Motion perception in preterm children: role of prematurity and brain damage.

We tested 26 school-aged children born preterm at a gestational age below 34 weeks, 13 with and 13 without periventricular brain damage, with four different visual stimuli assessing perception of pure global motion (optic flow), with some form information (segregated translational motion) and form-defined static stimuli. Results were compared with a group of age-matched healthy term-born controls. Preterm children with brain damage showed significantly lower sensitivities relative to full-term controls in all four tests, whereas those without brain damage were significantly worse than controls

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of human MT+ reduces apparent motion perception.

We investigated the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the human cerebral cortex on apparent motion perception. Previous studies have shown that human extrastriate visual area MT+ (V5) processes not only real but also apparent motion. However, the functional relevance of MT+ on long-range apparent motion perception remains unclear. Here, we show direct evidence for the involvement of MT+ in apparent motion perception using rTMS, which is known to temporarily inhibit a localized region in the cerebral cortex. The results showed that apparent motion perception de

Distinct mechanisms of form-from-motion perception in human extrastriate cortex.

The exquisite sensitivity of the human visual system to form-from-motion (FfM) cues is well documented. However, identifying the neural correlates of this sensitivity has proven difficult, particularly determining the respective contributions of different motion areas in extrastriate visual cortex. Here we measured visual FfM perception and more elementary visual motion (VM) perception in a group of 32 patients suffering from acute posterior brain damage, and performed MRI-based lesion analysis. Our results suggest that severe FfM perception deficits without an associated deficit of VM percept

Night driving: effects of glare from vehicle headlights on motion perception.

Elderly drivers often experience disability glare at night from the headlights of oncoming vehicles. To assess the effect of glare from vehicle headlights on visual performance for seeing moving targets, experiments were performed at night on a dimly lit road with observers seated in a stationary motor car viewing a computer-generated stimulus display at a distance of 23 m (the stopping distance for 50 kph). The display was set 2 m to the side of a second stationary car whose position on the road was that of an oncoming vehicle with respect to the observer. The headlights of the observer's car

Resolving motion-position conflict: dorsal-ventral interactions during illusory jitter perception.

Motion-induced spatial conflict occurs when an isoluminant boundary moves smoothly near a moving luminance-defined boundary: observers perceive spatial jitter superimposed on the otherwise smooth trajectory, despite the absence of physical jitter. This phenomenon shows that perceived object location can fluctuate even when the retinal trajectory is smooth. Because motion-related and form-related visual information is processed across partially distinct dorsal and ventral visual systems, this phenomenon provides a model for examining cross-stream interactions. However, the cortical mechanisms u

Visual and vestibular motion perception in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD).

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic disorder of perceived unsteadiness. Symptoms can be exacerbated in visually complex stationary or moving environment. Visual dependence and increased motion sensitivity are predictors for PPPD but its pathophysiology remains unknown. We hypothesized an abnormal sensory-perceptual scaling mechanism in PPPD and tested visual- and vestibular perceptional thresholds in 32 patients and 28 age-matched healthy control subjects (HC). All participants showed normal vestibular function tests on quantitative testing. Visual motion coherence thr

Electrophysiological markers of vestibular-mediated self-motion perception - A pilot study.

Peripheral vestibular activation results in multi-level responses, from brainstem-mediated reflexes (e.g. vestibular ocular reflex - VOR) to perception of self-motion. While VOR responses indicate preserved vestibular peripheral and brainstem functioning, there are no automated measures of vestibular perception of self-motion - important since some patients with brain disconnection syndromes manifest a vestibular agnosia (intact VOR but impaired self-motion perception). Electroencephalography ('EEG') - may provide a surrogate marker of vestibular perception of self-motion. A related objective

Validating models of sensory conflict and perception for motion sickness prediction.

The human motion perception system has long been linked to motion sickness through state estimation conflict terms. However, to date, the extent to which available perception models are able to predict motion sickness, or which of the employed perceptual mechanisms are of most relevance to sickness prediction, has not been studied. In this study, the subjective vertical model, the multi-sensory observer model and the probabilistic particle filter model were all validated for their ability to predict motion perception and sickness, across a large set of motion paradigms of varying complexity fr

Ingredients in the Visual Perception of Hypomobile Vocal Fold Motion Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: The clinical determination of vocal fold (VF) hypomobility based on laryngoscopy is subjective. Previous studies point to VF motion anomaly as the most commonly reported factor in the diagnosis of hypomobility. This study tested the hypotheses that VF angular velocities and angular range of motion (ROM) differ between the two VFs in cases of unilateral VF hypomobility. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: Semi-automated analysis of laryngoscopic videos of 18 subjects diagnosed with unilateral VF hypomobility and 13 subjects with normal VF mobility was performed to quantify/compa

Attention modulates neuronal correlates of interhemispheric integration and global motion perception.

In early retinotopic areas of the human visual system, information from the left and right visual hemifields (VHFs) is processed contralaterally in two hemispheres. Despite this segregation, we have the perceptual experience of a unified, coherent, and uninterrupted single visual field. How exactly the visual system integrates information from the two VHFs and achieves this perceptual experience still remains largely unknown. In this study using fMRI, we explored candidate areas that are involved in interhemispheric integration and the perceptual experience of a unified, global motion across V

Sustained motion perception deficit following optic neuritis: Behavioral and cortical evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the recovery process in patients after an acute optic neuritis (ON) attack, comparing static and dynamic visual functions. METHODS: In this prospective controlled study, 21 patients with unilateral, first-ever ON were followed over the course of 1 year. Standard visual tests, visual evoked potentials, and optical coherence tomography were assessed repeatedly. In addition, we developed a novel set of motion perceptual tasks to test dynamic visual deficits. fMRI examinations were performed to study the neuronal correlates for the behavioral findings. RESULTS: Four months a

First and second-order motion perception after focal human brain lesions.

Perception of visual motion includes a first-order mechanism sensitive to luminance changes and a second-order motion mechanism sensitive to contrast changes. We studied neural substrates for these motion types in 142 subjects with visual cortex lesions, 68 normal controls and 28 brain lesion controls. On first-order motion, the visual cortex lesion group performed significantly worse than normal controls overall and in each hemifield, but second-order motion did not differ. Only one individual showed a selective second-order motion deficit. Motion deficits were seen with lesions outside the s

Functional MRI of lateral occipitotemporal cortex during pursuit and motion perception.

We performed functional imaging with a conventional 1.5-T magnetic resonance scanner in 9 normal subjects. We used a gradient-echo technique to examine changes in signal between periods when subjects viewed a stationary black-and-white grating, a moving grating, and when they followed a moving spot. We located image pixels with significant differences between the viewing conditions. In 7 subjects, these occurred in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex, a region previously identified as a putative human homologue of the motion-sensitive middle temporal area (MT, or V5) of monkeys. Signal intensi

Orientation perception, motion sickness and vertigo: beyond the sensory conflict approach.

Current theoretical issues central to the understanding of pathological disorientation (vertigo) are addressed through a critical review of research into perceptual disorientation in healthy subjects (motion sickness). Investigations inspired by the 'sensory conflict' model of orientation perception typically paid insufficient attention to higher-order meaningful properties of the environment, purposive activity, and individual differences in sensorimotor experience and skill. These factors are incorporated into an alternative 'active perception' approach, which characterizes perception of ori

Stimulation of PPC Affects the Mapping between Motion and Force Signals for Stiffness Perception But Not Motion Control.

UNLABELLED: How motion and sensory inputs are combined to assess an object's stiffness is still unknown. Here, we provide evidence for the existence of a stiffness estimator in the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We showed previously that delaying force feedback with respect to motion when interacting with an object caused participants to underestimate its stiffness. We found that applying theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the PPC, but not the dorsal premotor cortex, enhances this effect without affecting movement control. We explain this enhancement as an additio

Detecting biological motion signals in human and monkey superior colliculus: a subcortical-cortical pathway for biological motion perception.

Most vertebrates, including humans, are highly adept at detecting and encoding biological motion, even when it is portrayed by just a few point lights attached to the head and major joints. However, the function of subcortical regions in biological motion perception has been scarcely explored. Here, we investigate the role of the superior colliculus in local biological motion processing. Using high-field (3 T) and ultra-high-field (7 T) functional magnetic resonance imaging, we record the neural responses of the superior colliculus to scrambled point-light walkers (with local kinematics retain

Effects of proposed preflight adaptation training on eye movements, self-motion perception, and motion sickness: a progress report.

A program has been initiated to develop apparatus and procedures to preadapt astronauts to the sensory rearrangement associated with weightlessness in spaceflight. If space motion sickness is a consequence of adaptation to that sensory rearrangement, preflight training could afford astronauts significant relief from the motion sickness. The preflight adaptation trainer (PAT) was designed to produce rearranged relationships between visual and otolith signals analogous to those experienced in space. Investigations have been undertaken with three prototype trainers. The results indicated that exp

Using Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation to Null and Enhance Real-World Motion Perception.

INTRODUCTION: Directional galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) influences the vestibular neural firing rate to provide sensations of yaw, pitch, or roll in the absence of real motion. However, there is also great interest in using GVS to actively modulate motion perception during physical movement in dynamic, real-world contexts. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of GVS in either nulling or enhancing full-body yaw and pitch perceptions of a subject seated upright in a rotating chair. METHODS: Using a randomized, counter-balanced design, 20 subjects completed yaw-righ

The effects of spatial relations and motion information in social scene perception.

A body of research shows that the human visual system hosts a network specialized in processing social interactions-i.e., physical/communicative exchanges between people. This network largely overlaps with regions involved in motion perception. Current views propose that, since motion is an intrinsic component of social interaction, it is necessary to trigger social-interaction selectivity. However, the relationship between social-interaction perception and motion perception remains unclear. We took advantage of two existing functional MRI datasets collected in the same participants, to identi

Evaluation of motion perception and binocular vision following dichoptic treatment for amblyopia.

Although poor monocular visual acuity is the main characteristic of amblyopia, binocular vision is also often disrupted in amblyopia. Motion perception deficits have also been reported to be impaired in both amblyopic and fellow eyes. Occlusion therapy, the gold-standard treatment for amblyopia, is usually unsuccessful at fully restoring binocular visual function or motion perception. We evaluated the effectiveness of a video game-based dichoptic treatment (Vivid Vision) for restoring these aspects of vision in amblyopia. Twenty-one participants (age 6 to 56 years) with strabismic, anisometrop
