Factorial study of moxibustion in treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

AIM: To identify an appropriate therapeutic regimen for using aconite cake-separated moxibustion to treat diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS). METHODS: A factorial design was employed to examine the two factors of moxibustion frequency and number of cones. The two tested frequencies were three or six moxibustion sessions per week, and the two tested doses were one or two cones per treatment. A total of 166 D-IBS patients were randomly divided into four treatment groups, which included each combination of the examined frequencies and doses. The bilateral Tianshu acupoints (ST

[Effects of mild moxibustion on contents of blood lipoids and serum NO in hyperlipidemia rats].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect mechanisms of mild moxibustion in treatment of hyperlipidemia. METHODS: Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, a moxibustion group, an acupuncture group and a medication group, 12 rats in each group. The hyperlipidemia model was established by intro-gastric administration of fat emulsion for 4 weeks in the later four groups, and 0.9% sodium chloride was given in the normal group. Treatments started when hyperlipidemia model was sullessfully established. No treatment was given in the normal group and the model group. The acupunc

Stroke treatment in rats with tail temperature increase by 40-min moxibustion.

The distant heat induced by suspended moxibustion (SM) for 40 min is confirmed to have a favorable effect in treating diseases such as ischemic brain injury in the clinical setting, but its precise mechanism remains to be explained. Since a similar reaction to the phenomenon of distant heat is found in some transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) rats treated by a 40-min SM session with tail temperature increase (TTI), we hereby study its mechanism by comparing the neuroprotective effect of 40 min's SM with TTI to those without. The experimental results show that 40 min's SM with TT

Moxibustion delays ovarian aging by regulating mitochondrial biogenesis and improving oocyte quality.

BACKGROUND: The growing trend of delayed childbearing in contemporary society has made fertility preservation a significant issue, prompting the search for diverse therapeutic options. Conversely, moxibustion is gaining increasing attention as a potential non-pharmacological therapy for supporting reproductive health. METHODS: Mice aged 2 to 14 months were assessed for ovarian function detection to determine the age of reproductive senescence and to identify the optimal time for moxibustion intervention to delay senescence. Oocyte quality and mitochondrial function assessments were conducted

[Research progress on moxibustion therapy for improving chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression].

Moxibustion therapy is an important traditional non-pharmacological treatment in traditional medicine for improving chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression. By reviewing recent studies on moxibustion intervention for chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression, this article summarized and analyzed the current research status. In clinical studies, moxibustion therapy that tonifies the spleen, nourishes the kidneys, warms yang, and nourishes blood has been verified to be effective for chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression, but the efficacy may vary among individuals receiving differ

Acupuncture and Moxibustion for Prediabetes: Pathophysiological Rationale, Clinical Evidence, and Research Gaps.

Prediabetes, an intermediate metabolic state between normoglycemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus, has emerged as a silent global epidemic with a rising prevalence and substantial cardiometabolic risks. Despite the established diagnostic criteria from major health organizations, significant controversies persist regarding optimal screening definitions, inter-ethnic variability, and low concordance among fasting glucose, HbA1c, and postprandial glucose assessments. Pathophysiologically, prediabetes involves a dynamic interplay between tissue-specific insulin resistance (hepatic in impaired fastin

[LYU Jingshan's experience in treatment of post-stroke depression with acupuncture and moxibustion].

This paper introduces the clinical experience of Professor LYU Jingshan in the treatment of post-stroke depression with acupuncture and moxibustion. Professor LYU Jingshan believes that this disease results from the damage of brain marrow and dysfunction of mind activity, and was manifested as liver qi stagnation and interaction of phlegm and qi. The treatment emphasizes "treating the mind" as the primary approach, addressing the root causes and symptoms, and establishes the therapeutic principle of regulating the mind and controlling qi. In clinical practice, the acupuncture technique for reg

[Acupuncture and moxibustion for rice body bursitis of knee joint: a case report].

This article reports the differentiation and treatment experience of acupuncture and moxibustion for a case of rice body bursitis of knee joint, which could be classified as "crane-knee wind" in TCM. The disease location involves the meridian sinews of the knee region, and is deficiency in origin and excess in symptom. Referencing the classical formula Sishen Jian for crane-knee wind, a staged acupuncture-moxibustion protocol was implemented: at the initial phase (the 1st week), quintuple needling was delivered at local points i.e. bilateral Heding (EX-LE2) and Xuehai (SP10), to regulate the l

Effects of acupuncture versus moxibustion on functional dyspepsia: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, despite its high prevalence and impact on quality of life, effective treatments are limited. Acupuncture and moxibustion, two complementary therapies based on traditional Chinese medicine, have shown potential in alleviating FD symptoms. However, the differences of acupuncture and moxibustion in FD are unclear. METHODS: A total of 144 eligible FD patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the acupuncture or moxibustion group to receive 20 treatment sessions. The primary outcome was the Short-Form Leeds

Clinical research perspective on moxibustion treatment for urinary incontinence: A perspective review.

This study provides an in-depth perspective of moxibustion as a treatment option for urinary incontinence (UI), focusing on its clinical efficacy, underlying mechanisms, and potential integration into standard care practices. Moxibustion, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, involves the targeted application of heat from burning moxa at specific acupoints. Analyzing data from randomized controlled trials and retrospective studies, the study suggests that moxibustion effectively reduces UI symptoms and improves quality of life with minimal adverse effects. The therapeutic benefits are attrib

Effect of Electronic Moxibustion in Patients with IDH: A Randomized Crossover Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH), a common complication of hemodialysis (HD), is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, morbidity, and mortality. Fatigue is one of the most frequent symptoms of IDH, and deteriorates the quality of life of patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of electronic moxibustion for improving IDH and its associated symptoms. METHODS: We prospectively recruited 32 end-stage renal disease patients with IDH who underwent regular HD at our hospital's dialysis center between April 2019 and April 2020.
