Marine Snails and Slugs: a Great Place To Look for Antiviral Drugs.

Molluscs, comprising one of the most successful phyla, lack clear evidence of adaptive immunity and yet thrive in the oceans, which are rich in viruses. There are thought to be nearly 120,000 species of Mollusca, most living in marine habitats. Despite the extraordinary abundance of viruses in oceans, molluscs often have very long life spans (10 to 100 years). Thus, their innate immunity must be highly effective at countering viral infections. Antiviral compounds are a crucial component of molluscan defenses against viruses and have diverse mechanisms of action against a wide variety of viruse

[A comparative study of the biogenic amine receptors in the muscle tissue of mollusks, echinoderms and tunicates].

Smooth muscles of Mollusca, Echinodermata and Tunicata contain one class of adrenoreceptors with the dissociation constant and maximal specific binding 2.5 and 82 in Anodonta, 2.3 and 320 in Holothuria, 4.9 pM and 232.5 fmol/mg of protein in ascidia. Catecholamines and their antagonists can be ranged in the row as follows: isoproterenol greater than adrenalin greater than propranolol-noradrenaline greater than phentolamine. Negative regulation of the beta-adrenoreceptor affinity to isoproterenol by means of guanine nucleotides (GN) was shown. The muscular tissues of Mollusca, Echinodermata and

[Current developments in dermatologic virology].

We give a survey of the latest developments in dermatovirology. The actual epidemiologic situation is described with special reference to the increasing incidences of AIDS, condylomata acuminata, mollusca contagiosa, and herpes simplex type 2. The dermatovirological progress achieved during the last few years is mostly due to improved diagnostic techniques, including electron microscopy, and to the introduction of specific virostatic agents.

[Treatment of molluscum contagiosum].

Puncture with a toothpick dipped in phenolum liquefactum is a suitable method for the treatment especially of small mollusca contagiosa in children. The danger of phenol intoxication through resorption during the treatment of multiple molluscs always must be borne in mind. Comparable studies in rats' nipples using the puncture technique showed that up to 0.7 mg phenol can be applied to one molluscum.

[Approaches to predicting the diphyllobothriasis and opisthorchiasis situation in connection with the reconstruction of the water supply economy in the USSR].

The effect of some physical-geographical and anthropogenic factors on the circulation of Diphyllobothriidae and Opisthorchis at the hydrotechnical objects of various regions of the USSR is analysed. It is emphasized that these factors affect primarily the first intermediate hosts of parasites. In opisthorchiasis changes in the intensity of the epidemic process may take place within the limits of mollusca distribution area. In diphyllobothriasis, the area of distribution may be expanded and new foci may be formed with the changes in the river hydroregimen.

Therapy of external anogenital warts and molluscum contagiosum: a literature review.

Anogenital warts and mollusca contagiosum are virally induced, benign skin tumors for which there is no single preferable therapy. Treatments include physical and chemical destruction, surgical removal, and biological response modifiers to enhance the natural immune response. The choice of therapy is an art, and depends upon patient preference, finances, number of lesions, and lesional morphology. However, the therapy of these lesions can sometimes be very painful and expensive, and therapy should not be worse than the disease.

Generalized Molluscum Contagiosum Successfully Treated with Interferon-Alpha in a Patient with Folliculotropic Mycosis Fungoides.

We present the case of a 50-year-old patient with folliculotropic mycosis fungoides (FMF) unresponsive to retinoids and the chemotherapeutic regimens CHOP, gemcitabine, and brentuximab-vedotin. During immunosuppressive therapy, the patient developed extensive progressive molluscum contagiosum. The mollusca did not respond to topical imiquimod but showed a swift complete response to interferon-alpha 2a (IFNa). Recently, the patient started with alemtuzumab as induction therapy for an allogenic stem cell transplantation and simultaneously continued IFNa therapy.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis abscesses complicating molluscum contagiosum in two children.

We report the occurrence of Staphylococcus lugdunensis abscesses in two girls with molluscum contagiosum who both required surgical intervention under general anaesthesia. S. lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus recently recognized as an emerging human pathogen. Because of its ubiquitous nature and the high prevalence of molluscum contagiosum in children, it is likely that this as yet unreported association may be underestimated, thus raising the question as to whether bacterial culture of superinfected mollusca should be obtained more often.

The chromosomal genome sequence of the buttercup lucine, Anodontia alba Link, 1807 (Lucinida: Lucinidae) and its associated microbial metagenome sequences.

We present a genome assembly from an individual Anodontia alba (buttercup lucine; Mollusca; Bivalvia; Lucinida; Lucinidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 1 862.85 megabases. Most of the assembly (99.28%) is scaffolded into 18 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 18.48 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly by Ensembl identified 12 083 protein-coding genes. From the metagenome data, we recovered four bins, of which three were high-quality MAGs.

Molluscum contagiosum in a soft fibroma: a particular combined lesion.

A case of a single molluscum contagiosum occurring on the surface of a preexisting soft fibroma in an adult patient is reported. The most common clinical form of this viral lesion is multiple grouping papules with a central umbilication and its histologic feature is characteristic. Previous cases of mollusca combining with other lesions have been rarely described. Our lesion was probably due to its localization on the soft fibroma, whose exophytic growing represented a favoring factor for trauma and the consequent occurrence of the viral disease.

Evolution of alpha-Gal synthesis - a growing risk for alpha Gal syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) is a growing burden worldwide associated with arthropods and allergies with pathologies such as urticaria, digestive and anaphylactic reactions. These reactions commonly appear 2-6 h after consumption of mammalian meat and derived pharmaceuticals mediated by immunoglobulin E against the oligosaccharide alpha-Gal epitope. OBJECTIVE: Despite the increasing incidence of AGS, it is underdiagnosed and requires information and initiatives to reduce disease risks and incidence while improving prevention and treatment. CONTENT: Our hypothesis is that Galactosyltr

A prospective randomized trial comparing the efficacy and adverse effects of four recognized treatments of molluscum contagiosum in children.

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral disease of childhood presenting as small, firm, dome-shaped umbilicated papules. Although benign and generally self-limited, this condition is contagious and can lead to complications such as inflammation, pruritus, dermatitis, bacterial superinfection, and scars. No consensus has been established concerning the management of this condition. We conducted a prospective randomized study comparing four common treatments for molluscum contagiosum in 124 children aged 1 to 18 years. One group was treated with curettage, a second with cantharidin, a third with

[Epidemiology of skin diseases in HIV-infected patients: a prospective cohort study].

Along with the rising AIDS epidemic, the recognition of mucocutaneous lesions indicating HIV infection is important not only for dermatologists but also for general practitioners. During 36 months we prospectively followed 357 HIV-1-infected patients on a regular base, and all the dermatologic findings were evaluated statistically. Several skin problems such as seborrheic dermatitis, may occur early in HIV infection. Mollusca contagiosa, oral hairy leukoplakia and Kaposi's sarcoma are often clinical signs of marked disease progression with very low CD4-cell counts.

Swimming behavior of the nudibranch Melibe leonina.

Swimming in the nudibranch Melibe leonina consists of five types of movements that occur in the following sequence: (1) withdrawal, (2) lateral flattening, (3) a series of lateral flexions, (4) unrolling and swinging, and (5) termination. Melibe swims spontaneously, as well as in response to different types of aversive stimuli. In this study, swimming was elicited by contact with the tube feet of the predatory sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides, pinching with forceps, or application of a 1 M KCl solution. During an episode of swimming, the duration of swim cycles (2.7 +/- 0.2 s [mean +/- SEM],

Successful treatment of molluscum contagiosum in the immunosuppressed adult with topical injection of streptococcal preparation OK-432.

A 37-year-old Japanese woman received an anticancer drug for 5 years following resection of mammary cancer and then developed widespread mollusca contagiosa, which we considered to be caused by immunosuppression induced by the chemotherapy. Because OK-432 (penicillin-treated and heat-treated lyophilized powder by a substrain of Streptococcus pyogenes A) was expected to be effective for immunosuppression, we tried its topical injection. The skin lesions disappeared almost completely within three months. OK-432 therapy is considered hopeful for treating viral skin diseases, even in immunosuppres
