Morphological and molecular descriptions of Moniliformis saudi sp. n. (Acanthocephala: Moniliformidae) from the desert hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg) in Saudi Arabia, with a key to species and notes on histopathology.

A new acanthocepohalan species, Moniliformis saudi sp. n. is described from the desert hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg), in central Saudi Arabia. Fourteen other valid species of Moniliformis Travassos, 1915 are recognised. The new species of Moniliformis is distinguished by having a small proboscis (315-520 µm long and 130-208 µm wide) with two apical pores, 14 rows of 8 hooks each and small hooks, thre largest being 25-31 µm long anteriorly. Distinguishing features are incorporated in a dichotomous key to the species of Moniliformis. The description is augmented by scanning elect

Rat bite fever, a diagnostic challenge: case report and review of 29 cases.

Rats can transmit Streptobacillus moniliformis, which may cause rat-bite fever (RBF), a rare and potentially lethal zoonosis. Fastidious in vitro growth and unspecific symptoms, including fever, arthralgia, and polymorphous skin lesions, complicate the diagnosis. Rat-bite fever follows exposure to contaminated bodily fluids of infected rodents; however, reports on Streptobacillus moniliformis-related infections are few so far. A female patient presented with painful hemorrhagic pustules and purpuric lesions on hands and feet. She developed fever and migratory polyarthralgia. Blood culture yiel

Rat Bite Fever: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Cases of rat-bite fever (RBF) were reported in the literature for more than 2000 years. Not until recently, however, were attempts made to differentiate between RBF and Streptobacillus moniliformis septic arthritis, 2 arguably different clinical entities. There are limited data regarding S moniliformis septic arthritis and the features that distinguish it from RBF, and most conclude that although clinically disparate diseases, it is difficult to differentiate between them. We report a case of a 17-year-old girl who presented with S moniliformis bacteremia and symptoms that spanned both RBF and

A case of septic arthritis from rat-bite fever in Hawai'i.

BACKGROUND: Infection associated with a rat bite has been known for centuries. Streptobacillus moniliformis is a zoonotic organism identified in the 20th century as the causative agent of most cases of rat bite fever outside of mainland Asia. There are no previously published cases of this pathogen in Hawai'i. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of Streptobacillus moniliformis causing septic polyarthritis in a 59-year-old Hawaiian man with a history of alcohol abuse and recurrent exposure to rodents in his apartment. Blood cultures from the patient were negative. The organism was is

Surgical Management of Multijoint Septic Arthritis due to Rat-Bite Fever in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Study.

In the United States, rat-bite fever is a rare systemic illness principally caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis, an organism found in the nasopharyngeal flora of rodents. Infection through direct exposure to rat excreta such as saliva, urine, or feces can lead to fever, rash, and an asymmetric migratory polyarthritis. As rodents are becoming more popular as pets, more pediatric cases are being documented. We report a pediatric case of delayed onset septic arthritis in the left wrist and right knee due to S. moniliformis from a rat bite. Previously reported pediatric case studies of suppurat

Atypical rat bite fever associated with knee joint infection in a Chinese patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare zoonosis transmitted from rodents to humans through bites and scratches. However, diagnosis and treatment of atypical clinical cases can be challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report an atypical case of RBF with unilateral knee joint infection caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. Streptobacillus moniliformis was isolated from the knee synovial fluid of the patient via microbiological culture and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). After treatment with antibiotics and arthroscopic surgery, the patient reported symptom alleviation

Infection in a Young Immunocompetent Male Caused by Streptobacillus felis, a Putative Zoonotic Microorganism Transmitted by Cats.

Rat bite fever (RBF) is predominantly caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. We report a human infection with Streptobacillus felis. Clinical presentation was consistent with RBF, but serologic testing was negative for S moniliformis. Eventually, S felis-specific sequences were detected in skin lesions of the patient and in the oropharynx of local cats.

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characteristics of Members of the Genus Streptobacillus.

The genus Streptobacillus (S.) remained monotypic for almost 90 years until two new species were recently described. The type species, S. moniliformis, is one of the two etiological agents of rat bite fever, an under-diagnosed, worldwide occurring zoonosis. In a polyphasic approach field isolates and reference strains of S. moniliformis, S. hongkongensis, S. felis as well as divergent isolates were characterized by comparison of molecular data (n = 29) and from the majority also by their physiological as well as proteomic properties (n = 22). Based on growth-independent physiological profiling

Rat-bite fever diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction of a bite-site crust specimen three weeks after exposure: a case report.

Rat-bite fever (RBF), a zoonotic infection caused mainly by Streptobacillus moniliformis (S. moniliformis), is challenging to diagnose due to the difficulty of isolating the causative pathogen, which can delay the diagnosis or lead to inappropriate treatment. We report herein a case of RBF in which polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of a crust specimen from the bite site diagnosed the condition as late as three weeks after the exposure. A previously healthy, 66-year-old, female patient presented with a fever and migratory, asymmetric polyarthritis three weeks after being bitten on her lef

Internal parasitic burdens in brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) from Grenada, West Indies.

This study identified the endoparasites in Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) during May to July 2017 in Grenada, West Indies. A total of 162 rats, 76 females and 86 males were trapped from St. George and St. David parishes in Grenada. The collected fecal samples were examined for parasitic eggs and/or oocysts using simple fecal flotation technique. Adult parasites found in the intestinal tract were examined for identification. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites among rats was 79 %. Ten helminth species were recovered, several of which were reported for the first time in rodents in Gren

Prevalence of fleas and gastrointestinal parasites in free-roaming cats in central Mexico.

The prevalence of fleas and gastrointestinal parasites in free-roaming and domestic cats in central Mexico was evaluated. Three hundred and fifty eight cats captured in the street or brought in by owners to the Animal Control Center Unit, a unit of State Government, from June 2010 to May 2011, were included in the study. All cats were examined for the presence of fleas and gastrointestinal worms. One-hundred and ninety (53%) cats were infested with at least one flea species. Single infestations were observed in 106 (30%) cats and mixed infestations in 84 (23%) cats. Four species of fleas were

Rat bite fever.

Rat bite fever (RBF) is a bacterial zoonosis for which two causal bacterial species have been identified: Streptobacillis moniliformis and Spirillum minus. Haverhill fever (HF) is a form of S. moniliformis infection believed to develop after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Here the infectious agents, their host species, pathogenicity (virulence factors and host susceptibility), diagnostic methods, therapy, epidemiology, transmission and prevention are described. Special emphasis is given on information from the field of laboratory animal microbiology and suggestions for future researc

Rat-bite fever--New Mexico, 1996.

Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a systemic bacterial illness caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis that can be acquired through the bite or scratch of a rodent or the ingestion of food or water contaminated with rat feces. Cases are rarely reported in the United States and the true incidence of disease is unknown. On August 7, 1996, a physician in a rural community reported a case of infection with S. moniliformis bacteremia in a 15-year-old boy to the New Mexico Department of Health. This report summarizes the results of the investigation of this case and indicates the need for ongoing surveillance

Rat-bite fever as a cause of septic arthritis: a diagnostic dilemma.

Rat-bite fever results from an infection with the organism Streptobacillus moniliformis. Symptomatic patients often present with fever, malaise, cough, maculopapular rash, and occasional arthritis, and usually have a history of rodent exposure. This report describes a patient with rat-bite fever resulting in suppurative arthritis. The patient's diagnosis was made by culture of S moniliformis from his left wrist. The diagnosis was delayed, however, owing to the lack of an exposure history, atypical clinical presentation, and the unusual microbiologic characteristics shown by this organism.

Septic arthritis of the hip secondary to rat bite fever: a case report.

Rat bite fever is a rare infection typically caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis. The mode of transmission is most commonly through a bite or scratch from an infected rat. This disease is characterized by polyarthritis, fever, and a delayed onset erythematous maculopapular rash of the extremities. The authors report a case of rat bite fever, which led to septic arthritis of the hip. To the authors' knowledge, the complication of hip sepsis requiring an arthrotomy has not been reported in the literature. The orthopaedist should be aware of not only Streptobacillus moniliformis, but also of o
