BACKGROUND: Exposure to potentially morally injurious events is increasingly recognised as a concern across a range of occupational groups, including UK military veterans. Moral injury-related mental health difficulties can be challenging for clinicians to treat and there is currently no validated treatment available for UK veterans. We developed Restore and Rebuild (R&R) as a treatment for UK veterans struggling with moral injury-related mental health difficulties. This trial aims to examine whether it is feasible to conduct a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) of R&R treatment compared

AIMS: To examine moral distress and turnover intention among newly licensed nurses in the acute care setting.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS: We used purposive sampling to recruit newly licensed nurses working in the acute care setting in a multistate healthcare organisation. Participants completed a demographic survey, the Measure of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals and the Turnover Intention Scale-6 between May 2025 and June 2026. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance and multiple linear regression.
RESULTS: Of 203

People strive to be good people and good friends. Sometimes it's easy to know what it means to be both: Helping a friend is clearly the morally right thing to do and makes one a good friend. But life is not always so simple. What happens when a friend commits a moral transgression? Previous research demonstrates adults see this dilemma as a tradeoff-turning in an immoral friend makes the informant appear moral, but as a pretty crummy friend (Berry et al., 2024). The inverse is also true. Not turning in that friend is immoral, but is a sign of being a good friend. In three studies (N = 363 4- t

Ken Himma argues that a human being becomes a moral person at the commencement of brain activity. In response to Himma, the author offers (1) brief comments on Himma's project, (2) an alternative account of the human person that maintains that a human being is a human person by nature as long as it exists, and (3) a counterexample to Himma's position that shows it cannot account for the wrongness of the purposeful creation of anencephalic-like children. The author concludes with replies to two challenges to his position.

BACKGROUND: Empathy for patients' pain is a core component of compassionate nursing care and is increasingly recognised as important for care quality and workforce sustainability. Nursing interns commonly experience poor sleep quality and burnout during clinical placement, yet the interrelationships between these factors and pain empathy remain unclear.
AIM: To examine the association between sleep quality and pain empathy among nursing interns and the potential serial mediating roles of burnout and moral identity in this association.
DESIGN: A multicentre cross-sectional study.

The spectrum of practices termed "Female Genital Mutilation" (or FGM) by the World Health Organization is sometimes held up as a counterexample to moral relativism. Those who advance this line of thought suggest the practices are so harmful in terms of their physical and emotional consequences, as well as so problematic in terms of their sexist or oppressive implications, that they provide sufficient, rational grounds for the assertion of a universal moral claim--namely, that all forms of FGM are wrong, regardless of the cultural context. However, others point to cultural bias and moral double

BACKGROUND: There is minimal research exploring moral distress and its relationship to ethical climate among nurses working in acute care settings.
OBJECTIVES: Objectives of the study were to explore moral distress, moral residue, and perception of ethical climate among registered nurses working in an academic medical center and develop interventions to address study findings.
METHOD: A mixed-methods design was used. Two versions of Corley and colleagues' Moral Distress Scale, adult and pediatric/neonatal, were used in addition to Olson's Hospital Ethical Climate Survey. Participants were in

Background: Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) are at an increased risk for developing mental health disorders due to their socially stigmatized identities. Minority stress (i.e. discrimination, identity nondisclosure, internalized stigma) has been shown to impact mental health outcomes among SGMs. Both distal and proximal minority stressors may serve as potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which may lead to moral injury and trauma/stressor-related symptoms. Critically, minority stress-related moral injury among SGMs has never before been explored using a mixed-methods approach.Metho

Introduction: Potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) are events which conflict with an individual's deeply held moral convictions and beliefs. PMIE research has focused on potentially at-risk populations such as military personnel. However, limited research has examined PMIEs and their association with mental health and functioning in the general population. The current cross-sectional study aims to explore the prevalence of PMIEs and associated mental health and functioning in a UK representative sample. The secondary aim is to provide an overview of the health and wellbeing of the samp

BACKGROUND: Morally challenging situations arise frequently in contemporary pediatric practice. Despite this, few pediatric studies have examined how to support residents navigating these experiences or measure growth in this domain. To address this gap, we developed and piloted a longitudinal, multimodal curriculum designed to prepare residents to recognize and respond to moral challenges.
METHODS: Curriculum development followed Kern's six-step model and was informed by a previously published needs assessment and review of existing literature. A mixed-methods design evaluated the interventi

Traditional moral distress scales primarily measure sources rather than contextualized responses. This study developed and validated the Narrative Moral Distress Scale, a context-based instrument for assessing multidimensional moral distress in nurses and nursing students. In Phase 1, narrative stories and items were generated from previous qualitative transcripts of 32 nurses, followed by expert validation and face validation. Phase 2 involved testing with 291 nurses and 52 nursing students in Taiwan using Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and measurement invariance t

BACKGROUND: Moral injury is increasingly used to describe clinician distress after perceived moral transgression, forced complicity, or institutional betrayal. Its distinction from burnout and its empirical organisation in healthcare remain insufficiently defined.
METHODS: We combined a conceptual review with a document co-citation analysis of moral-injury literature indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection from 1961 to 2026 (20 April 2026). The network comprised 1573 cited references and 5497 co-citation links and was clustered in CiteSpace.
RESULTS: The network contained ten communiti

Proportionate palliative sedation (PPS) is an important therapeutic option for patients at the end of life who experience intractable suffering despite use of all conventional interventions. Clinical guidelines for PPS differ between institutions, often tailored to local practice patterns and the regulatory environment. While professional organizations encourage institutions to develop tailored PPS guidelines, the literature lacks robust discussion of the development process. In this article, we present two cases from Yale New Haven Hospital, and explore the associated practical and ethical ch

The disproportionate distribution of financial, educational, social, and medical resources between some rich countries of the northern hemisphere and less fortunate societies creates a moral challenge of global dimension. The development of new forms of highly advanced medical technologies, including neoorgans and xenografts, as well as the promotion of health literacy and predictive and preventive medical services might reduce some problems in allocational justice. Most governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) reject financial and other rewards for living organ donors thus indirect

Humans typically consider altruism a moral good and condition their social behavior on the moral reputations of others. Indirect reciprocity explains how social norms and reputations support cooperation: individuals cooperate with others who are considered good. Indirect reciprocity works when an institution monitors and publicly broadcasts moral reputations. Here we develop a theory of adherence to public monitoring in societies where individuals are, at first, independently responsible for evaluating the reputations of their peers. Using a mathematical model, we show that adherence to an ins

IMPORTANCE: Clinicians commonly experience moral distress related to potentially nonbeneficial life-sustaining treatments (LST). Hospitals' institutional culture (eg, shared beliefs, values, and practices), structures (eg, policies, practices, resource allocation), and societal-level factors (eg, national culture, local and national policies, medical hierarchies) may contribute to moral distress related to potentially nonbeneficial LST.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinicians' perspectives on how hospitals' institutional culture and structures might exacerbate, prevent, or mitigate the influence

Caring forms the philosophical and moral foundation of nursing, yet nursing education often reproduces the epistemic exclusion it professes to resist. Writing as a nursing educator and disability justice advocate, I employ philosophical hermeneutics and critical analysis to interpret nursing education through the intersecting frameworks of Noddings' ethics of care, critical disability theory, and Fricker's account of epistemic injustice. I argue that the faculty-student relationship functions as a moral microcosm in which nursing's ethical identity is either enacted or fractured, and that for
