Causes of mortality in farmed mink in the Intermountain West, North America.

The primary causes of mortality were identified in postmortem examination of 339 (90.9%) of 373 farmed mink (Neovison vison; syn. Mustela vison) from January 2009 through June 2014 at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Logan, Utah). Mink were raised under farm conditions in the Intermountain West in North America, except for 1 submission of mink from Wisconsin. In the 339 mink where cause(s) of death were established, 311 (91.7%) died from a single disease or condition, whereas 28 (8.3%) had 2 diseases or conditions contributing to death. Where cause(s) of death were evident, 11 diseas

An unusual case of spinal cord restricted mycobacteriosis in a European mink.

Granulomatous myelitis due to infection with Mycobacterium avium was diagnosed in a 4-year-old male neutered European mink (Mustela lutreola). The causative agent was detected by an acid-fast stain and further characterized by polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing of the PCR product. A thorough histological evaluation of the remaining organs revealed no granulomatous lesions or detectable acid-fast organisms. Although minks are generally highly susceptible for mycobacteria, localised infections, especially of the central nervous system, are unusual and may represent an atypical chronic

Pathogenesis of aleutian mink disease parvovirus and similarities to b19 infection.

Aleutian mink disease parvovirus (ADV) is an unusual member of the autonomous parvoviruses in both its replication and pathogenesis. Infection of newborn mink kits results in an acute disease typified by virus replication in type II pneumocytes in the lung. This replication is permissive and cytopathic, characterized by the production of high levels of viral replicative intermediates and infectious progeny. However, infection of adult Aleutian mink leads to a chronic form of the disease termed Aleutian disease (AD). In this case, virus replication occurs predominantly in lymph node macrophages

Characterization of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans in splenic AA amyloid induced in mink.

Amyloidosis of the protein AA type is readily induced in mink using repeated injections of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We have characterized splenic proteoglycans/glycosaminoglycans (PGs/GAGs) in mink during amyloidogenesis. Moderate to rich amounts of amyloid exhibiting green birefringence was demonstrated by polarization microscopy of the splenic section stained with Congo red in seven out of eight minks after 10 weeks of LPS-treatment, and a significant increase in the total amount of PGs and GAGs in AA amyloid spleens was observed (two to eight times that in unstimulated animals).

Failure of loop diuretics to induce nursing sickness in mink at weaning.

Nursing sickness in mink is thought to be precipitated by inadequate salt intake, whether this is due to inadequate salt levels in the diet or inadequate total dietary intake. To test this hypothesis, lactating females raising large litters were given 2 daily intramuscular injections of the loop diuretic furosemide (Lasix, 4 + 4 mg/kg/day) for 2.5 d during the normal weaning period 6 wk after parturition or served as untreated controls. Following the same protocol, barren mink (i.e. unsuccessfully mated females) were treated similarly. Dams were carefully inspected for clinical signs of nursin

Urinary protein excretion of semidomesticated mink in a chronic methylmercury study.

A model using semidomesticated mink was set up to study the effects of chronic oral methylmercury exposure in piscivorous mammals. Three groups of mink were fed daily with diets containing approximately 0.1, 0.5, and 0.9 micrograms/g of total mercury. Piscivorous and non-piscivorous fish, naturally contaminated with methylmercury, were used to prepare diets. Renal injury was evaluated using total urine protein/creatinine ratio and differentiation of urinary low-molecular-weight and high-molecular-weight proteins on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Risk assessment of a highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus from mink.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses in farmed mink and seals combined with isolated human infections suggest these viruses pose a pandemic threat. To assess this threat, using the ferret model, we show an H5N1 isolate derived from mink transmits by direct contact to 75% of exposed ferrets and, in airborne transmission studies, the virus transmits to 37.5% of contacts. Sequence analyses show no mutations were associated with transmission. The H5N1 virus also has a low infectious dose and remains virulent at low doses. This isolate carries the adaptive mutation, PB2 T271A,

Experimental infection with Toxoplasma gondii in farmed mink (Mustela vison S.).

Live Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts (Strain 119) were administered orally to five mink (Mustela vison S.) and five mink were inoculated with a suspension of ultrasonicated Toxoplasma gondii trophozoites (RH-strain). Seroconversion was observed in all animals administered live T. gondii cysts indicating that infection was established. Likewise seroconversion was observed in three out of four animals administered ultrasonicated T. gondii trophozoites. Faecal shedding of oocysts of T. gondii was not demonstrated in any of the infected animals. Histologically chronic meningitis with calcification

Interactions between melatonin and prolactin during gestation in mink (Mustela vison).

Immature female mink, 8 weeks of age in July, were treated with implants releasing melatonin. Mating, which induced ovulation, took place during the normal breeding season in the following March. Circulating prolactin and progesterone concentrations did not undergo the expected gestational increases, and no embryos implanted. A similar absence of gestational changes in prolactin and progesterone values ensued in primiparous mink treated with the melatonin implant 2-3 days after the second of 2 matings. Administration of exogenous sheep prolactin (0.5 mg/day) by minipump induced precocious elev

Recombinant canine distemper virus expressing virus-like particle VP2 protein of mink enteritis virus protects minks against lethal challenges of both viruses.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) and mink enteritis virus (MEV) are among the most devastating viruses in minks (Mustela vison). They often cause two fatal diseases-canine distemper (CD) and mink viral enteritis (MVE)-resulting in severe respiratory symptoms and acute enteritis in breeding minks, respectively. Here, using the attenuated CDV vaccine strain CDV3-CL (currently employed in breeding mink in China) as a backbone, we constructed a recombinant strain, rCDV3-mVP2, expressing the wild-type MEV capsid protein VP2. Notably, the VP2 protein expressed by this recombinant virus assembles into vi

Molecular Cloning and Bioinformatics Analysis of DQA Gene from Mink (Neovison vison).

In the present study, we cloned, sequenced, and explored the structural and functional characteristics of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-DQA gene from mink (Neovison vison) for the first time. The full-length sequence of DQA gene was 1147-bp-long, contained a coding region of 768-bp, which was predicted to encoding 255 amino acid residues. The comparison between DQA from mink (Neovison vison) and other MHC-DQA molecules from different animal species showed that nucleotide and encoded amino acid sequences of the mink DQA gene exhibited high similarity with the ferret (Mustela pulour

Stereotypic behaviour in farm mink (Neovison vison) can be reduced by selection.

In this article we present the first estimation of genetic variation of stereotypic behaviour (SB). Stereotypic behaviour is defined as an unvarying behaviour without any specific goal or function repeated at least five times. All types of SB were included in the analyses. Altogether 1484 adult mink females of the brown colour type were assessed for behaviour traits: SB, active or inactive behaviour, staying in nest box. Genetic correlations were based on estimates of additive genetic (co)variances obtained from a trivariate linear animal model fitted to behaviour traits, body weight and litte

Identification of two biologically distinct strains of transmissible mink encephalopathy in hamsters.

Experimental transmission of the Stetsonville, Wisconsin, U.S.A. source of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) to outbred Syrian golden hamsters resulted in two distinct syndromes, termed hyper (HY) and drowsy (DY), that diverge by the third hamster passage. The syndromes differed with respect to clinical signs, incubation period, brain titre, brain lesion profile and pathogenicity in mink. HY hamster TME had an incubation period of 65 +/- 1 days and was characterized by clinical signs of hyperaesthesia and cerebellar ataxia. Lethargy and the absence of hyperexcitability or cerebellar atax

The black mink (Mustela vison). A natural model of immunologic male infertility.

Breeding for fine black fur has generated a colony of mink wherein 20-30% of the males are infertile. Two clinical groups are distinguishable: one being infertile from the start (primary infertility), and the other infertile after one or more years of fertility (secondary fertility). Although the etiology of primary infertility is unknown, the available data indicate that secondary infertility is associated with an autoimmune disease of the testis. Thus, male mink with secondary infertility have (a) higher prevalence and levels of anti-sperm antibody when compared with animals with primary inf

Lesions in mink (Mustela vison) infected with giant kidney worm (Dioctophyma renale).

Adult Dioctophyma renale occupied the enlarged renal pelvis of the right kidney of naturally infected mink. Lesions in the kidney parenchyma consisted of connective tissue proliferation in the interstitial tissue, tubular atrophy and fibrosis, and periglomerular fibrosis. The luminal surface of the renal pelvis wall was formed of numerous papillae covered with transitional epithelium. The nematodes in the lumen were bathed in an albuminous fluid containing red blood cells, epithelial cells and D. renale eggs. The left (uninfected) kidney was 60% larger than the left kidney of normal mink.
