamic behavior of the molecular motors are maintained when confined in the SAMN, as shown using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with in situ

The two-dimensional crystallization and on-surface chemistry of chiral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons provide access to surface-confined symmetry breaking and novel covalently bonded nanostructures. Here, we investigate the self-assembly of racemic 2,3-dicarbonitrile tetrahelicene on Ag(111). Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations, we resolve the evolution of molecular organization as a function of coverage. After room-temperature deposition at submonolayer coverage, the tetrahelicene moiety spontaneously resolves into e

Pure methanol desorbs from pristine Ag(111) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at 160 K, limiting its availability in catalysis on this surface. To combat this, we devise how to adsorb methanol at room temperature without additives. The methanol adsorption near ambient pressures yields monosized trimers. We use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and single-molecule manipulation to investigate the binding pattern of these clusters and compare them to hexamers formed at low pressure below the methanol desorption temperature. Supported by density functional theory, we unravel t

The recent discovery of type-II multiferroicity in monolayer NiI 2 indicated a new pathway for intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in the two-dimensional limit. However, whether this phenomenon is a unique feature of NiI 2 or a chemically tunable property of the broader material class has remained unresolved. Here, we demonstrate that type-II multiferroicity in the nickel dihalides is tunable through halide ligand substitution by visualizing the ferroelectric order in monolayer NiBr 2 . Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we resolve atomic-scale ferroelectric domains and confirm their

Studying the self-assembly of chiral molecules in two dimensions offers insights into the fundamentals of crystallization. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we examine an uncommon aggregation of polyaromatic chiral molecules on a silver surface. Dense packing is achieved through a chiral triangular tiling of triads, with N and N ± 1 molecules at the edges. The triangles feature a random distribution of mirror-isomers, with a significant excess of one isomer. Chirality at the domain boundaries causes a lateral shift, producing three distinct topological defects where six triangles converge.

The incorporation of heterogeneous nodes can significantly enhance the catalytic and optoelectronic properties of metal-organic networks (MONs) because of the resulting uneven charge distribution and unique metal centers. On-surface synthesis (OSS) has emerged as a powerful strategy for constructing advanced MONs with heterogeneous metal-organic nodes. Herein, we report the fabrication of an MON featuring N-Ag-C heterogeneous nodes, achieved via thermally induced sequential N-OH and C-H activation on Ag(100). During annealing, dehydroxylation proceeds gradually, leading to the formation of met

Antiaromatic compounds are of great interest due to their narrow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gaps, high reactivity, and enhanced charge mobility, yet their role in single-molecule electronics is still not well understood. Using electrochemically controlled scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (ECSTM-BJ) measurements, we compared the energy-alignment-dependent conductance of the aromatic [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) and the antiaromatic [4]cyclodibenzopentalene ([4]CDBP). While [10]CPP showed a single conductance state via the

Two-dimensional topological insulators hosting the quantum spin Hall effect have application potential in dissipationless electronics. To observe the quantum spin Hall effect at elevated temperatures, a wide band gap is indispensable to efficiently suppress bulk conduction. Yet, most candidate materials exhibit narrow or even negative band gaps. Here, via elegant control of van der Waals epitaxy, we have successfully grown monolayer ZrTe5 on a bilayer graphene/SiC substrate. The epitaxial ZrTe5 monolayer crystalizes in two allotrope isomers with different intralayer alignments of ZrTe3 prisms.

The two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice has attracted intensive research interest due to the appearance of Dirac-type band structures as the consequence of two sublattices in the honeycomb structure. Introducing strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to a gap opening at the Dirac point, transforming the honeycomb lattice into a 2D topological insulator as a platform for the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE). In this work, we realize a 2D honeycomb-structured film with tellurium, the heaviest nonradioactive element in Group VI, namely, tellurene, via molecular beam epitaxy. We revealed the gap

Cross-coupling reactions represent an indispensable tool in chemical synthesis. An intriguing challenge in this field is to achieve selective cross-coupling between two precursors with similar reactivity or, to the limit, the identical molecules. Here we report an unexpected dehydrobrominative cross-coupling between 1,3,5-tris(2-bromophenyl)benzene molecules on silver surfaces. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we examine the reaction process at the single-molecular level, quantify the selectivity of the dehydrobrominative cross-coupling, and reveal the modulation of selectivity by substrat

Engineering surfaces and interfaces of materials promises great potential in the field of heterostructures and quantum matter designers, with the opportunity to drive new many-body phases that are absent in the bulk compounds. Here, we focus on the magnetic Weyl kagome system Co3Sn2S2 and show how for the terminations of different samples the Weyl points connect differently, still preserving the bulk-boundary correspondence. Scanning tunneling microscopy has suggested such a scenario indirectly, and here, we probe the Fermiology of Co3Sn2S2 directly, by linking it to its real space surface dis

Kagome lattice hosts a plethora of quantum states arising from the interplay of topology, spin-orbit coupling, and electron correlations. Here, we report symmetry-breaking electronic orders tunable by an applied magnetic field in a model Kagome magnet FeSn consisting of alternating stacks of two-dimensional Fe3Sn Kagome and Sn2 honeycomb layers. On the Fe3Sn layer terminated FeSn thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(111) substrates, we observe trimerization of the Kagome lattice using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, breaking its six-fold rotational symmetry while preserving the t

An unconventional approach for the resistless nanopatterning 2H- and 1T'-MoTe2 by means of scanning probe lithography is presented. A Fowler-Nordheim tunneling current of low energetic electrons (E = 30-60 eV) emitted from the tip of an atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilever is utilized to induce a nanoscale oxidation on a MoTe2 nanosheet surface under ambient conditions. Due to the water solubility of the generated oxide, a direct pattern transfer into the MoTe2 surface can be achieved by a simple immersion of the sample in deionized water. The tip-grown oxide is characterized using Auger e
