Although recognizing emotions from facial expressions appears effortless, the field is divided between vision-based accounts, which posit matching to learned visual templates, and embodied accounts, which posit recruitment of facial motor circuits. We propose an ambiguity-gated, developmentally calibrated architecture in which the recognition system draws on sensorimotor information primarily when visual evidence is insufficient, with early motor experience proposed to shape the threshold and gain of this contribution. We tested this model across three studies (N = 185) integrating dynamic pro

Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder of unknown etiology. It is characterized by non-progressive paralysis of the facial and abducens cranial nerves due to atrophy of their nuclei, often accompanied by malformations in the upper and lower limbs. This report aims to highlight the critical role of hospital dentistry in managing a 6-year-old patient with Moebius syndrome. The patient was on mechanical ventilation via tracheostomy following a cardiorespiratory arrest at birth and has been hospitalized in a long-term care institution. Feeding and medication were administered via gastrosto

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Möbius sequence (MBS) previously known as Möbius syndrome is a rare nonprogressive developmental defect of the rhombencephalon leading to congenital abducens (VIth) and facial (VIIth) nerve palsy. Echoencephalography is the first, safe, noninvasive, and cost-effective imaging modality available at bedside. No study on the use of echoencephalography in neonates for the diagnosis of MBS has been previously reported.
METHODS: In this single tertiary center study, more than 18,000 neonates underwent echoencephalographic imaging over the span of two decades. Imaging was per

Moebius syndrome is a highly variable syndrome with abducens and facial nerve palsy as core features. Strict diagnostic criteria do not exist and the inconsistency of the associated features makes determination difficult. To determine what features are associated with Moebius syndrome we performed a systematic literature review resulting in a composite case series of 449 individuals labeled with Moebius syndrome. We applied minimum criteria (facial and abducens palsy) to determine the prevalence of associated clinical features in this series. Additionally, we performed statistical cluster anal

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a congenital, non-progressive facial and abducens nerve palsy in the presence of full vertical gaze and may be associated with limb abnormalities and craniofacial dysmorphisms. MBS is now defined as a disorder of rhombencephalic maldevelopment and recent gene discoveries have shown this to be a dominant disorder in a subset of patients. Accurate diagnosis and management by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in congenital facial palsy is paramount.

Möbius syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by congenital bilateral facial nerve palsy. Abducent palsy or other cranial nerve palsy, facial malformations, limb malformations, and skeletal malformations are common features associated with this syndrome. We report a 9-month-old infant in whom congenital muscular disorder was previously suspected because of facial muscle involvement (mask-like face), respiratory and swallowing disturbances, and hypotonia since birth. After an improvement in the respiratory infection, she showed slightly exaggerated deep tendon reflexes and an improvement in

Möbius syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by unilateral or bilateral facial paralysis and defective extraocular eye movements secondary to congenital paresis of the facial (VII) and abducens (VI) cranial nerves. Associated dysfunction of other cranial nerves, orofacial abnormalities, and skeletal muscle hypotonia are common accompanying features. Given the multisystem involvement of Möbius syndrome, there are several potential perioperative concerns. Of primary importance to the anesthesia provider are the propensity for postoperative respiratory failure due to several pathological mech

Moebius syndrome is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CCDD) that presents with nonprogressive cranial nerve (CN) VI and VII palsies resulting in facial weakness and inability to abduct the eye(s). While many CCDDs have an underlying genetic cause, the etiology of Moebius syndrome remains unclear as most cases are sporadic. Here, we describe a pair of monochorionic, diamniotic twin girls; one with normal growth and development, and one with micrognathia, reduced facial expression, and poor feeding. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain performed on the affected twin at 19 months o

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with Möbius syndrome (MBS) and to explore likely pathogenic genes. Methods: Cross-sectional study. The study enrolled 18 sporadic MBS patients who visited the Eye Center of Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from July 2018 to December 2021. All patients completed the general information questionnaire and underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations and general physical examinations. Seventeen patients received MRI examination of cranial nerves and the orbit. The peripheral venous blood of all patients a

Möbius syndrome is a neurological disorder involving underdevelopment of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves. Multiple associations have been described including dysfunction of other cranial nerves, limb abnormalities and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism causing delayed puberty. We present the second reported case of Möbius syndrome associated with obesity and with precocious puberty. These features may be secondary to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. We highlight the need to consider extraocular symptoms in these patients and for close liaison with physicians in their manageme

Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by congenital facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. It is considered as a rhombencephalic disorder, and is often accompanied with hypoplasia of the pons and cerebellum. Here we report a male infant who had congenital facial asymmetry with absence of right-sided expression. Evident developmental delay was also found. The bilateral auditory brain stem response showed no response at 85dB. A reconstructive brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the absence of the right facial nerve as well as hypoplasia of the pons

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the congenital and genetic diagnoses that are currently included in the congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs).
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature contains new genotypic and phenotypic descriptions of Duane retraction syndrome, Moebius syndrome, and other CCDDs. New genes which when mutated can result in CCDD have been identified, permitting a better understanding of associated phenotypes. More information is available regarding neurodevelopmental and clinical effects of various gene mutations associated with individual CCDDs. For certain CCDDs, the p

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of Moebius syndrome (MBS) is difficult to assess. In the present study, we investigated the epidemiology of MBS in a well-defined population within a precise geographical area.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our university hospital is the only national referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of MBS. Participants in this cross-sectional study were patients affected by MBS who had been periodically followed by our medical staff since 1998. Most of the patients were referred to our hospital by the Italian Association of Moebius Syndrome (AISMO). Demographic data nece

PURPOSE: To evaluate salivary characteristics, such as flow rate, buffering capacity and amylase activity, and associate these parameters with oral health in individuals with Moebius syndrome (MS) and controls.
METHODS: The researchers assessed caries (ICDAS), periodontal disease (PSR), and plaque (Silness Löe) indexes in both groups. Unstimulated, stimulated, and bilateral parotid saliva were also collected. The salivary flow (milliliters/minute) and α-amylase activity were measured in all samples. The α-amylase activity was determined by maltose production. The buffering capacity was measur

Moebius syndrome is a rare disease characterized by congenital facial paralysis and abducens palsy. Involvement of other cranial nerves, orofacial dysmorphism, and limb abnormalities are frequently associated. Reported here is the case of a 10-month-old child born with Moebius syndrome and presenting with holoprosencephaly, following exposure in utero to misoprostol. To our knowledge, this is the first published case report describing this association. The etiologic hypotheses of Moebius syndrome are also discussed.

Moebius syndrome is an extremely rare disorder characterized by a lifetime facial paralysis, involving sixth and seventh cranial nerves with malformations of orofacial structures and the limbs. In this case, an 8 year old girl with Moebius syndrome is presented, clinical findings are described and management aspects are discussed. Early dental evaluation and parental counselling as a part of preventive dental regimen can go a long way in providing complete psychosocial rehabilitation for such physically disabled children.
