Microsporum canis Causes Cutaneous and Extracutaneous Feline Dermatophytic Pseudomycetomas: Molecular Identification and Clinicopathological Characteristics.

Dermatophytic pseudomycetoma (DPM) is a rarely reported invasive fungal infection of humans and animals, especially cats. This study aimed to identify dermatophytes, breed associations, and the frequency of extracutaneous (EC) involvement in feline DPM. Electronic records and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue (FFPET) from 32 suspected DPM cases in 30 cats were retrieved from a diagnostic laboratory between 2018 and 2024. To confirm DPM and molecular identity, DNA was extracted from FFPET for ITS2 sequencing, and immunohistochemistry was performed on PCR-negative cases. All cases were con

Microsporum gypseum Isolated from Ailuropoda melanoleuca Provokes Inflammation and Triggers Th17 Adaptive Immunity Response.

Microsporum gypseum causes dermatomycoses in giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). This study aimed to investigate the immune response of M. gypseum following deep infection. The degree of damage to the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys was evaluated using tissue fungal load, organ index, and histopathological methods. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) detected the mRNA expression of receptors and cytokines in the lung, and immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry, were used to assess immune cells in the lung. The results indicated that conidi

Tinea corporis by Microsporum canis in mycological laboratory staff: Unexpected results of epidemiological investigation.

Microsporum canis is a zoophilic dermatophyte, which is very contagious, especially to cats and dogs. Asymptomatic animal carriers of M. canis are regarded a critical factor in the epidemiology of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological origin of M. canis isolates using morphological traits in combination with molecular analysis. Identification of dermatophyte strains was carried out by correlating the clinical manifestation of the infection with a micro- and macroscopic examination. To confirm the species affiliation fully, molecular differentiation methods w

[Tinea unguium with Microsporum langeronii and Trichophyton soudanense revealing tinea capitis with M. langeronii].

A Senegalese lady of 17 years old presented right hand tinea unguium on all fingernails except the thumb lasting for 10 years. Mycological analysis showed with the direct examination 20% KOH mount numerous septate hyphae. Culture revealed Microsporum langeronii at a first time. The mycological analysis resumption with sampling scalp revealed a tinea capitis with M. langeronii then culture of nail pieces confirmed in a second time M. langeronii also associated with Trichophyton soudanense in the tinea unguium.

[Tinea capitis et corporis due to Microsporum canis in an immunocompromised female adults patient].

Tinea capitis as well as tinea corporis in adults may occur under conditions of immunosuppression. If suspected clinically, direct microscopy and examination by culture is indispensable. Therapeutic intervention should start without delay. A proven fungal infection of scalp hairs warrants immediate initiation of systemic treatment. Hereby prevention of disfiguring hair loss, permanent formation of scar tissue, spread of fungal organisms to other cutaneous regions as well as infection of other persons is possible.

Strains differentiation of Microsporum canis by RAPD analysis using (GACA)4 and (ACA)5 primers.

Molecular analysis of dermatophytes (based on PCR fingerprinting) revealed high clonal differentiation between the genus and species. Microsporum canis (zoophilic dermatophyte, belonging to genus Microsporum), responsible for most cases of tinea capitis in children, tinea corporis in adults and dermatophytoses in cats, is very unique in comparison with other dermatophytes. Results of most molecular studies show that there is no clonal differentiation within M. canis as distinct from other species. The aim of this study was application of (GACA)4 repetitive primer and (ACA)5 primer for typing o

Beyond the surface: an uncommon case of Microsporum gypseum subcutaneous mycosis induced by an insect bite.

Deep cutaneous and subcutaneous infections caused by dermatophytes are exceptionally uncommon, typically occurring through traumatic inoculation. This clinical report details the complex dermatological journey of a young, immunocompetent 24-year-old girl who reported a rare case of a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Microsporum gypseum. The patient presented with an annular erythematous plaque with centered papules on her left hand, which she referred to as stemming from an insect bite. Initial evaluation at another hospital included a biopsy, which resulted in a preliminary diagnosis of pyoderm

[Microsporum canis infection from a cat : A source of tinea capitis and dermatophytosis in an entire family].

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection of the scalp predominantly affecting children. It is often misdiagnosed due to its clinical resemblance to other dermatological conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. This case report presents a 4-year-old boy who was initially misdiagnosed and treated for psoriasis but later correctly diagnosed with tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis. The diagnosis was confirmed through microbiological culture and histopathological examination after local corticosteroid treatments failed to show improvement. Subsequently, it was discovered tha

Ganoderma Microsporum immunomodulatory protein suppresses osteosarcoma growth through redox imbalance and ER stress-driven apoptosis.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is an aggressive bone malignancy with limited therapeutic advances and persistent chemoresistance, highlighting the need for safer and more effective treatments. Ganoderma microsporum immunomodulatory protein (GMI) is a fungal-derived bioactive molecule with reported antitumor activity, yet its effects in OS remain unknown. Here, we investigated the anticancer potential and mechanisms of GMI in osteosarcoma. GMI selectively reduced the viability of HOS and U2OS cells while exhibiting low toxicity toward normal osteoblasts. GMI induced morphological alterations, chromatin cond

Microsporum canis complex infections in the United Arab Emirates: Clinical, molecular, and antifungal susceptibility profiles.

Microsporum canis complex infections remain a major cause of pediatric dermatophytosis, yet molecular epidemiologic and antifungal susceptibility data from the Arabian Gulf are scarce, with no contemporary regional assessment since 1981-1988. We characterized the clinical, molecular, and antifungal susceptibility profiles of M. canis complex isolates in Abu Dhabi and assessed concordance between phenotypic and ITS-based identification. Fifty-two clinical dermatophyte isolates collected through passive surveillance at the UAEU Fungal Reference Laboratory (September 2024-December 2025) underwent

Identification of Familial Infections Using Multilocus Microsatellite Typing in Tinea Corporis due to Microsporum canis.

Microsporum canis is a type of dermatophyte that causes zoonotic dermatophytosis in cats and dogs. We report three cases of tinea corporis due to M. canis from a single household with a domestic cat as a pet. The cases included a woman in her thirties (mother), a girl in her teens (older sister), and a girl in her teens (younger sister). Following sudden hair loss in the domestic cat, annular erythema with pruritus and scales appeared on the face, neck, and limbs of the older sister, younger sister, and mother, sequentially; they subsequently visited our hospital. Microsporum gypseum Infection Among Two Related Families With a Zoonotic Aspect: A Prospective Case Series.

Background and purpose The Microsporum gypseum complex is a globally distributed group of geophilic dermatophytes that primarily affect animals but can also rarely cause dermatomycoses in humans. With some regional and occupational variations, tinea corporis is the most prevalent presentation of the infection. The aim of this study was to report on the diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis cases among related families, and their pets, from southern Saudi Arabia. Up-to-date information on dermatophytes and dermatophytosis is needed. Methods This is a prospective case series undertaken at t

Microsporum aenigmaticum sp. nov. from M. gypseum complex, isolated as a cause of tinea corporis.

An undescribed Microsporum species was isolated from skin scales recovered from a 40-mm large, annular, scaling lesion on the wrist of a 46-year-old woman. The risk factors for dermatophyte infection in the patient were frequent work in the garden, hunting, and contact with dogs and horses. Direct microscopic examination of the scales revealed the presence of dermatophyte hyphae; when the samples were cultured, a morphologically similar fungus grew on all slants in pure culture. Both of these findings strongly suggested that the isolate was the true causal agent of infection. The possible geop

Prevalence of dermatophytosis in cats and dogs in türkiye: dominance of Microsporum canis and first detection of Trichophyton rubrum.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is a fungal infection that can be zoonotic, with transmission occurring in both directions between humans and companion animals, particularly in settings involving close contact. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify the causative agents of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats using conventional and molecular diagnostic methods. A total of 150 animals with dermatological lesions were sampled, including 105 cats and 45 dogs from both household and shelter environments. This cross-sectional study employed direct microscopy and fungal culture as the ini

Microsporum canis pseudomycetoma and disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection in an HIV/AIDS patient, an unusual combination.

Pseudomycetomas are rare fungal subcutaneous infections caused by dermatophytes, which are mainly observed in immunocompromised patients. Mycobacterium genavense is considered an opportunistic pathogen in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), clinically resembling the presentation of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). Here, we describe the case of a 26-year-old PLWHA with a 3-month history of a 4cm tumoral, duroelastic and painful lesion located on the back. Histopathology of the tumoral lesion revealed chronic granulomatous inflammation with grains composed of PAS-positive and Grocott-positive

A Mother and Daughter with Tinea Corporis Caused by Microsporum canis Apparently Transmitted from a Domestic Cat.

The patient was a girl (case 1) and her mother (case 2). The family had purchased a domestic cat five months previously. Three months later, both patients developed eruptions. Mycological examinations were positive in both cases, and the cat tested positive on the hairbrush test. The macroconidia were thick only in the cat strain, and drug susceptibility testing showed mildly low levels of terbinafine and itraconazole. However, a molecular biological analysis of these three strains showed 100% identity with reference strains of Microsporum canis. Since there have been recent reports of drug-re

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) for the serodiagnosis of canine dermatophytosis caused by Microsporum canis.

Abstract In dogs, dermatophytosis should be considered in any case of alopecic, papular or pustular lesion. The aim of this study was to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) as an aid in the diagnosis of canine dermatophytosis. The antigen used was a whole fungal extract obtained from an isolate of Microsporum canis cultured on a liquid medium from the parasitized hair of a cat with patches of alopecia. To assess the ELISA performances, sera from 18 dogs with dermatophytosis caused by M. canis (group A, n = 18), 20 dogs with skin diseases other than dermatophytosis and 22 healt
