Most multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDKs) are discovered prenatally. There is no consensus regarding initial workup and appropriate follow-up. We present a 9-year-old female who was fetally diagnosed with a MCDK and without follow-up returned with an 18-cm multicystic mass. The patient underwent laparoscopic nephrectomy. Final pathology revealed a dermoid cyst arising in a pediatric kidney, which to our knowledge has not been previously described. Patients with MCDK have hypertension as a possible sequela and possible reflux to their functioning kidney. Voiding cystourethrogram seems reasona

Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is one of the most common congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), although its pathophysiology remains unknown. Familial occurrence of MCDK suggests that mutations in genes associated with nephrogenesis are involved in the pathogenesis in at least some cases. Hepatocyte nuclear factor 1β (HNF1β) is a member of the homeodomain-containing super family of transcription factors, and is known to regulate tissue-specific gene expression in a number of organs including the kidneys, pancreas and liver. It has been recently postulated to be

PURPOSE: Most clinicians recommend followup with annual ultrasound for patients with multicystic dysplastic kidney. The aim of this study was to determine whether followup ultrasound provides any clinical benefit.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 73 patients who were diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidney between October 1991 and August 2005. Data were analyzed with respect to patient characteristics and followup information.
RESULTS: We identified 61 patients (43 boys and 18 girls) with adequate followup. A total of 49 patients (80%) were diagnosed pren

To better delineate the natural history of multicystic displastic kidney disease (MCDKD) and provide insights into the pathogenesis of this condition, we report our experience in 102 prenatally detected cases. MCDKD is most commonly an incidental finding on prenatal ultrasound examination. The abnormality may be unilateral (76 per cent) or bilateral (24 per cent). In unilateral cases, abnormality of the contralateral kidney is common (33 per cent). Associated non-renal abnormalities occur frequently with both unilateral (26 per cent) and bilateral (67 per cent) MCDKD, and increase the risk for

The accurate diagnosis of severe congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) and the indications for surgical intervention are a matter of debate. Differential diagnosis from, for example, congenital cystic kidney malformations is important. In the present study we analysed the value of Doppler sonography (DS) for assessment of obstruction in congenital UPJO and its usefulness for differential diagnosis. A total of 138 infants and children were examined. Forty-three healthy infants and 24 children who had had a pyeloplasty at least 1 year previously served as control groups. Seventy-o

AIMS: To evaluate the usefulness of the cyst-to-kidney volume ratio determined by ultrasonography (US) in unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study group included 21 children (average age: 431 days) with unilateral MCDK and 22 children (average age: 440 days) with unilateral grade IV hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction as the control group. All the children underwent transabdominal US. In children with MCDK, we calculated cyst-to-kidney volume ratios (volume of the largest cyst/volume of the MCDK) and in the control group

PURPOSE: Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a congenital urinary tract anomaly affecting approximately 1 in 4300 live births. The impact of unilateral MCDK on children's health during their early years, including conditions like hypertension, malignancy, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and proteinuria, is not well documented. This study aims to analyze and follow up prenatally detected cases of isolated unilateral MCDK to enhance prenatal counseling for parents.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, children diagnosed with unilateral MCDK were followed from prenatal identification throu

Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) increases the risk of major congenital malformations (MCM) in the fetus. AED-related abnormalities include heart and neural tube defects, cleft palate, and urogenital abnormalities. Among the various congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) disease is one of the most severe expressions. Although prenatal ultrasound (US) examination has increased the prenatal diagnosis of MCDK, the pathogenesis is still unclear. We report on four cases of MCDK in infants of epileptic women treated with AEDs

Based on our experience with 13 in utero diagnoses we report the changes that may occur in the ultrasonic appearance of a multicystic dysplastic kidney. Macrocysts appear obvious only in the early third trimester of pregnancy. After reaching a maximum size the cysts start to involute either in utero or after birth, which may lead to a small noncystic mass, the so-called aplastic kidney, or even to complete disappearance of the entire dysplastic kidney. The dysplastic kidney seems vulnerable to anoxia or infection, and necrosis may supervene. The multicystic dysplastic kidney is a progressive a

OBJECTIVE: It is critical to differentiate between a multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) and a kidney with severe hydronephrosis as the treatment varies significantly. We designed a study to compare renal ultrasound (RUS) to nuclear medicine (NM) scan in the diagnosis of MCDK, in order to determine if RUS can be used for the definitive diagnosis of MCKD without use of NM scan.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children with MCDK, who underwent both a RUS and Tc-99m MAG3 or DMSA scan. We planned to calculate the positive predictive value of an RUS diagnosis of MCDK

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (UMCDK) is a congenital anomaly detectable already in utero. The affected kidney is non-functioning. While the ureter is typically absent, UMCDK may rarely associate with mesonephric duct (MND) remnants such as ureterocele or ureteral stump.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency, clinical implications, and management of ipsilateral MND anomalies in children with UMCDK under comprehensive prenatal and postnatal surveillance.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 349 children (0-19 years) with UMCDK, followed by pediatric nephro

BACKGROUND: Women with fetal multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK) are commonly referred for genetic counseling, for which identification of the correct etiology is a prerequisite.
METHODS: A total of 72 women with fetal MCDK at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center were examined via invasive prenatal diagnosis from May 2010 to June 2015. Standard karyotyping analysis was provided to all fetuses, and chromosomal microarray with Affymetrix CytoSan HD arrays was offered to cases whose DNA samples were available.
RESULTS: Abnormal karyotypes were detected in 3 of 72 (4.17%) fetuses. Of

The co-existence of renal and mullerian anomalies is well-recognised. Multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK) are known to be associated with the presence of genital cysts in both males and females, but this is the first report of a prenatally diagnosed MCDK associated with a non-communicating cystic uterine cavity. The management of these abnormalities in childhood is not well-established.

Background: In polycystic kidney diseases, increased periostin levels and disease progression are observed. Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is characterized by kidney atrophy. The aim of the study is to assess serum periostin activity in children with MCDK and in patients with MCDK and involution of cysts. Methods: We enrolled in the study 64 children aged 1-5 years (mean age 25 +/- 9 months). Serum periostin (sPOSTN) levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We divided children into three groups: group A-patients with MCDK and cysts (n = 34); group B-patients with inv

Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney is a developmental disease that results in a lobulated kidney of noncommunicating cysts and abnormal parenchymal tissue. Dysplastic kidneys are usually benign and often involute over time with conservative management. The second most common cause of palpable abdominal mass in a neonate, Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney can cause respiratory distress secondary to extrinsic compression. However, such cases are sparse. Here we present the case of an otherwise healthy term newborn with an exceptionally large MCDK requiring CPAP support and intubation. His respiratory dis

Childhood malignant testicle tumors are very rare. In the literature to date, it has been reported that there are only 24 cavernous hemangioma cases existing in English literature. In this study, we discuss a testicular mass case which was diagnosed as cavernous hemangioma. The patient, who followed for left multicystic dysplastic kidney since his birth, was admitted to our clinic with complaints of left testicular mass and pain at 1-year of age. Histopathological investigation revealed cavernous hemagioma. Even if it has its characteristic ultrasonographic findings, radiology is too far beyon

PK deficiency due to mutations in the PKLR (1q21) gene leads to highly variable clinical presentation ranging from severe fetal anemia to well compensated anemia in adults. We describe dyserythropoiesis in the bone marrow of a child with transfusion dependent anemia and unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) mimicking Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia type I (CDA type I).
