[A case of meningeal carcinomatosis due to the ethmoid sinus mucoepidermoid carcinoma].

We report here a 65-year-old man with ptosis, diplopia, and progressive lower limb muscle weakness without nasal symptoms. CA19-9 and CEA were elevated in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen (SCC) was not. CA19-9-positive atypical cells were found in the CSF. A right ethmoidal tumor was discovered by paranasal CT and 18F-Deoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET) studies. The ethmoidal tumor invaded to the orbits and disseminated into the CSF space through the cribriform plate. Biopsy demonstrated that the paranasal tumor consisted of mucoepide

Conjunctival mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a patient with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and a review of the literature.

Invasive mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the conjunctiva of the left lower eyelid was diagnosed in an orbital exenteration specimen of a 57-year-old woman, after a biopsy of the same lesion was originally diagnosed as invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The woman was undergoing mitomycin C injections for ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, diagnosed in the same eye 2 years prior to identification of the neoplasm. The tumor invaded the cornea, sclera, lacrimal gland, regional small nerves, and lymphatics, but did not show intraocular involvement. The original biopsy specimen was reassessed with stains for

Assessment of carcinoma in the sublingual region based on magnetic resonance imaging.

In the present study, we attempted to diagnose and detect the extent of tumors in the sublingual region using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dynamic MRI. MRI with or without gadopentetate dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA)-enhancement in seven lesions of the sublingual regions was performed. The seven lesions included four cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (mucoepidermoid Ca), two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), and one case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Whether the tumor was malignant or benign, as well as the differential diagnosis, could not be determined on the basis of the MR signal

KRAS codon 12 mutations characterize a subset of de novo proliferating "metaplastic" Warthin tumors.

Warthin tumor (WT; synonym: cystadenolymphoma) represents one of the most frequent salivary gland tumors with a frequency equaling or even outnumbering that of pleomorphic adenomas in some series. Histologically, the tumor displays tall columnar oncocytic cells, arranged into two cell-thick layers lining variably cystic glands within an organoid lymphoid stroma. Tumors with exuberant squamous metaplasia in response to FNA-induced or other types of tissue injury/infarction have been referred to as "metaplastic WTs." However, the same terminology was used for tumors with variable mucinous cell a

Unique application of awake tracheoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound in the management of tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea is a rare pediatric malignancy that presents unique challenges in diagnosis, operative management, and surveillance. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a 17-year-old girl with primary tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma presenting in acute respiratory distress due to near-total occlusion of the tracheal airway. An algorithmic approach to preoperative planning was developed to evaluate and remove the tumor endoscopically without compromising oxygenation. After initial palliative resection, endobronchial ultrasound was uniquely applied to evaluate

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the stomach.

A rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the stomach in a 70-year-old man is reported. The protruded mass with central depression resembled a submucosal tumor, located on the posterior wall of a part of the cardia, fornix, and upper corpus. Histologically, submucosal ectopic glands composed of columnar cells, mucus-producing cells that closely resemble gastric epithelium, and ciliated epithelium were observed. The tumor consisted of an admixture of cuboidal, columnar cells, mucus-producing cells, singled or pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, and squamous metaplastic cells. The tumor cells

Low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the subglottis treated with organ-preservation surgery.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the subglottis is infrequently reported in the literature. This tumor subtype is more commonly associated with the major and minor salivary glands. Mucoepidertoid carcinoma of the larynx can be difficult to diagnose, and there is no consensus as to appropriate management. We report a case of a low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma that was confined to the subglottis and treated with organ-preservation surgery. A conservative surgical approach was taken because of the tumor's low-grade histology and its location and in order to preserve the patient's laryngeal function.

Thymic mucoepidermoid carcinomas: a clinicopathologic study of 10 cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary thymic carcinomas are rare malignant neoplasms, of which at least 10 different histologic variants have been described. Among these variants, thymic mucoepidermoid carcinomas morphologically similar to the homonymous salivary gland counterparts are particularly unusual; only 9 cases for which clinicopathologic features were available have been reported. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features of primary thymic mucoepidermoid carcinoma in an effort to better define their histologic features and biologic behavior. DESIGN: The clinical and pathologic features of 1

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate.

Carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma is a rare entity. A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma occurring in the soft palate of a 40-year-old woman is reported. An intraoral excision of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination revealed high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma proliferated in pleomorphic adenoma with free surgical margin. The patient received adjuvant neck radiotherapy. She remains free of disease 16 months post-treatment.

Dyspnea, focal wheeze, and a slow growing endobronchial tumor.

We describe a case of an otherwise healthy woman who presented with nonspecific respiratory symptoms, but was found to have recurrent focal findings on chest radiograph. Her CT scan showed an endobronchial lesion with distal bronchiectasis which was ultimately diagnosed as a mucoepidermoid carcinoma. In this report we discuss the clinical, radiographic, bronchoscopic and pathologic findings of rarely seen endobronchial mucoepidermoid tumors.

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma of Lacrimal Gland: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) is defined as an infiltrative carcinoma arising from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. Ca ex PA with the histologic subtype mucoepidermoid carcinoma is extremely uncommon. Only 2 previous reports in the lacrimal gland have been documented. We reported a 55-year-old lady with a firm, solid, nontender mass in the supralateral quadrant of the right orbit at the area of the lacrimal gland. After wide excision of mass, pathology revealed high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma Ex pleomorphic adenoma. To reduce tumor recurrence 60 Gray radiati

Bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma with recurrent hemoptysis in a pregnant woman: report of a case.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tracheobronchial tree, which is thought to arise from the minor salivary gland tissue of the proximal airway, is an extremely rare neoplasm. We herein report a case of a 31-year-old pregnant woman in her 36th week, who complained of recurrent hemoptysis from bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma. As massive bleeding from the tumor was seen during a caesarean section, it was necessary to add bronchial artery embolization. The tumor was successfully removed by a sleeve resection of the left main bronchus after the embolization. The patient is doing well without any s

Parotid gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma associated with myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. Although most MG cases do not have accompanying malignant disease, patients with thymoma may have an increased risk for secondary malignancy. The reason MG patients are prone to developing cancer is not very well known. Salivary gland tumors account for approximately 3% of head and neck tumors, and approximately 80% of these occur in the parotid gland. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid gland. MG may be associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. We present a patient with MG

Primary bronchial tumors in childhood. A clinicopathologic study of six cases.

A primary bronchial tumor was diagnosed in six children younger than age 12 years. These cases include four bronchial carcinoids, a low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and a granular cell tumor ("myoblastoma"). Lobar or segmental resection was performed in each case and remains the treatment of choice. The most common bronchial tumors in childhood are carcinoids with 17 other evaluable cases in the English Literature. This series includes the youngest child to be reported with bilateral choroidal metastases leading to blindness; in addition, there were clinical manifestations of gigantism and

[Clear cell mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report].

Clear cell variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary glands is rare. A 55-year-old male patient with recently growing left parotid mass underwent superficial parotidectomy. Although the dominant component of the tumor was composed of clear cells, mucin containing cells were also present. Histochemically, alcian blue stain supported intracellular mucin positivity. Immunohistochemically, p63 was positive. Based on the morphological, histochemical and immunohistochemical findings, the case was diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, clear cell variant.

Primacy of surgery in the management of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in children.

BACKGROUND: Epithelial salivary gland neoplasms are rare in children. Malignant tumors account for 30% to 50% of cases in the pediatric age group, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma as the most common histology. METHODS: A retrospective medical record review was conducted from 1953 to 2007 to identify patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the age of 18 years or younger at the time of diagnosis. Forty-nine patients were identified. Their medical records were examined for presentation, treatment, pathologic features, and outcomes. RESULTS: Forty-nine pediatric patients with mucoepidermoid carci

Metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma to the pleura: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm arising from the salivary glands (Ali et al. in J Ayub Med Coll Abbottabad 20(2): 141-2, 2008, Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012). When arising from anatomic sites other than the salivary glands it can be a diagnostic challenge. Primary and metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma from and to the pleura are extremely rare entities that are frequently misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma (Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012).
