Cholinergic system in sleep regulation of emotion and motivation.

Sleep profoundly regulates our emotional and motivational state of mind. Human brain imaging and animal model studies are providing initial insights on the underlying neural mechanisms. Here, we focus on the brain cholinergic system, including cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain, ventral striatum, habenula, and brain stem. Although much is learned about cholinergic regulations of emotion and motivation, less is known on their interactions with sleep. Specifically, we present an anatomical framework that highlights cholinergic signaling in the integrated reward-arousal/sleep circuitry, a

Exploring weight control as motivation for illicit stimulant use.

OBJECTIVE: Research has highlighted a growing trend among young, adult women to initiate drug use for weight loss. With known suppressive effects on appetite, illicit stimulants (i.e., cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy) may be particularly attractive to college women, who are at elevated risk for increased body dissatisfaction and experimenting with extreme weight loss techniques. The current study examines the association between risk factors and symptomatology of eating disorders and illicit stimulant use (ISU). METHODS: A preliminary study was conducted on a nonclinical sa

Microbes, molecular mimicry and molecules of mood and motivation.

The hypothesis proposed is that functional disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome and anorexia nervosa are caused by auto-antibodies to neuronal proteins induced by molecular mimicry with microbial antigens. The age incidence of these conditions, the marked female excess, increase with economic and technological advance, precipitation by infection, and the paucity of histological changes are all consistent with the hypothesis. It can be tested directly using human sera to search for cross reaction with brain proteins in model systems such as Drosophila melanogast

Donor motivation in Xi'an, China: comparison with Canadian donors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In China, paid donation is prohibited by law. There is little literature assessing donor motivation in China, and comparison with western countries such as Canada is important in understanding the application of Western literature. We compared motivational factors in donors from the city of Xi'an, China, with Canadian donors matched for age, sex and donation status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 218 donors in Xi'an completed an interview about motivation as did 218 Canadian donors matched for age, sex and donation status. Frequencies and percentages of responses

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for stereotypic and repetitive behavior.

This study provides evidence for intrinsic and extrinsic motivators for stereotypical and repetitive behavior in children with autism and intellectual disability and children with intellectual disability alone. We modified the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) (1988b); dividing it into intrinsic and extrinsic measures and adding items to assess anxiety as an intrinsic motivator. Rasch analysis of data from 279 MASs (74 children) revealed that the items formed two unidimensional scales. Anxiety was a more likely intrinsic motivator than sensory seeking for children with dual diagnoses; the reve

[Influence of motivation and clinical outcome in eating disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to assess if the degree of motivation at the beginning of the treatment for eating disorders (ED) might have an influence on the clinical outcome at one year of follow-up. METHODS: 102 patients diagnosed of ED, following ED DSM-IV criteria, who initiated treatment at the hospital eating disorders unit, were included in the study. All the patients were examined with the structured interview SCID-I and numerous clinical and demographic variables were recorded. Before beginning eating disorders treatment, patients completed one questionnaire that assessed attitudes towa

New age eunuchs: motivation and rationale for voluntary castration.

We used a survey posted on the Internet to explore the motivation of men who are interested in being castrated. Out of 134 respondents, 23 (17%) reported already having been castrated. The 104 (78%) individuals who said they had not been castrated were asked why they wanted to be castrated and why they had not actualized that desire. They were given multiple-choice answers to select from. The major reason (selected by 40% of respondents) for desiring castration was to achieve a "eunuch calm" and freedom from sexual urges; however, a large proportion (approximately 30%) of respondents found fan

Athymhormia and disorders of motivation in Basal Ganglia disease.

The author proposes a general model of human motivation as a separate function at the interface between emotion and action, which can be ascribed to subcortical circuits that are mainly centered on a subset of the basal ganglia and on their limbic connections. It is argued that the long-standing historical understatement of the notion of motivation in neurology is not only due to the complexity of the issue, which has proven hard to disentangle from other domains of dysfunction, but also to the persistence of some misleading conceptual orientations in the way neurologists have considered the b

Relationship of sexual abuse to motivation for strenuous exercise.

AIM: Sources of motivation for intense physical exercise are poorly understood. Based on views that link such behaviour to preexisting psychopathology, we tested the hypotheses that history of childhood sexual abuse would be greater in intense exercisers than in non-exercisers, and that effects of abuse on self-esteem, perfectionism and body dissatisfaction would help to explain any link between abuse and exercise. METHODS: Consecutive attenders at two types of exercise were recruited: weight training and running. Sedentary attenders at a further education college provided a third, comparison

[Loss of motivation and frontal dysfunctions in old patients].

UNLABELLED: Loss of motivation and frontal dysfunction are frequent in old people. Motivation refers to what drives acts and relationships. The loss of motivation has some spécific characteristics from depression: loss of sens of meaning, loss of commitment for others, disinterest for daily activities. The frontal function is related to speed of acting, emotional system, anticipating of the future. All these points are altered in demotivated patients. For these reasons we assayed to analyse the possible links between loss of motivation and frontal dysfunctions. METHODS: The focus of this assa

The healthy volunteer in clinical pharmacology: personality and motivation.

The aim of the present study was to quantify the personality structure and motivation of medical students, who are often the most readily available source of healthy volunteers, since it has long been known that the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs can be substantially modified by predominant personality traits (e.g. neuroticism, extraversion). Over the course of 4 years, a total of 337 subjects (165 males, 172 females) out of the 496 medical students asked, participated in the study after appropriate instruction. Students were tested using the Motivation Q-Sort method which, by

Motives matter: A smartphone EMA study on the association between motives to exercise, exercise engagement and mood.

OBJECTIVE: Regular exercise is vital for preventing cardiovascular disease, maintaining a healthy body weight and supporting mental well-being, yet most people exercise insufficiently often due to motivational barriers. DESIGN: This study examined two types of exercise motive-functional (divided into health/fitness and enjoyment) and appearance-and their interplay with mood and exercise engagement in daily life. Two hypotheses were tested: (H1) functional motives, compared to appearance motive, predict greater exercise engagement, and (H2) higher (more positive) mood, in interaction with exer

Competing Motivations: Proactive Response Inhibition Toward Addiction-Related Stimuli in Quitting-Motivated Individuals.

We examined whether addiction-related cues impact proactive inhibition (the restraint of actions in preparation for stopping) in individuals who are motivated to quit gambling or cannabis use. In Study 1, treatment-seeking individuals with cannabis use disorder and matched controls performed a stop-signal task that required them to inhibit categorizing cannabis or neutral pictures, and within varying levels of stop-signal probability. In Study 2, two groups of individuals, who applied to a voluntary self-exclusion program toward gambling, performed the stop-task following relaxation or gamblin

Measuring motivations for intercollegiate athlete alcohol use: a confirmatory factor analysis of the drinking motives measure.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Drinking Motives Measure (DMM) on a sample of 227 collegiate athletes. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the 4-factor structure of the DMM provided a better fit than either 2- or 1-factor models, but the overall fit of the 4-factor model was moderate at best. A revised 3-factor model consistent with prior research (M. L. Cooper, M. Russell, J. B. Skinner, & M. Windle, 1992) provided the best fit. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that the 3 DMM factors included in the revised model accounted for 17%-21% of the u

Sex-linked loss of motivation to eat by morphine.

Decreased food intake and poor nutritional status are key clinical features of substance use disorders (SUD). Recent evidence suggests a sex-linked role for the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system in the effects of substances of abuse. However, CRF role in substance-induced impairment of eating behaviour is poorly understood. CRF signalling is transmitted by two receptor types, named CRF1 and CRF2. The present studies examined the influence of sex and the role for the CRF1 receptor in opiate-induced loss of motivation to eat. For this purpose, female and male mice were trained to acqui

Extended amygdala orchestrates social motivation in socially isolated mice.

Juveniles deprived of social contact for an extended period of time demonstrate a broad range of adverse effects on behavior, including increased social aversion. Employing our recently developed integrative assay to assess social aversion, we discovered that social isolation is sufficient to induce decreases in social motivation and increases in social fear and hesitancy. Unsupervised behavioral analyses revealed that social aversion in isolated mice is largely driven by an inflexible, anxiety-like state marked by heightened social vigilance. Using intersectional, projection-specific neural c

Trait motivation is associated with fusiform face area morphometry.

Trait motivation is fundamental in shaping human behaviors. Previous studies have primarily focused on their impact on affective and motivational processing, with their role in perceptual processes less investigated. The present study takes face perception, a crucial and well-studied perceptual process, as a representative specimen to examine the perceptual effect of trait motivation. We investigated whether the behavioral activation system (BAS) and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) were associated with structural characteristics of the inferior temporal face-selective regions as well as
