Progression of choroidal atrophy in acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy.

Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy is a non-granulomatous chorioretinitis of uncertain origin that occurs in healthy young adults. The prevailing opinion is that the disease has a good long-term prognosis for visual acuity because it is self-limiting and chorioretinal scars do not enlarge with time. A middle-aged adult male who had acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy in one eye has been followed for 22 years. After apparent clinical healing of the placoid epithelial lesions, widespread severe choroidal atrophy with visual loss occurred and progresse

Successful treatment of tubercular multifocal serpiginous-like choroiditis without use of anti-inflammatory drugs: A case report with multimodal imaging.

PURPOSE: To report the successful management of a case of tuberculosis (TB) related multifocal serpiginous-like choroiditis with anti-TB medications alone. METHODS: A case report with multimodal imaging. RESULTS: A 28-year-old man presented with progressive loss of vision in his left eye. He mentioned a similar history for his right eye about 2 years earlier. Fundus examination showed multiple discrete greyish irregularly bordered lesions in both eyes. Based on a highly positive skin tuberculin test and exclusion of other possible causes, a diagnosis of presumed TB associated multifocal serp

Clinically Suspected Choroidal Lymphoma Arising from Indolent Nonprogressive Multifocal Choroidal Lesions: A Case Report and Literature Review.

PURPOSE: Indolent nonprogressive multifocal choroidal lesions (INMCL) are benign choroidal lymphoid entities characterized by stable, multifocal, non-inflammatory lesions composed of mature B-cell infiltrates. This report describes a case of INMCL with macula lesions and serous retinal detachment (SRD) that was presumed to have transformed into clinically suspected choroidal lymphoma and was successfully treated with external beam radiotherapy. METHODS: Single observational case report. RESULTS: A man in his 60s was found to have unilateral, multifocal yellowish-white choroidal lesions, cons

Real-time and nested polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis - a case report.

BACKGROUND: The term multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis (MSC) has been proposed for the infective variant of serpiginous choroiditis (SC) to distinguish it from typical SC believed to be autoimmune related. The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) in MSC has been studied by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, the use of real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and nested PCR (N-PCR) in MSC has not been reported. This paper aims to highlight the usefulness of PCR in identifying MTb as a causative agent for MSC leading to its correct treatment with anti-tubercular therapy (ATT). FINDINGS:

Differentiation between presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome and multifocal choroiditis with panuveitis based on morphology of photographed fundus lesions and fluorescein angiography.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether inactive cases of presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) and multifocal choroiditis with panuveitis (MFC) can be differentiated from each other by their appearance on fundus photography and fluorescein angiography. METHODS: Two masked observers classified 50 patients' photographs (27 with fluorescein angiograms) as POHS, MFC, or "indeterminate." Twenty-five patients had known POHS and 25 had known MFC. Statistical analysis was performed to assess agreement and interrater reliability. RESULTS: Observer A classified 33 patients and was indeterminate on 17

Multimodality characteristics of multifocal choroid plexus carcinoma with bilateral calvarial defects in a dog.

An 8-year-old male intact miniature poodle presented for blindness, obtundation, tetraparesis, and vestibular signs. Magnetic resonance imaging, radiography, and ultrasound revealed a left piriform lobe lesion, right cerebellar and left brainstem lesions, and hydrocephalus and bilateral calvarial defects. Histopathology confirmed a choroid plexus carcinoma with meningeal and intraventricular metastases. The calvarial defect did not show evidence of necrosis, osteoclastic resorption, inflammation or neoplastic infiltration, reflecting a quiescent calvarial atrophy or dysplasia. These novel find

Multifocal metastases to choroid plexus from papillary thyroid carcinoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus metastases are extremely rare from all types of malignancy, with only 42 cases reported in the literature thus far. Most of these originate from renal cell carcinoma and present as a solitary choroid plexus lesion; only two cases of multifocal choroid plexus metastases have been reported to date. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the third case of multifocal metastases to the choroid plexus, that of a 75-year-old man who developed three measurable choroid plexus lesions approximately 3.5 years after undergoing total thyroidectomy and chemotherapy for papillary thyroi

Regional choroidal blood flow and multifocal electroretinography in experimental glaucoma in rhesus macaques.

PURPOSE: To test a hypothesis of regional variation in the effect of experimental glaucoma on choroidal blood flow (ChBF) and retinal function. METHODS: Five rhesus macaques underwent laser trabecular destruction (LTD) to induce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Intraocular pressures were elevated for 56 to 57 weeks. Multifocal electroretinographic (mfERG) and multifocal visual evoked cortical potential (mfVEP) testing were performed at regular intervals before and during the period of IOP elevation. At euthanasia, the IOP was manometrically controlled at 35 (experimentally glaucomatous ey

JC virus infection of meningeal and choroid plexus cells in patients with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

JC virus (JCV) can cause a lytic infection of oligodendrocytes and astrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) leading to progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). JCV can also infect meningeal and choroid plexus cells causing JCV meningitis (JCVM). Whether JCV also infects meningeal and choroid plexus cells in PML patients and other immunosuppressed individuals with no overt symptoms of meningitis remains unknown. We therefore analyzed archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded brain samples from PML patients, and HIV-seropositive and seronegative control subjects by immunohistoche
