Munchausen syndrome is a psychiatric condition in which individuals feign or induce illness to gain attention, care, and sympathy. Despite being clinically recognized, its biological underpinnings remain largely unexplored, highlighting the need for suitable animal models. Male mice were subjected to social isolation and restraint stress (2 h daily for 7 days) to induce chronic stress. Behavioral changes were assessed using a social interaction test with freely moving or confined juvenile and adult male conspecifics. Anxiety-like behaviors were evaluated by the open field test and elevated plu

BACKGROUND: Munchausen syndrome is frequently observed in men unlike other factitious conditions. The patient presents a characteristic triad: apparently acute but factitious disorders, migration from hospital to hospital resulting in unnecessary explorations and treatments, and fabulated medical history.
CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old man was hospitalized in the psychiatric unit for alleged insomnia, psychomotor excitation and multiple hallucinatory phenomena. The factitious nature of the patientís condition was rapidly suspected in light of the large number of previous unconfirmed medical condi

We report a case of a 29-year-old woman suffering from chronic factitious disorder (FD) with torsion dystonia. For nearly five years, she traveled widely over the country, going from one hospital to another, taking serious medical risk in order to prolong her illness. After several admissions to Rehabilitation Units and multiple explorations, we find convincing evidence for factitious origin and the diagnosis of Munchausen syndrome was evoked. Such a clinical presentation is infrequent in Munchausen's syndrome. Indeed, most often the clinical picture is characterized by acute abdominal pain, f

Factitious disorders are characterized by self-produced symptoms and a chronic course, sometimes with severe complications. Pathomimia occurs more often in women, even though the Munchausen syndrome is found especially in men. Among the various clinical features of pathomimia, the most frequent are factitious fevers and cutaneous pathomimia. Factitious psychiatric disorders are not rare, such as factitious psychotic symptoms, mournings or post-traumatic stress disorders. The main elements of diagnostic orientation are the odd expression of the reported symptoms, a capricious and disconcerting

Munchausen's syndrome is a factitious disorder resulting in unnecessary investigations and operative treatments in a small and well-defined population. Autobiographical falsification is the characteristic of the entity. The case history is presented of a 28-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department with severe pain of acute onset in her fingers and discoloration while washing dishes. She had been diagnosed with Raynaud's phenomenon and had been on antiepileptic drugs. The fingertips of both hands looked cyanotic. Radial and ulnar pulses were intact. She had argued with the personnel

INTRODUCTION: In 1977, Meadow coined the term Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) to describe a situation in which a parent or caregiver fabricates or induces illness in a child, leading to painful diagnostic procedures and hospital treatments. This can result in both short- and long-term psychological and physiological damage, with potentially severe consequences.
METHOD: The aim of this study, beyond summarizing the existing literature, is to explore the underlying personality traits, psychological mechanisms, motives, and dynamics associated with MSBP through two case analyses. These analy

Sodium bicarbonate abuse is unusual, and rarely reported. A patient was extensively investigated at several hospitals for a recurrent hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis; it transpired that she had been abusing sodium bicarbonate for 8 years and had gained hospital admission at will by taking large amounts. She also showed features of the Munchausen syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Medical child abuse (MCA) and factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA) do not describe the same person. MCA is a diagnosis given to a child harmed by unnecessary medical care initiated by a caregiver; FDIA is a psychiatric diagnosis given to the adult who falsifies illness in another. This review summarises the clinical features, diagnosis and management of MCA in children and relates MCA to FDIA and to the British concepts of fabricated or induced illness (FII) and perplexing presentations (PP). Structured narrative review of PubMed, last updated in September 2026, using the

Factitious disorder, formerly known as Munchausen syndrome, is a type of mental illness in which patients fabricate symptoms to gain attention or sympathy. When considering a patient with factitious disorder as a candidate for infusion therapy, the clinician must be aware of the challenges associated with providing an invasive treatment to high-risk patients while promoting safety.

A 15-year-old female suffered from a persistent ulcer which developed in her knee. At the ninth operation, intraarticular knee arthrodesis was performed but the ulcer recurred. The most effective treatment was neither thorough debridement nor a free musculocutaneous flap covering, but the application of a plaster cast. The condition is thought to have been Munchausen syndrome.

Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP), is a psychiatric disorder, a particular form of child abuse. An impaired emotional relationship exists mainly between the mother and her child. According to the variety of victims' symptoms, all medicine doctors may deal with this syndrome in every day clinical practice. Still insufficient knowledge about the syndrome and its' rare consideration in the differential diagnosis result in only severe, potentially lethal cases recognition. For many years the rest remains a source of a long-term physical and mental injuries in victims. About 30 years from the fir

A 71-year-old man who presented to hospital with chest pain and a history of cardiovascular disease was repeatedly hospitalised over the course of a month for care that included multiple investigations, intensive care, transfer to and from a metropolitan hospital, discharge, and readmissions for collapse, hemiparesis, and vision change. The medical team excluded underlying disease related to his initial chest pain and subsequent neurological symptoms. A search for (undisclosed) prior hospitalisations revealed multiple previous admissions and invasive investigations at hospitals across Australi

Sulphonylurea ingestion is life-threatening in toddlers due to its strong and prolonged hypoglycemic effect, and is on the toddlers' "one pill can kill" list. Its administration to children may not be accidental. We discuss a case of non-accidental sulphonylurea ingestion by an 18-month-old girl, and the clinical reasoning process leading to identification of the causative agent for the patient's symptoms. A previously healthy 18 month-old girl presented to the Emergency Department with altered mental status and severe hypoglycaemia, which required intravenous hypertonic dextrose solutions to

Münchhausen syndrome by proxy (MBPS), also commonly referred to as Medical Child Abuse (MCA), and now officially classified in the DSM-5-TR as Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIOA), is a severe condition that involves a caregiver who fabricates or induces signs and symptoms of physical, psychiatric, or developmental disorders in a child or other dependent victim. The primary motivation is the achievement of psychological gain—such as attention and sympathy—rather than obvious external benefits. Unfortunately this is frequently observed by health teams in clinics, hospital wards and em

Factitious diseases in which the symptoms are simulated or created intentionally are very varied: functional manifestations, haemorrhages, anaemia, pyrexia, metabolic disturbances (hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia, hyperthyroidism, etc.), skin lesions and others. Different symptomatic associations are possible. The Munchausen syndrome which is mainly seen in anglo-saxon countries, is characterised by a long history of factitious symptoms in subjects with psychological profiles which are difficult to define because of the very behaviour of the patients themselves. Besides this syndrome, many psychol

UNLABELLED: Munchausen syndrome is known as a factitious disorder imposed on the self. Factitious Cushing's syndrome (CS) is a very rare form of Munchausen syndrome, presenting with varied clinical and biochemical features, making diagnosis challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old female patient who worked as a registered nurse presented with clinical features of CS but denied any exogenous corticosteroid use. The endocrine workup revealed that the patient had a high 24 h urinary-free cortisol collection before admission. Subsequent evaluations showed low levels of morning cortisol and p
