Chondroitin sulfate degradation bolsters Proteus mirabilis growth and colonization of the catheterized urinary tract.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are negatively charged polysaccharides composed of repeating disaccharide units and are essential components of the extracellular matrix throughout numerous tissues. The bladder urothelium has a thick protective GAG layer that primarily consists of chondroitin sulfate (CS), heparan sulfate (HS), and hyaluronic acid (HA), and urinary tract pathogens must either degrade or otherwise circumvent this layer to infect the urothelium. In this study, we investigated GAG degradation by Proteus mirabilis, a common and persistent colonizer of the catheterized urinary tract. Almo

Isolation, Identification, and Biological Characterization of Proteus mirabilis Isolated from Beef Cattle in China.

Proteus mirabilis, a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae, is widely distributed in the environment and commonly colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of animals. Although traditionally regarded as an opportunistic zoonotic pathogen, increasing evidence suggests that it may also contribute to bovine diseases. However, information regarding the antimicrobial resistance, virulence determinants, and genomic characteristics of bovine-associated P. mirabilis in China remains limited. In this study, a P. mirabilis strain, designated A3, was isolated from one of 19 diarrheic adult beef cattle sampl

Characterization and intestinal pathogenicity of Proteus mirabilis isolated from broiler carcasses and processing environments.

Proteus mirabilis, a well-known urinary tract pathogen, is increasingly recognized as a food safety concern due to its frequent detection in meat products, particularly poultry. Sporadic reports indicate gastrointestinal symptoms linked to P. mirabilis, but the relationship between its genome, antibiotic resistance, and variable pathogenicity remains unclear. In this study, 142 P. mirabilis isolates were collected from broiler carcasses and processing environments in wet markets and industrial facilities to assess contamination levels. Thirty-six representative isolates were characterized for

Characterization of Proteus mirabilis isolated from ticks collected in Isiolo and Kilifi Counties, Kenya.

Proteus mirabilis is a zoonotic pathogen primarily associated with urinary tract infections but also implicated in systemic infections. While its clinical importance is well-established, its potential reservoirs and transmission routes remain underexplored, particularly in arthropod vectors. This study set out to determine the prevalence of P. mirabilis in the form of viable minimal infectivity rate in ticks collected from Isiolo and Kilifi Counties in Kenya. Ticks were sampled from cattle, camels, sheep, and goats. The collected ticks were surface sterilized and homogenized using zirconia bea

Genetic analysis of resistance and virulence characteristics of clinical multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolates.

OBJECTIVE: Proteus mirabilis is the one of most important pathogens of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. mirabilis severely limits antibiotic treatments, which poses a public health risk. This study aims to investigate the resistance characteristics and virulence potential for a collection of P. mirabilis clinical isolates. METHODS AND RESULTS: Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed fourteen MDR strains, which showed high resistance to most β-lactams and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and a lesser extent to quinolones. All the MDR

Genomic Investigation of Proteus mirabilis Isolates Recovered From Pig Farms in Zhejiang Province, China.

Proteus mirabilis is a common opportunistic zoonotic pathogen, and its ongoing acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes poses challenges to clinical treatments. Human-sourced whole genomic sequencing of human P. mirabilis isolates has been reported, but pig-sourced isolates have not been thoroughly investigated even though these animals can serve as reservoirs for human infections. In the current study, we report a molecular epidemiological investigation to unravel the antimicrobial and virulence gene risk factors for P. mirabilis contamination in 9 pig farms in 3 different cities in Zhej

Prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases, AmpC, and carbapenemases in Proteus mirabilis clinical isolates.

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is an opportunistic pathogen, causing a variety of community-acquired and nosocomial illnesses. It poses a potential threat to patients via the production of β-lactamases, which decrease the efficacy of antimicrobial treatment and impair the management of its pathogenicity. Hence, this study was established to determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), AmpC, and carbapenemases of P. mirabilis isolated from various clinical specimens. RESULTS: Proteus mirabilis was identified in 20.7% (58/280) of specimens. ESBL producers were present at a

Multidrug resistant Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli causing fulminant necrotising fasciitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare soft tissue infection characterized by rapid progressive necrosis with relative sparing of underlying muscles. This case is reported to highlight the emergence of multidrug resistant microbes in recent days which limits the use of empiric antibiotic therapy and necessitates early cultures and sensitivity enabling targeted antibiotic therapy. Factors that lead to antimicrobial resistance especially in sub-Saharan Africa have also been discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 52-year-old black man who was referred to our centre for the ma

Genomic analyses of a novel bacteriophage (VB_PmiS-Isfahan) within Siphoviridae family infecting Proteus mirabilis.

Proteus mirabilis is one of the most common causes of complicated urinary tract infections (UTI), especially in catheter-associated UTIs. The increased resistance to antibiotics, among P. mirabilis isolates has led us to search for alternative antibacterial agents. In this study, genome of a lytic Proteus phage VB_PmiS-Isfahan, isolated from wastewater, and active against planktonic and biofilms of P. mirabilis, isolated from UTI, was analyzed. Accordingly, the genome was sequenced and its similarity to other phages was assessed by the Mauve and EasyFig softwares. "One Click" was used for phyl

Reappraisal of the envenoming capacity of Euchambersia mirabilis (Therapsida, Therocephalia) using μCT-scanning techniques.

Euchambersia mirabilis is an iconic species of Permo-Triassic therapsid because of its unusually large external maxillary fossa linked through a sulcus to a ridged canine. This anatomy led to the commonly accepted conclusion that the large fossa accommodated a venom gland. However, this hypothesis remains untested so far. Here, we conducted a μCT scan assisted reappraisal of the envenoming capacity of Euchambersia, with a special focus on the anatomy of the maxillary fossa and canines. This study shows that the fossa, presumably for the venom-producing gland, is directly linked to the maxillar
