The Complex Association Between Fear of Falling and Mobility Limitation in Relation to Late-Life Falls: A SHARE-Based Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines fear of falling (FOF) in relation to falls in light of mobility limitation. METHOD: Data on community-dwelling older Europeans, aged 65+, were drawn from two consecutive waves of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The analysis regressed fall status in 2013 on reported FOF 2 to 3 years earlier, controlling for previous falls. RESULTS: FOF predicted subsequent falls when mobility limitation was low to moderate. However, the effect of FOF on fall probability was reversed when mobility limitation was high. DISCUSSION: The analysis under

Work-related stress in midlife is associated with higher number of mobility limitation in older age-results from the FLAME study.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether work-related stress symptoms in midlife are associated with a number of mobility limitations during three decades from midlife to late life. Data for the study come from the Finnish Longitudinal Study of Municipal Employees (FLAME). The study includes a total of 5429 public sector employees aged 44-58 years at baseline who had information available on work-related stress symptoms in 1981 and 1985 and mobility limitation score during the subsequent 28-year follow-up. Four midlife work-related stress profiles were identified: negative reactions to

Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D predicts the onset of mobility limitation and disability in community-dwelling older adults: the Health ABC Study.

BACKGROUND: Although low 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is prevalent among older adults and is associated with poor physical function, longitudinal studies examining vitamin D status and physical function are lacking. We examined the association between 25(OH)D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and the onset of mobility limitation and disability over 6 years of follow-up in community-dwelling, initially well-functioning older adults participating in the Health, Aging and Body Composition study (n = 2,099). METHODS: Serum 25(OH)D and PTH were measured at the 12-month follow-up visit (1998-1999). Mobi

Advantages and limitations of mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: an overview of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has recently grown. Mobile bearing UKA, in which the bearing is not fixed but rather perfectly conforms with femoral and tibial components and moves completely passively between the femoral and tibial implant, has now been used for approximately half a century. AREAS COVERED: Alongside the recognized advantages of UKA, the mobile-bearing variant benefits from an extremely low rate of polyethylene wear and tolerable minor malalignment. Revision rates for UKA have been reported to exceed those of total knee arthroplasty, but lon

Predicting mobility using limited data during early stages of a pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior substantially. In this study, we explore the drivers of consumer mobility in several metropolitan areas in the United States under the perceived risks of COVID-19. We capture multiple dimensions of perceived risk using local and national cases and death counts of COVID-19, along with real-time Google Trends data for personal protective equipment (PPE). While Google Trends data are popular inputs in many studies, the risk of multicollinearity escalates with the addition of more relevant terms. Therefore, multicollinearity-alleviating methods a

Usability Study of a Multicomponent Exergame Training for Older Adults with Mobility Limitations.

The global population aged 60 years and over rises due to increasing life expectancy. More older adults suffer from "geriatric giants". Mobility limitations, including immobility and instability, are usually accompanied by physical and cognitive decline, and can be further associated with gait changes. Improvements in physical and cognitive functions can be achieved with virtual reality exergame environments. This study investigated the usability of the newly developed VITAAL exergame in mobility-impaired older adults aged 60 years and older. Usability was evaluated with a mixed-methods approa

Body Composition Remodeling and Incident Mobility Limitations in African Ancestry Men.

BACKGROUND: Mobility limitations are common, with higher prevalence in African Americans compared with whites, and are associated with disability, institutionalization, and death. Aging is associated with losses of lean mass and a shift to central adiposity, which are more pronounced in African Americans. We aimed to examine the association of body composition remodeling with incident mobility limitations in older men of African ancestry. METHODS: Seven-year changes in body composition were measured using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) of the calf and whole-body dual x-ray

Intersectional cohort change: Disparities in mobility limitations among older Singaporeans.

Mobility is fundamental to independent living, but past research on physical function and mobility in older adults has not considered both intersectional social identities and cohort change in tandem. This paper utilizes data on mobility limitations from older adults in multi-ethnic Singapore to test whether cohort change varies simultaneously by gender and ethnicity. Panel data (n = 9334 person-years) collected over six years (2009-2015) were used to estimate aging vector models. Findings show that after adjusting for all covariates, Malay and Indian males in later-born cohorts have an increa

Virus Size Analysis by Gas-Phase Mobility Measurements: Resolution Limits.

Electrospraying (ES) dissolved viral particles, followed by charge reduction and size analysis with a differential mobility analyzer (DMA), offers a flexible size-analysis tool for small particles in solution. The technique relies on pioneering work by Kaufman and colleagues, commercialized by TSI, and often referred to as GEMMA. However, viral studies with TSI's GEMMA have suffered from limited resolving power, possibly because of imperfections in either the instrument (DMA or charge reduction) or the sample solution preparation. Here, we explore the limits of the resolution achievable by GEM
