The effects of ionizing radiation, microwaves, and ultrasound on the developing embryo: clinical interpretations and applications of the data.

The term "radiation" evokes emotional responses both from lay individuals and from professionals. Many spokespersons are unfamiliar with radiation biology or the quantitative nature of the risks. Frequently, microwave, ultrasound, and ionizing radiation risks are confused. Although it is impossible to prove no risk for any environmental hazard, it appears that exposure to microwave radiation below the maximal permissible levels present no measurable risk to the embryo. Ultrasound exposure from diagnostic ultrasonographic imaging equipment also is quite innocuous. It is true that continued surv

Microwave-induced thermoacoustic microscopy based on short-pulse microwave and high-frequency point-focused ultrasonic transducer.

BACKGROUND: As an emerging hybrid imaging modality, microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging (MITAI) provides high contrast and deep tissue penetration, and has been extensively applied in cancer diagnosis, arthritis detection, and brain research. However, the previous studies had a limited spatial resolution of about 0.45-1.5 mm. PURPOSE: Here, we describe a microwave-induced thermoacoustic microscopy (MITAM) system to help overcome the resolution limitation of current MITAI to image more subtle tissue features. On this basis, this paper applies MITAM to the thin skin and to demonstrate the

[Effects of radio- and microwaves emitted by wireless communication devices on the functions of the nervous system selected elements].

Nervous system is the most "electric" system in the human body. The research of the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of different frequencies on its functioning have been carried out for years. This paper presents the results of the scientific literature review on the EMF influence on the functioning of the human nervous system with a particular emphasis on the recent studies of the modern wireless communication and data transmission systems. In the majority of the analyzed areas the published research results do not show EMF effects on the nervous system, except for the influence of G

Improved and optimized one-pot method for N-succinimidyl-4-[(18)F]fluorobenzoate ([(18)F]SFB) synthesis using microwaves.

N-Succinimidyl-4-[(18)F]fluorobenzoate ([(18)F]SFB) is a potential prosthetic agent for novel tracer development in positron emission tomography (PET). Previously, we reported a microwave-assisted one-pot synthesis of [(18)F]SFB with high efficacy. Herein, we reveal an improved and optimized approach based on this former model for producing [(18)F]SFB. With optimized approaches, the entire protocol can be completed within 25min, and [(18)F]SFB is generated in satisfactory quality for direct use without further purification via high-performance liquid chromatography.

Perturbation of nuclear spin polarizations in solid state NMR of nitroxide-doped samples by magic-angle spinning without microwaves.

We report solid state (13)C and (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments with magic-angle spinning (MAS) on frozen solutions containing nitroxide-based paramagnetic dopants that indicate significant perturbations of nuclear spin polarizations without microwave irradiation. At temperatures near 25 K, (1)H and cross-polarized (13)C NMR signals from (15)N,(13)C-labeled L-alanine in trinitroxide-doped glycerol/water are reduced by factors as large as six compared to signals from samples without nitroxide doping. Without MAS or at temperatures near 100 K, differences between signals with a

Influence of microwaves on different types of receptors and the role of peroxidation of lipids on receptor-protein shedding.

The effects of a continuous wave or pulse-modulated, 900 MHz microwave field were studied by in vitro assays of rat chemoreceptors. The pulsed field was modulated as rectangular waves at rates of 1, 6, 16, 32, 75, or 100 pps. The pulse-period to pulse-duration ratio was 5 in all cases, and specific absorption rates (SARs) ranged from 0.5 to 18 W/kg. Binding of ligands to cell membranes was differentially affected by exposure to microwaves. For example, binding of H3-glutamic acid to hippocampal cells was not altered by a 15 min exposure to a continuous wave field at 1 W/kg, but binding of H3-d

Ultra-Rapid Crystallization of L-alanine Using Monomode Microwaves, Indium Tin Oxide and Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Evaporative Crystallization.

The use of indium tin oxide (ITO) and focused monomode microwave heating for the ultra-rapid crystallization of L-alanine (a model amino acid) is reported. Commercially available ITO dots (< 5 mm) attached to blank poly(methyl)methacrylate (PMMA, 5 cm in diameter with 21-well silicon isolators: referred to as the iCrystal plates) were found to withstand prolonged microwave heating during crystallization experiments. Crystallization of L-alanine was performed at room temperature (a control experiment), with the use of two microwave sources: a 2.45 GHz conventional microwave (900 W, power level

Effects of gamma rays, ultraviolet radiation, sunlight, microwaves and electromagnetic fields on gene expression mediated by human immunodeficiency virus promoter.

Previous work by our group and others has shown the modulation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) promoter or long terminal repeat (LTR) after exposure to neutrons and ultraviolet radiations. Using HeLa cells stably transfected with a construct containing the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) gene, the transcription of which is mediated by the HIV-LTR, we designed experiments to examine the effects of exposure to different types of radiation (such as gamma rays, ultraviolet and sunlight irradiations, electromagnetic fields and microwaves) on HIV-LTR-driven expression of CAT. [Action of microwaves with different modulation frequencies and exposure times on GABA receptor concentration in the cerebral cortex of rats].

The effect of 800 mHz microwaves of 0, 3, 5, 7, 16, and 30 Hz modulation on GABA receptor concentration in rat brain cortex has been investigated. Irradiation of the whole body at a modulation frequency of 16 Hz readily decreases the GABA receptor concentration. Irradiation at other modulation frequencies is ineffective. Irradiation of the whole body modulated at 16 Hz with various exposure times (5, 15 and 60 min) has revealed the highest effect at 5 min, while at a longer exposure the effect decreases.

Ultrasound-Guided Microwave Ablation of Thyroid Schwannoma.

Thyroid schwannoma, a rare neoplasm of the thyroid gland, originates from Schwann cells that form the myelin sheath. A 47-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging thyroid nodule, which was monitored by repeated ultrasonography over the previous 2 years. Following a diagnosis of thyroid schwannoma by core needle biopsy and immunohistochemical staining, the patient underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA). Subsequent thyroid ultrasounds indicated a gradual decrease in the tumor's volume, achieving a 12-month volume reduction ratio of 79.20%. No complications were obser

CT-guided microwave ablation of the nonsurgical aspergilloma.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillosis is a fungal infection that can lead to development of an aspergilloma, especially in patients with a history of cavitary lung disease. It is generally managed with antifungal therapy followed by surgical intervention. There are, however, limited options for the nonsurgical patient. Microwave ablation is already an effective, minimally invasive treatment being used in some lung malignancies and may be an alternative and definitive treatment in the inoperable patient. METHODS: Two patients were considered for microwave ablation following their diagnoses of aspergillosi

Microwave Radiometry for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Inflammatory Arthritis.

The ability of microwave radiometry (MWR) to detect with high accuracy in-depth temperature changes in human tissues is under investigation in various medical fields. The need for non-invasive, easily accessible imaging biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory arthritis provides the background for this application in order to detect the local temperature increase due to the inflammatory process by placing the appropriate MWR sensor on the skin over the joint. Indeed, a number of studies reviewed herein have reported interesting results, suggesting that MWR is useful for the
