The military population face a unique set of risk factors that may increase the risk of being diagnosed with dementia. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have a higher prevalence in this group in comparison to the civilian population. By delving into the individual relationships between TBI and dementia, and PTSD and dementia, we are able to better explore dementia in the military and veteran populations. While there are some inconsistencies in results, the TBI-dementia association has become more widely accepted. Moderate-to-severe TBI has been found to inc

INTRODUCTION: Since its detection in the early 1980s, HIV and AIDS have claimed 32.7 million lives. The HIV epidemic continues to plague the world with its most devastating effects felt in Eastern and Southern Africa. The exposure, vulnerability, and impact of HIV have been prominent among military personnel due to environmental, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics. Policies have been developed to mitigate its exposure, vulnerability, and impact on the military. However, there are disparities across these policies, especially on recruitment, enlistment, and deployment. These content

The purpose of this study was to examine subjective cognitive and psychiatric functioning in post-deployed military Veterans who underwent the Veterans Health Administration's Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Screening and Evaluation Program and enrolled in the VA's Million Veteran Program (MVP). Veterans (N = 7483) were classified into three groups based on outcomes from the TBI Screening and Evaluation Program: (1) negative TBI screen ('Screen-'), (2) positive TBI screen but no TBI diagnosis ('Screen+/TBI-'), or (3) positive TBI screen and TBI diagnosis ('Screen+/TBI+'). Chi-square analyses reve

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a worldwide pandemic that at the time of this writing has caused over 400,000 deaths within the United States. During the pandemic surge in New York City, NY, a number of military Medical Corps (MC) and Nurse Corps (NC) providers were mobilized in direct support of critical care capabilities through expansion intensive care units. In the course of the deployment, high rates of neurological-related manifestations associated with COVID-19 infection were directly observed by our military provider teams which will be described and supporting literatu

BACKGROUND: Past mental disorders predict future disorders, both in the presence and absence of trauma exposure. However, it is not clear whether those with past mental disorders are disproportionately vulnerable to the negative effects of a given level of trauma.
METHODS: The data source was the 2013 Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey (CFMHS), of which 1820 respondents had deployed only once in their military careers-all in support of the mission in Afghanistan. The primary outcomes were past 12-month depression and past 12-month PTSD. Multivariate logistic regression was performed for eac

Peacekeeping operations in sub-Saharan Africa continue to be impacted by malaria both in-country and among returning service members. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) deploys an engineering company to Juba and Rumbek, South Sudan to conduct peacekeeping operations as part of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Each deployment is approximately 12 months long. The unit is given doxycycline one week before travel before switching to the UN-provided mefloquine during deployment and for four weeks after returning. The RTA routinely conducts post-deployment screening for malaria by microscopy and PCR f

Weil's disease should be considered even in non-endemic regions when compatible clinical findings are accompanied by relevant exposure history. This case is epidemiologically notable as the first documented report from South Khorasan Province, highlighting the diagnostic challenges of leptospirosis in non-endemic settings and the potential risk of disease transmission associated with military deployment from endemic to non-endemic regions.

PURPOSE: The pregnancy and postpartum periods represent a time of heightened psychological vulnerability with implications for the offspring. Knowledge of the mental health of perinatal women exposed to armed conflict when their partner is in military deployment is scarce.
METHODS: This matched-control, survey-based study included a sample of 429 women recruited during the first months of the Israel-Hamas War who were pregnant or within six months postpartum. Women who had a partner in military deployment were matched primarily on demographics, prior mental health, and trauma exposure to wome

Since 2001, 1,347,731 active component U.S. military members deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. This report documents the percentages of deployers who were diagnosed with selected mental disorders in relation to the number (first through fifth) and lengths of "dwell times" prior to such deployments. In general, larger percentages of deployers were diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety-related disorders after second/third than first deployments. After first and repeat deployments, relatively more medical than other occupational group members were diagnosed with PTSD. In genera

INTRODUCTION: The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan provided military surgeons from the USA and the UK with extensive experience into the management of injuries to the head, face and neck (HFN) from high energy bullets and explosive weaponry. The challenge is now to maintain the expertise in managing such injuries for future military deployments.
METHODS: The manner in which each country approaches four parameters required for a surgeon to competently treat HFN wounds in deployed military environments was compared. These comprised initial surgical training (residency/registrar training), surg

This study retrospectively reviewed records from current members of the U.S. military who had completed the PTSD Checklist (PCL) at 0 and 3-months after returning from deployments. Insomnia was the most commonly reported symptom of PTSD on the PCL and had the highest average severity scores. At initial screen, 41% of those who had been to Iraq or Afghanistan reported sleep problems. Those who had initially reported any insomnia had significantly higher overall scores for PTSD severity at follow-up than did service members without such a complaint. These results show that insomnia is a particul

OBJECTIVE: To examine incidence of mental health diagnoses during initial service of U.S. active duty military members and identify associations with deployment, attrition, and suicide.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 576,502 service members (SMs) newly enlisted between 2003 and 2006 was identified. Data included medical encounter, deployment and attrition, and suicide. Multivariable logistic regression models examine the association between mental health diagnoses coded within the SMs' first 6 months of eligibility for health care benefits and deployment. BACKGROUND: US military suicides have increased substantially over the past decade and currently account for almost 20% of all military deaths. We investigated the associations of a comprehensive set of time-varying risk factors with suicides among current and former military service members.
METHODS: We did a retrospective multivariate analysis of all US military personnel between 2001 and 2011 (n=110 035 573 person-quarter-years, representing 3 795 823 service members). Outcome was death by suicide, either during service or post-separation. We used Cox proportional hazard models at the pers

INTRODUCTION: The associations between stressful military experiences and tobacco use and alcohol misuse among Service members are well documented. However, little is known about whether stressful military experiences are associated with tobacco use and alcohol misuse among military spouses.
METHODS: Using 9872 Service member-spouse dyads enrolled in the Millennium Cohort Family Study, we employed logistic regression to estimate the odds of self-reported cigarette smoking, risky drinking, and problem drinking among spouses by Service member deployment status, communication regarding deploymen

Background: In peacekeeping operations, soldiers are often exposed to the same traumatic factors as in conventional war and may also be subject to physical risks and psychological stressors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to the Conservation of Resources Theory (COR), PTSD stems from resource depletion and inadequate restoration. Objectives: To discuss and meta-analyse PTSD-related factors among peacekeepers, based on the COR theory, framing them as resources or loss/threat of loss of resources. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed with relevant

BACKGROUND: Military deployment to combat zones puts military personnel to a number of physical and mental challenges that may adversely affect mental health. Until now, few studies have been performed in Europe on mental health utilization after military deployment.
OBJECTIVE: We compared the incidence of mental health consultations with the Military Mental Health Service (MMHS) of military deployed to Afghanistan to that of non-deployed military personnel.
METHOD: We assessed utilization of the MMHS by the full cohort of the Netherlands Armed Forces enlisted between 2008 and 2010 through l

INTRODUCTION: There is very good international research on deployment-related mental disorders in military personnel. The incidence rates show a very wide range. A new strategy is therefore proposed in order to achieve better standardization and thus better comparability of the studies. In addition to a non-deployed comparison group, we propose to compare deployed soldiers with and without critical military incidents during the deployment. This additional distinction makes it possible to differentiate between the influencing variables of actual threat and general deployment stress.

This article discusses the use of role-exit theory within military couples as they attend counseling for martial discord. The adjustment of roles by both members of the marriage during a military deployment can create tension on the soldier's return. The goal of counseling is to assist the couples in regaining a balance in their marriage through cohesion and generating comfort in the roles assumed during deployment and on the soldier's return.A need for flexibility and understanding is important for a successful marriage. This need increases in a military couple. Frequent changes due to milita
