First description of Rhodococcus equi infection in common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Rhodococcus equi is a terrestrial bacterium and a common pathogen in foals (Equus caballus), in which causes pneumonia. This report describes for the first time the infection caused by R. equi in a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stranded in the Calabrian coast, Italy. The post mortem examination of the animal revealed lesions in lung and colon. The animal was also positive to dolphin morbillivirus. The histological study showed lesions attributable to R. equi infection, such as pyogranulomatous bacterial pneumonia and chronic granulomatous colitis. Whole genome sequencing of th

Comprehensive analysis of the succinylome in Vero cells infected with peste des petits ruminants virus Nigeria 75/1 vaccine strain.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is currently the only member of the Morbillivirus caprinae species within the genus Morbillivirus of the family Paramyoxviridae. PPRV causes a highly contagious disease in small ruminants, especially goats and sheep. Succinylation is a newly identified and conserved modification and plays an important role in host cell response to pathogen infection. However, the extent and function of succinylation in Vero cells during PPRV infection remains unknown. RESULTS: In this study, a global profile of the succinylome in Vero cells infected with PPR

Post mortem investigations on cetaceans found stranded on the coasts of Italy between 1990 and 1993.

Detailed pathological and virological examinations were carried out on 25 cetaceans found stranded between 1990 and 1993 on the coasts of six Italian regions (Latium, Tuscany, Apulia, Abruzzo, Veneto and Sicily). There were 16 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), three bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), three Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), one rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis), one fin whale pup (Balaenoptera physalus), and one minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Apart from parasitic diseases (44 per cent), the most frequently detected lesions were pneumonia (68

Systemic toxoplasmosis in a five-month-old beaver, (Castor canadensis).

A 5-mo-old orphan beaver, Castor canadensis, died of severe systemic toxoplasmosis during rehabilitation. Histologic lesions included lymphohistiocytic encephalitis, myocarditis, and interstitial pneumonia with multinucleated cells. Intracytoplasmic cysts containing tachyzoites and bradyzoites identified as Toxoplasma gondii by immunohisto-chemistry were present in macrophages, type-II pneumocytes, and endothelial cells. Immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal morbillivirus antibody and transmission electron microscopy of lung revealed no evidence of concurrent paramyxoviral infection, as comm

Therapeutic targeting of measles virus polymerase with ERDRP-0519 suppresses all RNA synthesis activity.

Morbilliviruses, such as measles virus (MeV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), are highly infectious members of the paramyxovirus family. MeV is responsible for major morbidity and mortality in non-vaccinated populations. ERDRP-0519, a pan-morbillivirus small molecule inhibitor for the treatment of measles, targets the morbillivirus RNA-dependent RNA-polymerase (RdRP) complex and displayed unparalleled oral efficacy against lethal infection of ferrets with CDV, an established surrogate model for human measles. Resistance profiling identified the L subunit of the RdRP, which harbors all enzymat

First Gammaherpesvirus detection in a free-living Mediterranean bottlenose dolphin.

Recently, herpes viruses have been detected in different cetacean species from the Atlantic and in Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). While pathogens such as cetacean morbillivirus have been widely studied following recent epizootics, herpesvirus (HV) distribution and pathogenic effects in cetaceans are still understudied. This study reports the first molecular identification of a Gammaherpesvirus in the genital mucosa of a free-living Mediterranean bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stranded off the coast of central Italy. Sequenced herpesviral PCR product was closel

INFECTIOUS DISEASE AND TOXICOLOGICAL MONITORING OF STRANDED PACIFIC HARBOR SEALS (PHOCA VITULINA RICHARDSI) IN COOK INLET AS SURROGATES FOR MONITORING ENDANGERED BELUGAS (DELPHINAPTERUS LEUCAS).

Pacific harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina richardsi) and belugas ( Delphinapterus leucas ) eat many of the same prey species, occupy the same geographic area, and demonstrate site fidelity in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Although most direct research involving the critically endangered belugas is currently prohibited, studying harbor seals may provide important information about this beluga population. In recent years, harbor seal populations in Alaska have declined for unknown reasons. As part of its stranding program, the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) managed 59 cases of live and dead stranded harbor seal

Does human proximity affect antibody prevalence in marine-foraging river otters (Lontra canadensis)?

The investigation of diseases of free-ranging river otters (Lontra canadensis) is a primary conservation priority for this species; however, very little is known about diseases of river otters that forage in marine environments. To identify and better understand pathogens that could be important to marine-foraging river otters, other wildlife species, domestic animals, and humans and to determine if proximity to human population could be a factor in disease exposure, serum samples from 55 free-ranging marine-foraging river otters were tested for antibodies to selected pathogens. Thirty-five an

[Corneal manifestations of measles in the unvaccinated adult: two typical cases during an epidemic].

Measles is a disease due to morbillivirus, which belongs to the paramyxoviridae subfamily. It affects mostly young patients, and evolves through four phases: incubation, invasion, eruption and desquamation. Ophthalmic manifestations may occur during the invasive and eruptive phases. Conjunctivitis is the most common ophthalmologic manifestation and is often asymptomatic. Measles keratitis is the most concerning manifestation, with possible corneal ulcer, bacterial superinfection and corneal perforation. We report two cases of acute keratitis occurring during the eruptive phase of measles in tw

Immunoglobulins and virus antibody titers: of past needs, current requirements, and future options.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulins (Igs) have been in clinical use for almost 70 years, and early on were also used in conjunction with exposure to the measles virus or polio virus. The US regulations that describe functional Ig lot release thus require the demonstration of minimum antibody titers against these two viruses, although the use of vaccines has now dramatically reduced their incidence. The lower clinical importance of these viruses raises the question of whether other virus antibodies might be more informative for patients with immunodeficiency. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A literature sur

Morbilliviruses and human disease.

Morbilliviruses are a group of viruses that belong to the family Paramyxoviridae. The most instantly recognizable member is measles virus (MV) and individuals acutely infected with the virus exhibit a wide range of clinical symptoms ranging from a characteristic mild self-limiting infection to death. Canine distemper virus (CDV) and rinderpest virus (RPV) cause a similar but distinctive pathology in dogs and cattle, respectively, and these, alongside experimental MV infection of primates, have been useful models for MV pathogenesis. Traditionally, viruses were identified because a distinctive

Multicentric plasmacytoma in a harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena off the coast of Whidbey Island, Washington State, USA.

Necropsy of a female adult pregnant harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena revealed a multicentric plasmacytoma. The plasmacytoma infiltrated the cranial lung lobes, mediastinal lymph nodes and the spleen. Diagnosis was based on gross, histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies. Histopathology revealed a diffuse proliferation of atypical pleomorphic neoplastic round cells with plasmacytic features. Positive immunohistochemistry with anti-CD79a and anti-CD20 antibody markers and anti-multiple myeloma oncogene 1 (MUM-1) for plasmacytoma confirmed this neoplasm to be of B-cell origin. This is the

Rinderpest: the disease and its impact on humans and animals.

Rinderpest is an ancient plague of cattle and other large ruminants, with descriptions of its effects dating back to Roman times. It is caused by a morbillivirus closely related to human measles virus. Although a very effective vaccine is available, it is heat labile, and logistical and financial problems hamper its delivery to the remote areas of Africa and Asia where enzootic foci remain. Periodic epizootics emerge from these foci and spread into neighboring areas, mainly as a result of uncontrolled livestock movement and trading. This is particularly true during wars or civil disturbances w

The measles virus.

Measles is one of widely spread virus infections that is a major cause of deaths in some tropical areas. The measles virus is a member of the genus of Morbillivirus of the family of Paramyxoviridae. The virions contain six polypeptides, including one glycoprotein; two of them are surface proteins that possess hemagglutinating and hemolytic activities, one of them is polymerase. Replication of the measles virus is similar to that of other Paramyxoviruses. Besides the acute infection for measles virus a persistent infection is characteristic that affects central nervous system and inner organs.

Inhibition of host peripheral blood mononuclear cell proliferation ex vivo by Rinderpest virus.

Rinderpest, or cattle plague, is caused by Rinderpest virus (RPV), which is related most closely to human Measles virus (MV), both being members of the genus Morbillivirus, a group of viruses known to have strong immunosuppressive effects in vitro and in vivo. Here, it was shown that peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from cattle experimentally infected with either wild-type or vaccine strains of RPV impaired the proliferation of PBMCs derived from uninfected animals; however, in contrast to either mild or virulent strains of wild-type virus, the inhibition induced by the vacc

Chronic meningoencephalitis associated with Brucella sp. infection in live-stranded striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba).

A chronic, non-suppurative meningoencephalitis was found in three young striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) during routine neuropathological examination of marine mammals live-stranded on the Scottish coast. In all three dolphins the lesions were associated with the isolation of a Brucella sp. from the brain and with the immunohistochemical detection of brucella antigen. Moreover, antibodies to Brucella spp. were detected in the two dolphins that were subjected to serological examination. Immunohistochemical and serological examinations for morbillivirus antigen and antibodies, respective

Post-mortem findings in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the German North and Baltic Seas.

Between 1991 and 1996, necropsies were performed on 445 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), in various states of preservation, stranded on German coasts or accidentally caught by German fishermen. The animals originated from the North and Baltic Seas, and 133 were considered suitable for histopathological, immunohistochemical and microbiological examination. Most of the lesions in these 133 porpoises were caused by parasites, in particular in the respiratory tract, two-thirds of the animals exhibiting pneumonia associated with the parasites. Pneumonia was considered to be the cause of death

Cerebral endothelial cell infection by measles virus in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: ultrastructural and in situ hybridization evidence.

Infection of vascular endothelium plays a central role in the pathogenesis of acute measles virus infection outside the central nervous system (CNS) but has not been described in the human CNS. An ultrastructural survey was made of blood vessels in five cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) to determine whether or not infection of cerebral vascular endothelium occurred in this persistent fatal CNS disease caused by measles virus. Morbillivirus nucleocapsids were found in a few endothelial cells in three necropsy cases but not in the limited tissue available from two biopsies. In
