These case reports focus on a rapid treatment for persistent complex bereavement disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which appears to activate the mirror neuron network. Simulated reattachment is a technique which has been found to repair phantom limb pain in just a few sessions. The same neuroplasticity that accomplishes phantom pain relief has been found to occur in the treatment of complicated grief and PTSD using similar methods. The simulated reattachment for the client in Case one was found to significantly reduce the symptoms of both complicated grief and obsessive-compul

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show alterations in empathic abilities, potentially involving automatic simulation processes supported by mirror-like mechanisms in the somatosensory domain. Within the tactile mirror system (TaMS), observing touch on another person's body activates cortical regions involved in tactile perception, including the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Although mirror-like alterations have been suggested in BPD, the underlying mechanisms of plasticity remain underexplored. Here, we used a cross-modal paired associative stimulation (cm-PAS) protoc

The discovery of mirror neurons in macaques and of a similar system in humans has provided a new and fertile neurobiological ground for rooting a variety of cognitive faculties. Automatic sensorimotor resonance has been invoked as the key elementary process accounting for disparate (dys)functions, like imitation, ideomotor apraxia, autism, and schizophrenia. In this paper, we provide a critical appraisal of three of these claims that deal with the relationship between language and the motor system. Does language comprehension require the motor system? Was there an evolutionary switch from manu

OBJECTIVE: We studied the activation of cortical motor and parietal areas during the observation of object related grasping movements. By manipulating the type of an object (realistic versus abstract) and the type of grasping (correct versus incorrect), we addressed the question how observing such object related movements influences cortical rhythmicity, especially the mu-rhythm, in the context of an "extended" human mirror neuron system (MNS).
METHODS: Multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded during the observation of different object-related grasping actions in twenty healthy su

Philosophical and neuroscientific investigation on intentional actions focused on several different aspects, making difficult to define what should be meant with the concept of intention. Most of our everyday actions are constituted by complex and finely organized motor sequences, planned and executed in order to attain a desired final goal. In this paper, we will identify the final goal of the action as the motor intention of the acting individual. First, we will review the relative contribution of the vast neuroscientific literature on the role of different cortical areas in the organization

The ability to recognize a tool's affordances (how a spoon should be appropriately grasped and used), is vital for daily life. Prior research has identified parietofrontal circuits, including mirror neurons, to be critical in understanding affordances. However, parietofrontal action-encoding regions receive extensive visual input and are adjacent to parietofrontal attention control networks. It is unclear how eye movements and attention modulate parietofrontal encoding of affordances. To address this issue, scenes depicting tools in different use-contexts and grasp-postures were presented to h

The discovery of mirror neurons in the ventral premotor cortex (area F5) and inferior parietal cortex (area PFG) in the macaque monkey brain has provided the physiological evidence for direct matching of the intrinsic motor representations of the self and the visual image of the actions of others. The existence of mirror neurons implies that the brain has mechanisms reflecting shared self and other action representations. This may further imply that the neural basis self-body representations may also incorporate components that are shared with other-body representations. It is likely that such

Long-term limb nerve injury often leads to mirror-image pain (MIP), an abnormal pain sensation in the limb contralateral to the injury. Although it is clear that MIP is mediated in part by central nociception processing, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a key brain region that receives relayed peripheral nociceptive information from the contralateral limb. In this study, we induced MIP in male mice, in which a unilateral chronic constrictive injury of the sciatic nerve (CCI) induced a decreased nociceptive threshold in both hind limbs a

Since its original proposal, mirror therapy has been established as a successful neurorehabilitative intervention in several neurological disorders to recover motor function or to relieve pain. Mirror therapy seems to operate by reactivating the contralesional representation of the non-mirrored limb in primary motor- and somatosensory cortex. However, mirror boxes have some limitations which prompted the use of additional mirror visual feedback devices. The present study evaluated the utility of mirror glasses compared to a mirror box. We also tested the hypothesis that increased interhemisphe

Mirror-image pain (MIP), which occurs along with complex regional pain syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic migraine, is characterized by increased pain sensitivity of healthy body regions other than the actual injured or inflamed sites. A high level of peripheral inflammation may activate central or peripheral glia, triggering mirror-image pain. However, which receptors mediate inflammatory signals to contribute glial activation remains unclear. Intraplantarly injecting mice with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or acidic buffer (proton) caused only unilateral hyperalgesia, but co-injection o

Classical studies suggest that the anterior intraparietal area (AIP) contributes to the encoding of specific information such as objects and actions of self and others, through a variety of neuronal classes, such as canonical, motor and mirror neurons. However, these studies typically focused on a single variable, leaving it unclear whether distinct sets of AIP neurons encode a single or multiple sources of information and how multimodal coding emerges. Here, we chronically recorded monkey AIP neurons in a variety of tasks and conditions classically employed in separate experiments. Most cells

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease characterized by the progressive atrophy of both the first and the second motor neurons. Although the cognitive profile of ALS patients has already been defined by the occurrence of language dysfunctions and frontal deficit symptoms, it is less clear whether the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons affects motor imagery abilities. Here, we directly investigated motor imagery in ALS patients by means of an established task that allows to examine the presence of the effects of the biomechanical constraints. Twenty-three ALS p

The clinical use of mirror visual feedback was initially introduced to alleviate phantom pain by restoring motor function through plastic changes in the human primary motor cortex. It is a promising novel technique that gives a new perspective to neurological rehabilitation. Using this therapy, the mirror neuron system is activated and decrease the activity of those systems that perceive protopathic pain, making somatosensory cortex reorganization possible. This paper reports the results of the mirror therapy in three patients with phantom limb pain after recent lower limb amputation, showing

Instead of being the core stuttering 'problem', syllabic repetitions may be a biological mechanism, or 'solution', to the central involuntary stuttering block. Simply put, stuttering is an endogenous transitory state of 'shadowed speech', a choral speech derivative that allows for a neural release of the central block. To investigate this possibility, 14 adults who stutter read while listening to forward fluent speech, reversed fluent speech, forward stuttered speech, and reversed stuttered speech. All conditions induced significant degrees of stuttering inhibition when compared to a control c

Aim of this study was to investigate the association between finger and number representation in a task in which students had to perform arithmetic calculations and decide whether the provided solution was correct or incorrect, while a pair of task-irrelevant hands gesturally expressed the same or a different number. In particular we aimed at investigating whether irrelevant finger-counting might interfere with arithmetic computing, thus showing the existence of a strict neural association between the two processes. 20 volunteers took part to the investigation and EEG/ERPs were recorded from 1

We previously reported that college students who indicated engaging in frequent dream-enacting behaviors also scored high on a new measure of mirror behaviors, which is the propensity to imitate another person's emotions or actions. Since dream-enacting behaviors are frequently the culmination of nightmares, one explanation for the observed relationship is that individuals who frequently display mirror behaviors are also prone to nightmares. We used the Mirror Behavior Questionnaire (MBQ) and self-reported frequencies of nightmares to assess this possibility. A sample of 480 students, consisti

Coordination serves as a fundamental driving force in the evolution of human society, and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is increasingly recognized for its ability to modulate human coordination. However, the neural mechanisms underlying coordination and whether tES positively influences it remain under investigation. In this study, we explored the mechanisms of interbrain synchronization (IBS) and the neural efficiency enhancement of the mirror neuron system (MNS) using single multibrain tES combined with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning, with a focus on

Catatonia is a severe psychomotor disorder that is associated with a 60-fold increased risk of premature death. Its occurrence has been associated with multiple psychiatric diagnoses, the most common being type I bipolar disorder. Catatonia can be understood as a disorder of ion dysregulation with reduced clearance of intracellular sodium ions. As the intraneuronal sodium concentration increases, the transmembrane potential is increased, and the resting potential may ultimately depolarize above the cellular threshold potential creating a condition known as depolarization block. Optical microscopes are essential tools for magnifying and analysing a wide range of samples and are generally expected to faithfully preserve the original object in all its dimensions. However, depending on the optical design and software pipeline, many commonly used systems silently generate mirror-reversed images. This transformation alters handedness and therefore the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the object, unlike the simple 180° image rotation produced by lenses. We show that mirror inversion arises whenever the emission or detection path contains an odd number of reflective eleme

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) initiates a cascade of molecular and cellular reactions leading to long-term disturbances of neuronal and glial homeostasis. One of the key mechanisms of secondary injury is a pathological increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Parvalbumin (PV) plays an important role in the regulation of Ca2+ homeostasis in neurons. In turn, connexin 43 (Cx43) is the principal protein of astrocytic gap junctions (GJs), which ensure neuroglial communication. The spatiotemporal changes in these proteins and the mechanisms of their interaction after TBI remain insufficiently s
