Water mite and Vorticella (Sessilida: Vorticellidae) parasitism in mosquito populations of central Iran: implications for biocontrol.

The increasing resistance to insecticides, the limited availability of new insecticides for mosquito control, and the emergence of new disease threats have created an urgent need for alternative tools to manage mosquito vector populations. Mosquito parasites may serve as potential sources for these alternatives. This study aimed to investigate the ectoparasites found on both larval and adult mosquitoes to identify natural biocontrol agents that could help reduce the mosquito population. Mosquitoes were collected in 2019 using dipping and mechanical aspiration methods, human-baited bed net trap

Has Zika Been Forgotten? Findings From Nationwide Survey on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Mosquito Preventive Practices in Malaysia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess knowledge and attitudes toward Zika virus disease (ZVD) as well as mosquito prevention practices in Malaysia at a nationwide level. METHODS: Computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) were conducted between June 2019 and February 2020. RESULTS: There are gaps in knowledge about the symptoms, mode of transmission, and risk of microcephaly. The mean for the Zika-related knowledge score was 5.9 (SD ± 4.4) out of a possible score of 14. The majority perceived little or no risk of getting ZVD (75.0%) and 75.5% were a little or not at all worried ab

Insecticide-treated eave nets and window screens for malaria control in Chalinze district, Tanzania: a study protocol for a household randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have contributed to the reduction of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. However, they rely on daily user behaviour and high coverage which is difficult to maintain. Also, insecticide resistance among malaria vector mosquitoes is contributing to reduced efficacy of control tools. To overcome these problems, we propose to evaluate a new tool for house modification, the insecticide-treated eave nets (ITENs) in combination with insecticide-treated window screens (ITWS) incorporated with dual active ingredient (dual AI) for the con

Decline of Malaria Incidence in Three Villages of Thar Desert, India: The Impact of Use of Insecticide-Treated Nets.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is the most important tropical and parasitic disease in the world. Endophagy of many malaria vectors advocates that impeding their entry into houses and preventing their contact with the occupants from infective bites could protect them against malaria. METHODS: The study was carried out in Jaisalmer District, India and three villages were selected as test villages and three as control. Cross-sectional malaria prevalence surveys and mosquito collections were conducted in all the study villages. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were tied below the beds for personal protectio

Sustainable manufacture of insect repellents derived from Nepeta cataria.

Malaria devastates sub-Saharan Africa; the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 212 million people contract malaria annually and that the plasmodium virus will kill 419 000 in 2017. The disease affects rural populations who have the least economic means to fight it. Impregnated mosquito nets have reduced the mortality rate but the Anopheles mosquitoes are changing their feeding patterns and have become more active at dusk and early morning rather than after 22h00 as an adaptation to the nets. Everyone is susceptible to the Anopheles at these times but infants and pregnant women are t

[Sunscreens for UV protection and repellants--who needs what?].

If UV injury of the skin is to be avoided, sun protection by clothing and sunscreen according to the skin type must be employed. Protection against insect stings and bites is provided not only by clothing and mosquito nets but also by suitable repellants, which will depend on the place visited and the user's age.

Bites before and after bedtime can carry a high risk of human malaria infection.

BACKGROUND: Understanding biting distribution of potentially infectious (parous) mosquitoes at various hours of the night would be useful in establishing the likely impact of bed nets on malaria transmission. Bed nets are highly effective at preventing biting by older malaria vectors, which occurs when most people are in bed. However, this behaviour is likely to vary across ecological settings and among mosquito populations. METHODS: Field experiments were conducted in Minepa village within Kilombero Valley. Two outdoor catching stations located approximately 50 m from each other were establi

Knowledge, beliefs, and practices in relation to malaria transmission and vector control in Guatemala.

As part of an effort to involve community members in malaria control activities, we studied knowledge, beliefs, and practices of residents of both the Pacific coastal plain and northeastern Guatemala related to malaria transmission and Anopheles albimanus control. Most residents recognized the role of mosquitoes in malaria transmission, but few knew how mosquitoes acquired their infections or understood the risk of having an untreated person in their midst. If this were more widely known, residents might put greater pressure on infected patients to seek timely and appropriate antimalarial trea

A systematic, realist review of zooprophylaxis for malaria control.

BACKGROUND: Integrated vector management (IVM) is recommended as a sustainable approach to malaria control. IVM consists of combining vector control methods based on scientific evidence to maximize efficacy and cost-effectiveness while minimizing negative impacts, such as insecticide resistance and environmental damage. Zooprophylaxis has been identified as a possible component of IVM as livestock may draw mosquitoes away from humans, decreasing human-vector contact and malaria transmission. It is possible, however, that livestock may actually draw mosquitoes to humans, increasing malaria tran

The experimental hut efficacy of next-generation insecticide-treated nets against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors after 12, 24 and 36 months of household use in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Cluster-randomized controlled trials (cluster-RCTs) have demonstrated variation in the epidemiological efficacy of different next-generation insecticide-treated net (ITN) types, with some providing shorter-lived impact than others. Further studies are needed to assess changes in the insecticidal durability of these ITNs over time to complement cluster-RCT results. METHODS: A series of experimental hut trials were performed to evaluate the bioefficacy of new and field-aged next-generation ITNs (PermaNet® 3.0, Royal Guard®, Interceptor® G2) compared to a pyrethroid-only net (Interce

Genetic Surveillance Reveals Differential Evolutionary Dynamic of Anopheles gambiae Under Contrasting Insecticidal Tools Used in Malaria Control.

Malaria, a febrile disease caused by the Plasmodium parasites and transmitted by mosquitoes, is a leading cause of mortality in children under 5 in endemic countries. The widespread deployment of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) has significantly reduced malaria transmission, but rising levels of insecticide resistance threaten to halt the progress. Monitoring insecticide resistance is vital for effective vector control, particularly when deploying new tools. Understanding mosquito population responses to these interventions is crucial for guiding control programmes in making informed decis

Risk factors for malaria among children under five living in net-owning households in Mozambique from the 2022-3 Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Children under 5 (CU5) in Mozambique are highly susceptible to malaria. Few studies focus on household-level mosquito net use using 2022-3 national survey data (n = 1924). This study analyzed household mosquito net use as a predictor of CU5 malaria positivity. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional multivariable logistic regression including households with ≥1 CU5 (one record per household). The outcome was household-level CU5 malaria positivity, defined as ≥1 rapid diagnostic test-positive CU5. Variables included household mosquito net use, CU5 net use, wealth index, and region. RES

An Experimental Hut Evaluation of PBO-Based and Pyrethroid-Only Nets against the Malaria Vector Anopheles funestus Reveals a Loss of Bed Nets Efficacy Associated with GSTe2 Metabolic Resistance.

Growing insecticide resistance in malaria vectors is threatening the effectiveness of insecticide-based interventions, including Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). However, the impact of metabolic resistance on the effectiveness of these tools remains poorly characterized. Using experimental hut trials and genotyping of a glutathione S-transferase resistance marker (L119F-GSTe2), we established that GST-mediated resistance is reducing the efficacy of LLINs against Anopheles funestus. Hut trials performed in Cameroon revealed that Piperonyl butoxide (PBO)-based nets induced a significantly

Identifying suitable methods for evaluating the sterilizing effects of pyriproxyfen on adult malaria vectors: a comparison of the oviposition and ovary dissection methods.

BACKGROUND: Nets containing pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator that sterilizes adult mosquitoes, have become available for malaria control. Suitable methods for investigating vector susceptibility to pyriproxyfen and evaluating its efficacy on nets need to be identified. The sterilizing effects of pyriproxyfen on adult malaria vectors can be assessed by measuring oviposition or by dissecting mosquito ovaries to determine damage by pyriproxyfen (ovary dissection). METHOD: Laboratory bioassays were performed to compare the oviposition and ovary dissection methods for monitoring susceptibi

Factors influencing consistent use of bed nets for the control of malaria among children under 5 years in Soroti District, North Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The use of insecticide-treated bed nets has been proven to be effective in reducing malaria transmission in highly endemic areas. Use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has been embraced by many malaria endemic countries. LLINs are up to 95% effective in inhibiting blood feeding, when used consistently even after 7 years. The challenge, however, is enhancing their consistent use, especially by the most vulnerable groups (children under 5 years and pregnant women). The study established factors associated with consistent use of bed nets for malaria control among children unde

Seasonal vector density and disease incidence patterns of malaria in an area of Zimbabwe.

Anopheline mosquitoes were studied in an area of Zimbabwe to correlate their population densities with seasonality in malaria incidence. Four trapping methods were employed for adult mosquitoes: pit traps, outdoor and indoor man-baited nets and a sheep-baited net. Anopheles funestus exhibited two population peaks during the year, one in March and the other in September/October. The following over-all proportions of the An. gambiae complex were recorded: An. gambiae Giles (2.5%), An. arabiensis Patton (14.3%) and An. guadriannulatus Theobald (83.2%). Peak populations were observed in March, wit

The influence of feeding behaviour and temperature on the capacity of mosquitoes to transmit malaria.

Insecticide-treated bed nets reduce malaria transmission by limiting contact between mosquito vectors and human hosts when mosquitoes feed during the night. However, malaria vectors can also feed in the early evening and in the morning when people are not protected. Here, we explored how the timing of blood feeding interacts with environmental temperature to influence the capacity of Anopheles mosquitoes to transmit the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. In laboratory experiments, we found no effect of biting time itself on the proportion of mosquitoes that became infectious (vector

Exposing Anopheles mosquitoes to antimalarials blocks Plasmodium parasite transmission.

Bites of Anopheles mosquitoes transmit Plasmodium falciparum parasites that cause malaria, which kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. Since the turn of this century, efforts to prevent the transmission of these parasites via the mass distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets have been extremely successful, and have led to an unprecedented reduction in deaths from malaria1. However, resistance to insecticides has become widespread in Anopheles populations2-4, which has led to the threat of a global resurgence of malaria and makes the generation of effective tools for controlling
