Using Neural Response Telemetry to Monitor Physiological Responses to Acoustic Stimulation in Hybrid Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVE: This report describes the results of a series of experiments where we use the neural response telemetry (NRT) system of the Nucleus cochlear implant (CI) to measure the response of the peripheral auditory system to acoustic stimulation in Nucleus Hybrid CI users. The objectives of this study were to determine whether they could separate responses from hair cells and neurons and to evaluate the stability of these measures over time. DESIGN: Forty-four CI users participated. They all had residual acoustic hearing and used a Nucleus Hybrid S8, S12, or L24 CI or the standard lateral wa

Non-invasive monitoring of glucocorticoid metabolites in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) in response to physiological and biological challenges.

Free-ranging banded mongooses are infected by the novel pathogen, Mycobacterium mungi in northern Botswana. A reliable method for determining stress-related physiological responses in banded mongooses will increase our understanding of the stress response in M. mungi infection. Therefore, our aim was to examine the suitability of four enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) for monitoring adrenocortical endocrine function in captive and free-ranging banded mongooses based on fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) analysis. A conducted adrenocorticotropic hormone challenge revealed suitability of a valid mea

Integrated haemodynamic monitoring of fluid responsiveness and fluid tolerance in critical care: from physiology to bedside applications.

The framework of fluid responsiveness addresses only whether volume expansion will augment cardiac output, not whether the circulation can accept that volume without producing congestive organ injury. The complementary concept of fluid tolerance has accumulated empirical support over recent years and is integral to understanding patients' fluid status. This narrative review synthesises the physiological basis of fluid responsiveness and fluid tolerance, describes the bedside monitoring tools available to assess each, and considers the clinical implications of their joint interpretation in crit

Metabolic responses to physiological stressors assessed using continuous glucose monitoring integrated with indirect calorimetry in mice.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in rodents has provided unprecedented temporal resolution of glycemic dynamics in vivo. Even in the absence of deliberate perturbation, glucose levels in mice are dynamic, fluctuating in response to the timing and duration of feeding events, changes in neurological and hormonal states, physical activity, and photoperiod. To obtain a comprehensive view of metabolic adaptations under common experimental conditions, we monitored freely moving mice simultaneously using CGM and indirect calorimetry to quantify glucose, food intake, physical activity and metabolic

A Systematic Review of Wearable Sensors in Rett Syndrome-What Physiological Markers Are Informative for Monitoring Disease States?

Rett syndrome (RTT) presents with a wide range of symptoms spanning various clinical areas. Capturing symptom change as the disorder progresses is challenging. Wearable sensors offer a non-invasive and objective means of monitoring disease states in neurodevelopmental disorders. The goal of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review to critically appraise the literature on the use of wearable sensors in individuals with RTT. The PRISMA criteria were used to search four databases without time restriction and identified 226 records. After removing duplicates, the titles and abstrac

External auricle temperature enhances ear-based wearable accuracy during physiological strain monitoring in the heat.

Body core temperature (Tc) monitoring is crucial for minimizing heat injury risk. However, validated strategies are invasive and expensive. Although promising, aural canal temperature (Tac) is susceptible to environmental influences. This study investigated whether incorporation of external auricle temperature (Tea) into an ear-based Tc algorithm enhances its accuracy during multiple heat stress conditions. Twenty males (mean ± SD; age = 25 ± 3 years, BMI = 21.7 ± 1.8, body fat = 12 ± 3%, maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) = 64 ± 7 ml/kg/min) donned an ear-based wearable and performed a passive

Serial monitoring of the physiological effects of the standard Pico-Salax® regimen for colon cleansing in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Sodium picosulfate⁄magnesium oxide⁄citric acid (Pico-Salax, Ferring Inc, Canada) is used widely in Canada and other countries for colon cleansing before colonoscopy. It is a low-volume osmotic⁄stimulant agent with the potential to deplete intravascular volume and alter electrolyte balance, yet there are little data regarding its effects on these clinically important end points. OBJECTIVE: To serially measure parameters of intravascular volume and electrolyte status in healthy volunteers over a 24 h period using the standard two-sachet dosing. METHODS: Twenty volunteers were given

Abnormal transient internal sphincter relaxation in idiopathic pruritus ani: physiological evidence from ambulatory monitoring.

Patients with idiopathic pruritus ani have an abnormal rectoanal inhibitory reflex and a lower threshold for internal sphincter relaxation during the saline continence test. This led to the hypothesis that these patients may exhibit abnormalities of the transient internal anal sphincter relaxation reflex. To study this, 23 men of median age 41 (range 27-64) years with idiopathic pruritus ani and 16 male controls of median age 39 (range 26-68) years were assessed using computerized ambulatory anorectal electromyography and manometry. Toward robust AI-based ECG R-peak detection for real-time physiological monitoring in operational environments.

Reliable estimation of heart rate variability (HRV) from electrocardiography (ECG) depends on accurate detection of R-peaks, a task that becomes challenging in operational environments characterized by noise, motion artifacts, and monitoring-grade sensor configurations. While classical detection algorithms perform well under controlled conditions, their robustness is often limited in realistic settings. This study investigates whether artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches can achieve robust R-peak detection in noisy operational ECG recordings, providing a reliable foundation for downst

Pilot Room-Level Acoustic and Physiological Monitoring of Respiratory Disturbance in Pigs Following Experimental Klebsiella pneumoniae Challenge.

Respiratory disease remains a major challenge in pig production. This two-room pilot study evaluated whether room-level acoustic monitoring combined with physiological measurements could provide an early warning after an experimental Klebsiella pneumoniae challenge. Forty growing pigs balanced by sex and body weight were housed for 28 days in one control room and one challenged room (20 pigs/room; four pens/room). Challenged pigs were intranasally inoculated on days 8, 12, 16, and 20 with a culture whose dose was retrospectively verified by serial-dilution plating. Nasal and fecal samples were

Continuous monitoring of physiological data using the patient vital status fusion score in septic critical care patients.

Accurate and standardized methods for assessing the vital status of patients are crucial for patient care and scientific research. This study introduces the Patient Vital Status (PVS), which quantifies and contextualizes a patient's physical status based on continuous variables such as vital signs and deviations from age-dependent normative values. The vital signs, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, mean arterial blood pressure, and temperature were selected as input to the PVS pipeline. The method was applied to 70 pediatric patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), and its eff

Mode of action characterization for adverse effect of propranolol in Daphnia magna based on behavior and physiology monitoring and metabolite profiling.

Studies are underway to gather information about the mode of action (MOA) of emerging pollutants that could guide practical environmental decision making. Previously, we showed that propranolol, an active pharmaceutical ingredient, had adverse effects on Daphnia magna that were similar to its pharmaceutical action. In order to characterize the mode of action of propranolol in D. magna, which is suspected to be organ-specific pharmaceutical action or baseline toxicity, we performed time-series monitoring of behavior along with heart rate measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based m

Assessing interactions among multiple physiological systems during walking outside a laboratory: An Android based gait monitor.

Gait function is traditionally assessed using well-lit, unobstructed walkways with minimal distractions. In patients with subclinical physiological abnormalities, these conditions may not provide enough stress on their ability to adapt to walking. The introduction of challenging walking conditions in gait can induce responses in physiological systems in addition to the locomotor system. There is a need for a device that is capable of monitoring multiple physiological systems in various walking conditions. To address this need, an Android-based gait-monitoring device was developed that enabled

Three decades of hemodynamic monitoring (1995-2025): from invasive pressure based hemodynamic profiling to functional physiology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hemodynamic monitoring has undergone a profound transformation over the last 30 years. The field has transitioned from the "standard of care" invasive pulmonary artery catheterization (PAC) toward minimally invasive and noninvasive technologies. This evolution is characterized by a shift in clinical philosophy. RECENT FINDINGS: A very strong shift away from the measurement of static pressures and flow defining specific hemodynamic profiles to the assessment of functional physiology and fluid responsiveness characterize the main changes in hemodynamic monitoring over this ti

Laser-Induced Functionalization of Flexible Polyimide-Carbon Fiber for Real-Time Multimodal Physiological Monitoring of Chronic Wounds.

Translating laser‑induced graphene (LIG) from rigid planar films to wearable textiles has been limited by substrate transfer steps that fracture the porous carbon architecture. Here, we report laser‑induced functionalized fibers (LIFF), a transfer‑free strategy that directly writes graphitic carbon onto polyimide (PI) fiber substrates via laser irradiation, forming an in situ 3D conductive network. By optimizing defocus distance (z = -0.5 mm) and pulse density (PPI/DPI), we achieve subsurface graphitization and continuously program surface wettability without chemical or plasma treatment. This

A Wireless and Wearable Multimodal Sensor to Non-Invasively Monitor Transabdominal Placental Oxygen Saturation and Maternal Physiological Signals.

Poor placental development and placental defects can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and stillbirth. This study introduces two sensors, which use a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique to measure placental oxygen saturation transabdominally. The first one, an NIRS sensor, is a wearable device consisting of multiple NIRS channels. The second one, a Multimodal sensor, which is an upgraded version of the NIRS sensor, is a wireless and wearable device, integrating a motion sensor and multiple NIRS channels.
