Prevalence of migraine among adults with mood disorders: a Saudi cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is characterized by recurrent headaches and frequently coexists with depressive and bipolar disorders, exacerbating disability and complicating management. Data on this association in Saudi Arabia remain limited, however. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate how mood disorders and migraine occur together in the Saudi context and understand the extent of disability that migraine may cause in patients with mood disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving adult patients with mood disorders at a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Partici

Causal influences of migraine on neuropsychiatric disorders: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Our study aims to explore the causal relationship between migraine (with and without aura) and 6 disorders: anxiety, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, major depressive disorder, insomnia, and stroke, using a 2-sample Mendelian randomization. Migraine without aura had a significant causal association with bipolar disorder (odds ratios = 1.075, 95% confidence intervals = [1.005-1.151], P = .037). A complex relationship was found with major depressive disorder (odds ratios = 1.036, 95% confidence intervals = [1.009-1.064], P = .010 for overall migraine). But after correction for Benjamini-Hochberg mult

Genetic migraine disorders and the response to calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonist treatment.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a potent cerebral vasodilator and part of the trigeminal migraine cascade. Newer migraine therapies target CGRP signaling for both acute and preventative management of headache. In this series, we present two cases of genetic conditions, of which migraine is a key feature, responsive to CGRP antagonist therapy. A 31-year-old female with mitochondrial encephalopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes and a phenotype of chronic migraine with visual aura, and a 62-year-old female with cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical in

Migraine and risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy through common pathophysiological features. This study evaluates the association between migraine diagnosis and treatment, and risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD, a large longitudinal database of patient records in the UK. We analyzed data from liveborn or stillborn singleton deliveries from 1993-2020 with at least 24 months of medical history and no history of cardiovascular disease (n = 1,049,839). We ascertain

Migraine and gastrointestinal disorders in middle and old age: A UK Biobank study.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine is a prevalent condition causing a substantial level of disability worldwide. Despite this, the pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Migraine often co-occurs with gastrointestinal disorders, but the direction of a potential causal link is unclear. The aim of this project was to investigate the associations between migraine and several gastrointestinal disorders in the same cohort in order to determine the relative strengths of these associations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined whether migraine is associated with irritable bowel syndrome

What is the link between migraine and psychiatric disorders? From epidemiology to therapeutics.

The association between migraine and psychiatric disorders is well documented through numerous population-based studies. The results of these studies are coherent and show an increased risk of suffering from depression, bipolar disorders, numerous anxiety disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder. This raises the question of stress as a precipitating factor for migraine illness. Psychiatric comorbidity is even more frequent in chronic migraine than in episodic migraine patients. Many prospective studies have shown that psychiatric comorbidity could be considered as a risk factor for

A link between gastrointestinal disorders and migraine: Insights into the gut-brain connection.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a complex, multifaceted, and disabling headache disease that is often complicated by gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, such as gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia, and cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS). Functional dyspepsia and CVS are part of a spectrum of disorders newly classified as disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia are both associated with delayed gastric emptying, while nausea and vomiting are prominent in CVS, which are also symptoms that commonly occur with migraine attacks. Furthermore, these gastric disorders are co

Exploring the Dynamic Relationship Between Migraine and Functional Neurological Disorders: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Headache and functional neurologic disorders (FND) are the most diagnosed neurologic disorders, yet their relationship has not been comprehensively detailed. RECENT FINDINGS : Understandings of migraine and FND have each progressed tremendously. Headache may be the most common neurologic comorbidity in FND. Migraine may be identified as a predisposing factor and predate FND up to ten years. Schemas have been proposed to explain potential relationship and shared pathophysiologic mechanisms; the disorders share multiple comorbidities. Headache may contribute to disability in F

ERP evidence of heightened attentional response to visual stimuli in migraine headache disorders.

New findings from migraine studies have indicated that this common headache disorder is associated with anomalies in attentional processing. In tandem with the previous explorations, this study will provide evidence to show that visual attention is impacted by migraine headache disorders. 43 individuals were initially recruited in the migraine group and 33 people with non-migraine headache disorders were in the control group. The event-related potentials (ERP) of the participants were calculated using data from a visual oddball paradigm task. By analyzing the N200 and P300 ERP components, migr

Contribution of intravestibular sensory conflict to motion sickness and dizziness in migraine disorders.

Migraine is associated with enhanced motion sickness susceptibility and can cause episodic vertigo [vestibular migraine (VM)], but the mechanisms relating migraine to these vestibular symptoms remain uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that the central integration of rotational cues (from the semicircular canals) and gravitational cues (from the otolith organs) is abnormal in migraine patients. A postrotational tilt paradigm generated a conflict between canal cues (which indicate the head is rotating) and otolith cues (which indicate the head is tilted and stationary), and eye movements were m

Familial PRRT2 mutation with heterogeneous paroxysmal disorders including paroxysmal torticollis and hemiplegic migraine.

PRRT2 is the gene recently associated with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD), benign familial infantile epilepsy, and choreoathetosis infantile convulsions. We report four family members with PRRT2 mutations who had heterogeneous paroxysmal disorders. The index patient had transient infantile paroxysmal torticollis, then benign infantile epilepsy that responded to carbamazepine. The index patient's father had PKD and migraine with aphasia, and his two brothers had hemiplegic migraine with onset in childhood. All four family members had the same PRRT2 c.649dupC mutation. We conclude that

Disrupting the clock: meta-analysis of irregular night shifts and migraine, proposing shift work migraine disorder with chronobiology strategies.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is linked to circadian rhythm disruptions, with morning attack peaks, circadian variations in trigeminal pain sensitivity, anterior hypothalamus involvement, and core circadian clock gene activity. Irregular night shift work, affecting up to 50% of the population, including new parents and students, causes significant circadian disruption. We hypothesize that irregular night shifts increase migraine prevalence compared to fixed schedules. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies up to March 27, 2025, assessed migraine prevalence in irregular

Gender inequities in the economic burden of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, migraine, and rheumatoid arthritis in Mexico, 2005-2021.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, migraine, and rheumatoid arthritis are common chronic conditions that contribute substantially to disability, recurrent care needs, and productivity losses, yet remain comparatively under-prioritised in health policy. In Mexico, these conditions disproportionately affect women, but their economic burden has not been comprehensively quantified from a gender perspective. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the direct and indirect economic burden of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, migraine, and rheumatoid arthritis in Mexico among adults aged 20 y
