Comparative genomics and expression analysis of the CIPK gene family in rice (Oryza sativa) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica).

The CIPK (CBL-interacting protein kinase) gene family serves as a crucial component of calcium-mediated signaling pathways in plants, playing vital roles in abiotic stress responses and developmental regulation. Despite their functional importance, systematic comparative analyses of CIPK gene families between cereal species with distinct physiological adaptations remain limited. To address this knowledge gap, we present a comprehensive comparative genomic analysis of CIPK gene families in two ecologically and physiologically divergent cereal crops - rice (Oryza sativa, a C3 species adapted to

Integrated Physicochemical, Structural, and In Silico Analyses Revealed the Enhanced Functional Potential of Processed Proso Millet (Panicum miliaceum).

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) contains antinutritional factors such as phytates, tannins, and enzyme inhibitors that limit nutrient bioavailability; however, appropriate processing techniques effectively reduce these constraints. This study evaluates the effects of milling, soaking, parboiling, and popping on the physicochemical, functional, and structural properties of proso millet, along with in silico analysis of its bioactive compounds. Processing significantly influenced functional properties, with water absorption capacity observed to be highest in parboiling (41.31% ± 0.03%), followe

Investigations of Cr(VI) removal by millet bran biochar modified with inorganic compounds: Momentous role of additional lactate.

In this study, millet bran biochars modified with inorganic compounds (H3PO4: P-BC, NaOH: Na-BC and K2CO3: K-BC) were prepared and applied for Cr(VI) removal to evaluate the effects of modification on biochars' physicochemical properties. The results showed that Cr(VI) reduction capacity complied with the order of Na-BC > BC > P-BC > K-BC, and reductive groups such as -OH and -NH2 played considerable roles in electrons donating. Based on this, lactate was added for further investigation of electrons transferring. The results displayed that Cr(VI) removal of all biochars was enhanced tremendous

Adaptation of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) to Abiotic Stresses: A Special Perspective of Responses to Nitrogen and Phosphate Limitations.

Amongst various environmental constraints, abiotic stresses are increasing the risk of food insecurity worldwide by limiting crop production and disturbing the geographical distribution of food crops. Millets are known to possess unique features of resilience to adverse environments, especially infertile soil conditions, although the underlying mechanisms are yet to be determined. The small diploid genome, short stature, excellent seed production, C4 photosynthesis, and short life cycle of foxtail millet make it a very promising model crop for studying nutrient stress responses. Known to be a

Modulating protein-polysaccharide gel networks via almond protein to improve physicochemical stability of millet-based set yogurt.

Low soluble protein content and poor gelation in millet milk compromise the formation of firm set yogurts. This study developed a millet-based set yogurt with improved physicochemical stability by incorporating almond protein isolate (API; 0-2%, w/v), which contributes a mild flavor, acid stability, and gel-forming capacity. API supplementation promoted acid-induced gelation via ionic interactions within the protein-polysaccharide matrix. Formulations with 0.5-1% API formed self-supporting gels with higher firmness (1.46-7.31 N), higher water-holding capacity (97.92-99.00%), greater post-shear

Effects of Regulated Deficit Irrigation at Key Growth Stages on Yield and Water Use Efficiency of Foxtail Millet in the Loess Plateau.

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is an important water-saving strategy in arid regions. To quantify the effects of RDI on foxtail millet yield and water use efficiency and determine an optimal RDI strategy, a three-year field trial was carried out over dry, normal, and wet rainfall years in the Loess Plateau. Full irrigation throughout the whole growth period served as the control, whereas mild, moderate, and severe deficit irrigation treatments were conducted at the jointing-booting stage, heading-flowering stage, and across the whole growing period, respectively. The results indicate that

Inhibitory effects and amino acid metabolism regulations of active polyphenol from foxtail millet bran on chronic colitis in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is frequently associated with metabolic imbalances. Polyphenols have demonstrated efficacy in alleviating colitis by restoring the metabolic disorders. Our previous studies revealed that bound polyphenols extracted from millet bran could alleviate acute colitis and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CRC) via restoring the gut microbiome and that the low molecular weight (MW) (<200 Da) portion of bound polyphenol (BPLP) constituted the primary active component, comprising six phenolic acids. METHODS: To further evaluate the effects of BPLP on i

Comparative performance of pearl millet- and sorghum- based diets vs. wheat- and rice-based diets for trace metal bioavailability.

Pearl millet and sorghum offer a cheap source of energy compared to wheat and rice and are widely consumed by rural communities in many parts of the world. Due to the low consumption of vegetables and animal foods, millets also are the major suppliers of micronutrients especially for low-income groups. It is of prime importance to study how millets perform in terms of bioavailable contents of trace metals. Investigations were carried out using weanling mice which offer a model for the initial testing of bioavailability of trace metals before human trials. Four isocaloric diets differing only i

Histidines promote zinc over cadmium binding to the single type 4 metallothionein from Great Millet (Sorghum bicolor).

Zinc and cadmium share similar chemical properties; however, while zinc is an indispensable microelement involved in several physiological processes, cadmium is highly toxic. Cadmium toxicity results at least to some extent from replacing zinc (and other metals) from their active sites in enzymes and other proteins. This highlights why the correct population of metalloproteins with metals is crucial for proper cellular metabolism. In the face of growing demand for food, both in terms of quantity and quality, a rapid development of crop cultivars containing a higher amount of bioavailable zinc
