Racial and ethnic minority groups, female sex, and tissue loss are associated with increased risk for hospital readmission following revascularization for chronic limb-threatening ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned hospital readmission following surgery for peripheral arterial disease is among the highest in all diagnosis-related groups. Although previous studies have examined readmissions in certain subgroups, such as for patients undergoing lower extremity bypass, few have examined longer term readmissions for those with the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease, chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Among patients with CLTI undergoing revascularization, we sought to outline rates of readmission beyond 30 days up to 1 year and identify patient and procedural characte

Loving-kindness in the treatment of traumatized refugees and minority groups: a typology of mindfulness and the nodal network model of affect and affect regulation.

This article discusses how loving-kindness can be used to treat traumatized refugees and minority groups, focusing on examples from our treatment, culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral therapy (CA-CBT). To show how we integrate loving-kindness with other mindfulness interventions and why loving-kindness should be an effective therapeutic technique, we present a typology of mindfulness states and the Nodal Network Model (NNM) of Affect and Affect Regulation. We argue that mindfulness techniques such as loving-kindness are therapeutic for refugees and minority populations because of their pote

Rejection as a call to arms: inter-racial hostility and support for political action as outcomes of race-based rejection in majority and minority groups.

Both majority and minority group members fear race-based rejection, and respond by disparaging the groups that they expect will reject them. It is not clear, however, how this process differs in minority and majority groups. Using large representative samples of White (N= 4,618) and Māori (N= 1,163) New Zealanders, we found that perceptions of race-based rejection predicted outgroup negativity in both groups, but in different ways and for different reasons. For White (but not Māori) New Zealanders, increased intergroup anxiety partially mediated the relationship between cognitions of rejection

The effectiveness of "Exercise on Prescription" in stimulating physical activity among women in ethnic minority groups in the Netherlands: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lack of physical activity is an important risk factor for overweight, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. In the Netherlands, ethnic minority groups are generally less physically active and rate their own health poorer compared to ethnic Dutch. This applies in particular to women. For this reason women from ethnic minority groups are an important target group for interventions to promote physical activity. In the Netherlands, an exercise referral program ("Exercise on Prescription") seems successful in reaching women from ethnic minority groups, in particu

A case report of a family with MYH9 gene mutation-related disease in an ethnic minority group and literature review.

BACKGROUND: May-Hegglin anomaly, a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by MYH9 mutations, is characterized by the classic "triad" of thrombocytopenia, giant platelets, and granulocyte cytoplasmic inclusion bodies; some patients also present non-hematological symptoms. RESULTS: We reported a family of MYH9-related disease. The proband had microscopic hematuria, proteinuria, and thrombocytopenia on physical examination; blood smear re-examination showed giant platelets and Döhle-like bodies. His medical history included childhood epistaxis; his father had unexplained thrombocytopenia/protein

Analysis of genetic polymorphisms for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Chinese Tujia ethnic minority group.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can cause vision loss or blindness in elderly. The associations between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and AMD in Chinese Tujia ethnic minority group are still unclear. METHODS: A total of 2122 Tujia volunteers were recruited and 197 of them were diagnosed with AMD (either dry or wet type). Then the blood specimens of these 197 AMD patients and 404 controls from the remaining 1925 normal Tujia volunteers were collected to detect the frequencies of 39 chosen SNPs. The Bonferroni method was used to correct the P values from the Fisher's ex

Effects of Minority Stress, Group-Level Coping, and Social Support on Mental Health of German Gay Men.

OBJECTIVE: According to epidemiological studies, gay men are at a higher risk of mental disorders than heterosexual men. In the current study, the minority stress theory was investigated in German gay men: 1) it was hypothesized that minority stressors would positively predict mental health problems and that 2) group-level coping and social support variables would moderate these predictions negatively. METHODS: Data from 1,188 German self-identified gay men were collected online. The questionnaire included items about socio-demographics, minority stress (victimization, rejection sensitivity,

Enabling older homeless minority women to overcome homelessness by using a life management enhancement group intervention.

This paper describes the importance of a life management enhancement (LME) group intervention for older minority women in developing personal control and self-confidence in social relationships as they overcome homelessness. Women in the treatment group showed significantly greater personal control and higher levels of self-confidence following the six-week intervention than women in the control group. Increasing personal control and developing self-confidence in social relationships can help individuals achieve desired outcomes as a result of their actions, efforts, and abilities. These attri

Co-Designing an Engagement Strategy to Include the Voices of a Minority Group in Assessing the Quality of Maternity and Neonatal Care.

INTRODUCTION: This study outlines the co-design approach taken to engagement with women from the Roma community to capture their experience of maternity and neonatal care in Ireland. The findings of this study will be used to assess the relevance and completeness of measures of quality and safety of maternity care in capturing these experiences. METHODS: An engagement strategy was co-designed with Cairde, a community health development organisation. A series of four workshops were co-designed to facilitate open discussion with women from the Roma community (n = 8) on their experiences and per

Risk of cardiac events in atypical transient ischaemic attack or minor stroke. The Dutch TIA Study Group.

Proposed guidelines for the diagnosis of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) involve interpretation of symptoms, so it can be very difficult to distinguish a TIA from other disorders, such as migraine, epilepsy, syncope, or neurosis. Atypical cerebral and visual events may be classified as TIA. To see whether TIA or stroke patients with atypical cerebral or visual symptoms are at high or low risk of cardiac complications, we prospectively followed 572 patients (entered into the Dutch multicentre TIA trial) with a diagnosis of TIA or minor ischaemic stroke, but whose symptoms did not fully accord

Understanding experiences and perceptions of perinatal mental health screening tools among under-served groups: A qualitative study of women from ethnic minority communities in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, are major global public health concerns. Screening for mental health problems in pregnancy supports early detection and treatment, improving outcomes for women and their families. However, mental ill health is not consistently identified in routine maternal practice, particularly among women from ethnic minority communities in high income countries like the United Kingdom. Although research has explored mental health screening tools among majority ethnic populations, there remains a notable lack of evidence regarding

Exploring ethnic minority and underserved groups' experiences of the National Health Service Cardiovascular Disease Health Check uptake in North East England: applying a behavioural insights, qualitative approach.

BACKGROUND: The North East of England has the lowest healthy life expectancy and the highest health inequalities of any region in England. The conventional model, whereby we 'expect' individuals to be motivated to attend a 'healthcare setting' to undergo cardiovascular disease (CVD) health checks every 5 years has low levels of uptake, with populations most at risk frequently failing to engage. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to gather behavioural insights into the barriers/challenges that limit engagement with the current NHS CVD Health Checks. METHODS DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPA

Complementary feeding practices and the associated risk of childhood obesity among ethnic minority groups living in high-income countries: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Complementary feeding (CF) is defined as the period from when exclusive breast milk and formula are no longer sufficient for meeting the infant's nutritional needs. The CF period occurs from birth to 23 months of age. Though the recommended guidelines for introducing CF is from around 6 months of age, data indicates that some infants are introduced to food earlier than 6 months which can predispose children to obesity and overweight. Obesity in ethnic minority groups (EMG) is higher than their native counterparts and often tracks into adulthood. Hence, our aim was to conduct a sy

Group B Streptococcus-Associated Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection Following Minor Ankle Trauma: A Case Report.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are rapidly progressive, life- and limb-threatening emergencies requiring immediate surgical source control. Group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is a rare cause of NSTIs in adults. We present a 44-year-old woman with poorly controlled diabetes who developed progressive right foot pain and swelling after minor ankle trauma. Examination showed spreading erythema, crepitus, dusky discoloration, malodor, and a deep plantar wound, accompanied by marked leukocytosis and diabetic ketoacidosis. Computed tomography demonstrated infection exte

Monopoly of Minor Group Rhinovirus Infections in Hospitalised Children in Hong Kong During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: While rhinoviruses (RVs) typically cause mild respiratory infections, their persistence during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, particularly in Hong Kong's strict zero-coronavirus disease 2019 policy, revealed unexpected epidemiological patterns. Two distinct RV surges emerged despite stringent public health measures, suggesting unique transmission advantages among circulating strains. We hypothesised that RV persistence during pandemic restrictions reflected strain-specific adaptations in respiratory tract replication efficiency and/or immune evasion. METHODS: We analysed RV genotypes an

Prospective associations between bi+ minority stressors and internalizing symptoms: The mediating roles of general and group-specific processes.

Objective: The prevalence of anxiety and depressive (i.e., internalizing) disorders is higher among bi+ individuals (i.e., individuals with attractions to more than one gender and/or who identify as bisexual or pansexual) compared to both heterosexual and lesbian/gay individuals. Cross-sectional research has demonstrated that stressors unique to bi+ individuals are associated with internalizing symptoms. However, longitudinal research examining these associations and underlying mechanisms is extremely limited. Method: We utilized five waves of data (6 months between waves) from a diverse sampl

Crossbow needle therapy of the Miao ethnic minority group for knee osteoarthritis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is commonly seen and has a high occurrence in the middle-aged and elderly. It is characterized by the degeneration and secondary bone hyperplasia of the articular cartilage; the pathologic changes are irreversible. Therefore, treatment of KOA is mainly focused on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, improving or restoring joint function, delaying disease progression, and increasing quality of life. Crossbow needle therapy of the Miao ethnic minority group is intended for KOA treatment and has been widely used. Studies of small sample size have seen signi
