Effects of an antiseptic mouthwash on odorigenic microbes in the human gingival crevice.

Odorigenic gram-negative anaerobes in human gingival crevices were significantly decreased for up to 120 minutes after rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash. This observation parallels clinical measurements of the antiseptic effect on oral malodor and suggests that its odor-decreasing properties are related to its antimicrobial action in the mouth.

The effect of antibacterial mouthwash on blood pressure in humans: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene is a key component of health. Practices for oral hygiene include brushing teeth with toothpaste, flossing, and mouth washing. It has been reported that 36% of United States adults use mouthwash daily. However, antibacterial mouthwashes kill oral nitrate-reducing bacteria, thus impairing nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a key molecule in vasodilation and blood pressure regulation, often acting as a mediator, so there is a potential for antibacterial mouthwashes to cause elevated blood pressure. Therefore, we conducted a scoping review to address the question: Do

Impact of Cetylpyridinium Chloride and Zinc Mouthwash on Oral Health and the Microbiome.

The widespread use of antimicrobial mouthwashes highlights the importance of understanding their impact on both clinical outcomes and the oral microbiome. This literature review seeks to critically evaluate the current academic knowledge regarding the clinical efficacy of mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and zinc lactate in reducing plaque, gingivitis, and oral malodor, with a particular focus on its interactions with the oral microbiome. Clinical trials have validated the efficacy of CPC and zinc lactate in enhancing oral health metrics, although the long-term impact of the

Comparative Evaluation of Efficacy of Herbal and Chlorhexidine Mouthwash on Gingival Health.

INTRODUCTION: Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a chemical mouthwash that has been considered the gold standard, but has its drawbacks. When used for a longer duration, it produces taste alteration and staining on the tooth surfaces. Nowadays, herbal extracts from plants have been widely used as they possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic actions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 45 healthy subjects in the age group of 19-35 years were selected and randomly divided into three groups, Group A - Himalaya complete care mouthwash, Group B - CHX mouthwash, Group C - Distilled water as a contr

Concentration-dependent antimicrobial effects of two mouthwashes on key periodontal pathogens: An in vitro study.

Periodontal diseases, caused by pathogenic dental plaque biofilm, are often treated with chlorhexidine, but its long-term use can lead to undesirable side effects. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of two herbal mouthwashes, Oralife and Ora-T, against periodontal pathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans using the disc diffusion method. Results showed that Oralife exhibited significantly larger zones of inhibition than Ora-T at all tested concentrations. No inhibitory effect was observed at the lowest concentration. Thus, we s

Comparative Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activity of Antiseptics and Commercial Mouthwashes Against Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277.

Background:Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the most prevalent periodontal pathogens, involved in the development of periodontitis, deep caries, pulpitis, endodontic infections, and peri-implantitis. Antiseptics are commonly used in the treatment of oral diseases, but their effectiveness against P. gingivalis remains only partially understood. This preliminary study investigated antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of eight pure antiseptics: boric acid (BA), chlorhexidine (CHX), ethacridine lactate (ET), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), octenidine (OCT), polyhexanide (PHMB), potassium permanganat

The erosive effect of various drinks, foods, stimulants, medications and mouthwashes on human tooth enamel.

Two forms of non-carious dental disorder - erosive tooth hard tissue loss and dental erosion - have been increasingly observed in recent years. Dental erosion is the chemical loss of dental hard substances caused by exposure to acids not derived from oral bacteria. Mechanical forces from, for example, the tongue, the cheeks or toothbrushing, increase loss of partly-demineralized tooth surfaces and the cumulative loss of dental hard tissue is defined as erosive tooth wear (ETW). Dental hard tissue losses which occur because of very frequent acid exposure, such as through increased vomiting, but

Antiseptic mouthwashes as a potential strategy for controlling oral dysbiosis: Antimicrobial effect against opportunistic pathogens.

OBJECTIVES: Oral dysbiosis is increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant condition associated with oral diseases, systemic complications, and the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms. Antiseptic-containing mouthwashes are widely used as adjunctive, non-antibiotic tools in oral hygiene; however, comparative data on their activity against dysbiosis-associated microorganisms and their clinical efficiency at formulation-relevant concentrations remain limited. METHODS: In this study, the antimicrobial activity of commercially available mouthwashes containing octenidine dihydro
