Management of chronic musculoskeletal pain in veterans: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Veterans are military with health problems due to military conditions. The improved body armor and operational conditions has reduced the number of deaths, but increased the number of veterans with severe injuries, affected by musculoskeletal pain and associated syndromes, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Multimodal approaches are considered in USA the gold standard for the treatment of these problems, while in Europe and Italy the data are unknown. The aim of this review was to describe and summarize multimodal therapeutic approaches that apply to the ve

Deployment experiences of Army nurse practitioners.

Army Nurse Practitioners (NPs) provide immediate and lifesaving care during combat operations. The most recent conflicts of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom have seen an increasing number of NP deployments. The uniqueness of these conflicts has also seen NPs being used in nontraditional roles. This study surveyed 50 Army NPs with deployment experience to explore and elucidate their clinical practices in a combat environment. Over 70% reported seeing greater than 11 patients a day with the top three diagnoses of musculoskeletal/soft tissue (noncombat), spinal pain (mechani

Broken nurses: an interrogation of the impact of the Great War (1914-1918) on the health of New Zealand nurses who served - a cohort comparison study.

INTRODUCTION: New Zealand's initial contribution of 50 nurses to WWI was thought to be sufficient. However, by the time of Armistice Day, at least 550 nurses had served for the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. According to diaries and records, many arrived back broken with a wide disparity in care. No formal analysis of this exists to understand the impact in more detail. The hypothesis is that the nurses who served the longest would carry a higher sickness burden and have a shorter life span than those nurses who had a shorter length of service. METHODS: Service files of the first 50 nurses

Visiting Holocaust-Related Sites with Medical Students as an Aid in Teaching Medical Ethics.

During the Nazi period numerous doctors and nurses played a nefarious role. In Germany they were responsible for the sterilization and killing of disabled persons. Furthermore, the Nazi doctors used concentration camp inmates as guinea pigs in medical experiments for military or racial purposes. A study of the collaboration of doctors with National Socialism exemplifies behavior that must be avoided. Combining medical teaching with lessons from the Holocaust could be a way to transmit Medical Ethics to doctors, nurses and students. The authors describe a study tour with medical students to Pol

Nursing Cooperation Pattern for Patients With Advanced Pancreatic Cancer and Abdominal Pain Undergoing Endoscopic Ultrasound-guided Celiac Plexus Neurolysis.

CONTEXT: Patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) at a late stage often suffer from severe abdominal pain due to the invasion of celiac plexus, and the analgesics they receive often have intolerable side effects. Endoscopic, ultrasound-guided, celiac plexus neurolysis (EUS-guided CPN) can have a good therapeutic effect. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to evaluate the ability of two nursing cooperation patterns to reduce patients' pain, decrease operation times, increase operational efficiency, and increase nurses' satisfaction, for patients with advanced PC and abdominal pain who received EUS-guide

On the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové.

Last autumn we commemorated the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové. A number of events were held and several publications were released, including a special issue of the Časopis lékařů českých entirely dedicated to this anniversary and to the faculty. At the ceremonial assembly of the academic community on 8 October 2025, the dean of the faculty, Professor Manďák, delivered an extensive speech in which he clearly described the historical circumstances of the faculty's foundation, its beginnings, development, and growth through va

Evaluation of infection control practices during an AE.

The broadening global commitment of UK military personnel since the end of the Cold War has brought them into contact with a plethora of tropical diseases, some of which require isolation and air transfer to a UK medical facility. This presents a number of challenges to the safe repatriation of patients and attending medical and flight crews. During a recent repatriation of a patient with suspected Lassa fever from West Africa, the team's practices were evaluated and recommendations were made for improvements to future transfers by the deployable air isolator team. Valuable lessons were learne

The Effect of Regional Factors on the Mental Health Status of Frontline Nurses and Patients With COVID-19 During COVID-19: The Role of Depression and Anxiety.

At the end of 2019, Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, experienced the ravages of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In a few months, infected people rose to tens of thousands. This study aimed to explore the mental health status of military nurse personnel assisting (non-Hubei area) in the fight against COVID-19 and local nurse personnel (in the Wuhan area), as well as the differences in mental health status between nurses and COVID-19 patients that provide a reference basis for psychological crisis intervention. A convenience sampling method was used to select frontline nurses and COVID-19 pati

This study evaluated ICU nurses' knowledge and practices related to delirium and identified associated factors in Jordan. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 328 ICU nurses from six governmental, military, and private hospitals. Data were collected using the Delirium Awareness and Practice ICU questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, with independent t-te

From battlefield to community: Simulation-based education for walking blood bank whole blood transfusion.

BACKGROUND: Field transfusion of whole blood is vital for patients in hemorrhagic shock, particularly in austere or resource-limited environments. Military use of warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) has inspired civilian interest in walking blood banks (WBBs) for rural, prehospital, and mass casualty settings where blood product access is limited. However, standardized training and proficiency benchmarks are lacking. This project developed a checklist and established validity evidence to assess provider proficiency in WFWB collection and transfusion. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary pa

Onychomycosis in close quarter living review of the literature.

Onychomycosis is defined as a fungal infection of the nail bed and/or nail plate. The prevalence of onychomycosis has increased dramatically as a worldwide condition in the twentieth century due to occlusive footwear, global wars and natural migration. Risk factors generally leading to onychomycosis development include bodily spread of dermatophyte and non-dermatophyte tinea pedis, peripheral vascular disease, damaged nails via sports and trauma, older age, genetics, immunodeficiency and diabetes. Many publications discuss prevalence, symptoms and treatment of the disease in individual cases,

Far Forward Anesthesia and Massive Blood Transfusion: Two Cases Revealing the Challenge of Damage Control Resuscitation in an Austere Environment.

Since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the US military has treated more than 51,000 casualties and sustained more than 6,600 deaths. The past decade of conflict has solidified major advances in the use of blood component therapy and the liberal use of fresh whole blood during damage control resuscitation. This resuscitation strategy, combined with far forward damage control surgery, rapid aeromedical evacuation, and major improvements in critical care air transportation and personal protective equipment has led to a 90% to 92% survival rate in US casualt
