Meningioma arises from arachnoid cap cells and is a common intracranial neoplasm; however, primary extracranial meningioma is rare, accounting for only 1%-2% of cases and is therefore frequently misdiagnosed. We report a case of primary extracranial meningioma arising in the temporal region without intracranial or dural involvement. A 66-year-old woman presented with a slowly enlarging mass in the left temporal region for approximately 10 years, without pain or limitation of mouth opening. Computed tomography revealed a 2.1× 2.7× 4.6 cm mass between the temporalis muscle and the skull, with no

The authors describe the incidence and mortality rates of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related female cancers in Umbria (Italy) in the pre-vaccination period from 1978-2008. Joinpoint regression was applied on age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates to evaluate temporal trends. Mouth and pharynx cancers incidence and mortality trends decreased about three percent per year. For anus and anal canal cancer, incidence and mortality trends presented a non-significant decrease. For malignant neoplasm of vulva, a significant change was found in incidence trend: the annual percentage change decreased

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) serves as an interdisciplinary disease involved in dermatology and stomatology in many cases. The purpose of this study was to analyze the scientometric characteristics and research trends of DLE.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the papers on DLE were comprehensively retrieved from the Scopus database. Discipline comparison (dermatology versus others) and chronological comparison (before 2005 versus 2005-2024) were performed, so that the number of papers can be to some extent compared in the analysis.
RESULTS: Among all the 1239 papers on DLE,

Odontomas are the commonly occurring benign tumors of the jaw, which are odontogenic in origin. Lesion originates as the dental components are laid down in a disorganized manner, due to failure of normal morphodifferentiation. They are considered as hamartomatous developmental malformations rather than a true neoplasm. Mostly, these asymptomatic lesions are discovered as an incidental finding. Large odontomas may give rise to local disturbances, such as eruption delay of permanent teeth, asymmetric tooth eruption, malpositioning, displacement, resorption, or occasional devitalization of adjace

Osteoma is a slow-growing, benign and uncommon neoplasm located primarily in the region of the maxillofacial skeleton. An extraskeletal soft-tissue osteoma is exceedingly rare. Here, we report a case of soft-tissue osteoma occurring in the pterygomandibular space in a 66-year-old woman. The patient complained of a hard mass superior to the left posterior teeth. Clinical examination did not reveal any extraoral swelling, facial asymmetry or difficulty in mouth opening, and the regional lymph nodes were non-palpable. CT images revealed well-circumscribed dense, radiopaque masses located between

We report on five cases of this myasthenic disorder associated with a loss of deep tendon reflexes, dry mouth and impotence. The diagnosis relies upon the response to repeated electric stimulations: with stimulations at a frequency of 5 Hz, the size of the potentials decreases by more than 30 p. 100 and, at 30 Hz, increases by more than 60 p. 100. This profile differentiates Lambert-Eaton syndrome from myasthenia gravis. Lambert-Eaton syndrome occurs usually in the course of malignant diseases; when it seems isolated, a visceral neoplasm, mainly bronchogenic carcinoma, should be suspected. Nev

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon tumour that represents 5%-10% of salivary gland tumours and 1% of all head and neck malignancies. It is characterised by a protracted clinical course with late metastasis and poor long-term prognosis. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman presenting with pulmonary and pleural metastases, on the background of ACC of the floor of mouth, which had been treated 4 years ago with surgical excision and radiotherapy. Cytological evaluation of the pleural effusion showed exfoliated ACC tumour cells. Despite palliative chemotherapy, the patient developed

Maxillofacial defects can result from trauma, treatment of neoplasm, or congenital malformations. Many a time due to the size, location of the defect, or because of the patient's medical condition, surgical reconstruction may not be possible. In these cases, rehabilitation is indicated with the help of a maxillofacial prosthesis. Orofacial digital syndrome (OFDS) is a congenital anomaly that affects the development of the mouth, face, and digits. Such abnormalities or defects compromise form, function, esthetics, and social acceptance and deeply affect the psychological status of an individual

The aim of this article is to describe the first report of a "pull-through" submental approach for excision of a tongue tumor, performed by Giorgio Regnoli in 1838 on a 14-year-old girl affected by a huge swelling of the tongue, which obstructed the upper airway and hindered swallowing and speech. Regnoli made a midline submental incision, divided the mylohyoid muscle and the oral mucosa, and entered the floor of the mouth. The tongue was pulled into the neck through the newly created opening, and the tumor was circumscribed by thread loops to prevent bleeding and was excised. Then the tongue

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. DNA repair mechanisms are impaired, and minimal sun exposure can lead to the development of cutaneous neoplasms in very young patients. Intraoral carcinomas are uncommon and, when present, are located mainly at the tongue tip. We report an unprecedented case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the floor of mouth of a 23-year-old woman with XP. The patient was referred to the oncologist, and 2 months after surgical resection, she underwent a single session of chemotherapy plus

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms derived from the 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare teratoma arising anywhere from the oronasal cavity, regarded as an expanding, avity filling lesion, with a high mortality rate because of severe airway obstruction, especially in the neonatal period and make up only 2% of all teratomas. The authors present a case of an infant girl with a single, finger-like, hairy teratoma arising from the vomer and protruding from the mouth with bilateral complete cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft alveolus. Brachytherapy is a useful addition to external beam irradiation in the treatment of patients with head and neck cancer. Removeable implants are especially important in the treatment of neoplasms of the oral cavity (tongue, floor of mouth, buccal mucosa), orophrynx (tonsil, palate, and base tongue) and nasopharynx (intracavitary boosts). The most commonly used isotope for removable implants is irdium 192. The remote afterloading technique is applicable to both interstitial and intracavitary removable implants. Permanent placement of iodine 125 and palladium 103 radioactive sources may be perfor

Different diseases of the oral mucosa may closely resemble each other and may therefore pose considerable differential diagnostic problems. The most frequent oral mucous membrane disorders are briefly presented according to their main clinical feature. Recurrent aphthous ulcerations have to be differentiated from viral infections causing aphthoid defects. Blisters and erosions are characteristic for erythema multiforme and oral lesions of bullous autoimmune dermatoses. Leucoplakias may be due to exogenous irritant factors, but may also be a symptom of oral disease. Warts and granulomas may sim

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors encompass a heterogeneous group of spindle cell neoplasms, ranging from biologically low-risk lesions to, in rare instances, highly aggressive tumors with malignant potential. Dedifferentiation in solitary fibrous tumors is uncommon and typically occurs in the retroperitoneum, with extrapleural involvement being among the least frequently reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old male presented with a rapidly enlarging mass in the lower jaw of 20 days duration, involving the submandibular triangle and floor of the mouth.
DIAGNOSIS: Histopathological exami

Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) are common cancers of cats. While papillomaviruses (PVs) are an important cause of human OSCCs, there is currently little evidence that PVs cause squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the mouth or other mucosal surfaces in cats. In the present cat, in situ carcinomas developed on the gingiva and nictitating membrane. Neoplastic cells within both cancers contained prominent PV-induced cellular changes consistent with those caused by Felis catus PV3 (FcaPV3), and FcaPV3 DNA was amplified from both cancers. Neoplasms also contained intense nuclear and cytoplasmi

BACKGROUND: Adequate resection of oropharyngeal neoplasms with transoral robotic surgery (TORS) poses multiple challenges, including difficulty with access, inability to palpate the tumor, loss of landmarks, and intraoperative patient positioning with mouth retractor and tongue extended creating significant tissue distortion from preoperative imaging.
METHODS: This study evaluates a workflow integrating intraoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for image-guided TORS through robotic experimentation locating 8-10 embedded targets in five porcine tongues and a cadaveric head phantom, c

Lipomas represent about 1 to 5% of all neoplasms of the oral cavity. Although relatively common, few large series of intraoral lipomas and its variants are seen in the literature. Therefore, the authors present the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features of 46 cases of intraoral lipomas reviewed from the files of the University of Campinas Dental School from 1970 to 2001. Most of the cases affected adults, without gender predilection, and the main involved sites were the buccal mucosa (21 cases), tongue (six cases), lips (six cases) and floor of mouth (five cases). The histolog

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are extremely rare neoplasms with a variable natural history and biologic behavior, ranging from completely benign to malignant tumors with fatal outcome. They have no common identifiable cause, although some authors have assumed that any inflammatory stimulus may cause these pseudotumors. They are most commonly found in the lungs. Extrapulmonary sites include abdomen, retroperitoneum and extremities. IMTs rarely affect the head and neck, but the most common subsites in this region include the orbit, larynx, mouth, tonsils, parapharyngeal space, thyro
