Trichospirura aethiopica n. sp. is described from unidentified tubular structures (pancreatic ducts?) near the stomach of the murid Malacomys longipes Milne-Edwards, 1877 in Gabon. The extremely long and narrow buccal capsule, posterior position of the vulva, unequal spicules and absence of caudal alae readily identified the specimens as belonging to Trichospirura Smith & Chitwood, 1967, but a combination of several characters distinguished them from the described species in this genus. Males of the new species are characterized by the absence of precloacal papillae, the presence of four pairs

Monanema joopi n. sp. is described from blood drawn from the heart of the murid Acomys (Acomys) spinosissimus in South Africa. It is characterised by a non-bulbous cephalic extremity, shared with only one of its five congeners, and a cylindrical tail with caudal alae and a spicular ratio of 2.7 in the male. As is typical for the genus, microfilariae are skin-dwelling. They are 185 to 215 micrometres long and have no refractory granules beneath their sheath. A key to the species of Monanema is presented and an amended generic description, based on the six currently known species, is proposed. S

The first case of cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii in a new species of bandicoot (Bandicota indica) is described. The animal was trapped in a bamboo thicket in a park located in the city of Jabalpur, India. On necropsy, pathological lesions were seen in the lungs and liver and C. neoformans var. grubii was isolated from the lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen and brain but not the heart or intestine. The soil of the animal's burrow and bamboo debris around it also revealed the presence of C. neoformans var. grubii. We hypothesize that the bandicoots may potentially act as

Respiratory infections represent a significant risk for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly during viral outbreaks. This study applied metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in nasopharyngeal swabs from HCWs presenting respiratory symptoms. Samples from 161 HCWs collected at a tertiary hospital in 2020-2021 were screened using FilmArray; negative samples were analyzed by metagenomic sequencing. After removal of human reads, sequences were taxonomically classified into viral, bacterial, and eukaryotic groups, and AMR genes were

This study investigated the occurrence of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in rodents and marsupials from the Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Two hundred and four fecal samples were collected from different forest areas in the municipalities of Ilhéus, Una, Belmonte, and Mascote. Identifications were performed using PCR and nested PCR followed by sequencing of the gdh and tpi genes for G. duodenalis, and the gp60 and Hsp-70 genes for Cryptosporidium. The total frequency of positive PCR samples for both G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. was 5.4% (11/204).

The genus Pneumocystis comprises noncultivable, highly diversified fungal pathogens dwelling in the lungs of mammals. The genus includes numerous host-species-specific species that are able to induce severe pneumonitis, especially in severely immunocompromised hosts. Pneumocystis organisms attach specifically to type-1 epithelial alveolar cells, showing a high level of subtle and efficient adaptation to the alveolar microenvironment. Pneumocystis species show little difference at the light microscopy level but DNA sequences of Pneumocystis from humans, other primates, rodents, rabbits, insecti

Vocalizations are ancient behaviours that require the complex coordination of breath and display. Understanding how laryngeal anatomy shapes vocalization provides insights into this diversity, its mechanisms and their evolution. Rodents are ideal for exploring this variation because of their diverse mechanisms and vocal structures. Here, we describe the laryngeal morphology and sound production mechanisms underlying the vocalizations of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina) and compare these results to those of other vocalizing mammals. We reconstructed the three-dimensional laryngeal mo

BACKGROUND: Kupffer cells are specialized, liver-resident macrophages that play central roles in hepatic homeostasis, immune surveillance and pathogen clearance. While well-studied in laboratory mice and rats, methods for isolating and studying Kupffer cells from non-model species remain scarce, limiting research in ecologically and zoonotically relevant hosts such as the Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis), the natural reservoir of Lassa virus (LASV).
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We developed and validated an optimized Kupffer cell isolation protocol adaptable to non-model

Cognitive and behavioural flexibility can be crucial in determining the success of animals facing fast-changing, altered, or disturbed conditions. Innovative problem-solving is considered a key trait for dealing with human-induced environmental alterations, as it can allow individuals to find solutions to novel problems that threaten their survival or reproduction. However, the link between animal innovation and human-induced habitat alteration is usually examined in urbanised areas, thereby overlooking potential effects of human disturbance in natural areas, where less innovative animals are

The XX/XY sex chromosome system is highly conserved across mammals, with rare exceptions where males lack a Y chromosome. Among these is the genus Tokudaia, a group of spiny rats comprising three species with unique sex chromosome systems deviating from the typical XX/XY pattern. While Tokudaia osimensis and Tokudaia tokunoshimensis have completely lost the Y chromosome, they retain some Y-linked genes on the X chromosome. In contrast, Tokudaia muenninki retains large sex chromosomes where both the X and Y chromosomes have fused with an autosome pair, carrying multi-copied Y-linked genes, incl

This study investigates the adrenal gland structure and gene expression in Acomys cahirinus compared to Mus musculus, aiming to assess its relevance for human adrenal disease modeling. We identified a well-defined zona reticularis in Acomys, resembling the human adrenal cortex. Transcriptomic analysis revealed upregulation of key steroidogenic genes (Cyp17a1, Sult1e1, Hsd3b2, Defb18, Kiss1, H2-Ke6), with validation by qRT-PCR and CAGE-seq. The gene Nupl1 showed discordant results between RNA-seq and CAGE. Pathway analysis highlighted enrichment of steroidogenesis and adrenal metabolism. Notabl

The dynamics of Lassa virus (LASV) infections in rodent reservoirs and their endemic human caseloads remain poorly understood. During the endemic period, human infections are believed to be associated with the seasonal migration of Mastomys natalensis, thought to be the primary reservoir that triggers multiple spillovers of LASV to humans. It has become imperative to improve LASV diagnosis in rodents while updating their prevalence in two regions of Lassa fever endemicity in Nigeria. Rodents (total, 942) were trapped in Ondo (531) and Ebonyi (411) states between October 2018 and April 2020 for

The multimammate mouse, Mastomys natalensis, is the most common rodent pest species in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, rodenticides are the preferred method used to reduce the population of rodent pests, but this method poses direct and indirect risks to humans and other non-target species. Fertility control is a promising alternative that has been argued to be a more sustainable and humane method for controlling rodent pests. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of fertility control bait EP-1 (quinestrol (E) and levonorgestrel (P), 10 ppm) and an anticoagulant rodenticide bait (bromadi

Although many high-risk mucosal and cutaneous human papillomaviruses (HPVs) theoretically have the potential to synthesize L1 isoforms differing in length, previous seroepidemiological studies only focused on the short L1 variants, co-assembling with L2 to infectious virions. Using the multimammate mouse Mastomys coucha as preclinical model, this is the first study demonstrating seroconversion against different L1 isoforms during the natural course of papillomavirus infection. Intriguingly, positivity with the cutaneous MnPV was accompanied by a strong seroresponse against a longer L1 isoform,

The androgen dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has trophic and anti-glucocorticoid actions on brain growth. The adrenal gland of the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) synthesizes DHEA. The aim of this study was to determine whether the brain of this precocial species is also able to produce DHEA de novo during fetal, neonatal and adult life. The expression of P450c17 and cytochrome b5 (Cytb5), the enzyme and accessory protein responsible for the synthesis of DHEA, was determined in fetal, neonatal and adult brains by immunocytochemistry, and P450c17 bioactivity was determined by the conversion of pre

BACKGROUND: Echinostomes are cosmopolitan digenean parasites which infect many different warm-blooded hosts. Their classification is extremely confused; the host spectrum is wide, and morphological similarities often result in misidentification. During our long-term studies on the helminth fauna of rodents and carnivores we have collected 27 collar-spined echinostomes which differ in morphology to an extent that suggests the presence of more than one species. Here, we describe this material, and the extent of host-related variation in this parasite.
METHODS: Specimens of Isthmiophora isolated
