Short communication: Relationship between serum cortisol concentration and defensive behavioral responses of dairy cows exposed to natural infestation by stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans.

The aim of this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of natural infestation by Stomoxys calcitrans on the behavioral and adrenocortical responses of dairy cattle. Twenty Holstein cows randomly selected were individually sprayed with insecticide once every 7d, whereas no insecticide was applied to the other 20 animals. The average number of flies per cow was estimated daily, and the frequency of fly-avoidance behaviors was measured daily; plasma cortisol concentration was measured each morning. No flies were ever counted on the treated cows at any time during the experiment, whereas an av

Genomic evidence for flies as carriers of zoonotic pathogens on dairy farms.

Dairy farms are major reservoirs of zoonotic bacterial pathogens, which harbor antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), and raise critical questions about their dissemination on and off the farm environment. Here, we investigated the role of coprophagous muscid flies (Diptera: Muscidae) as carriers of zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. We collected cow manure and flies on a dairy farm and used shotgun metagenomics to identify the presence of clinically relevant bacteria, virulence factors, and ARGs in both environments. Our results reveal that, although the fly microbiome is largel

Identification of Semiochemicals in the Feces of Stable Flies, Stomoxys calcitrans, that Attract Conspecific Flies.

Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans, are severe blood-feeding pests of cattle. As previously reported, fecal deposits of stable flies attract conspecific flies. Here we report the identification and behavioral testing of fly fecal semiochemicals. In laboratory two-choice bioassays, CO2-activated flies landed more often on sites baited with stable fly feces, or water extract thereof, than on unbaited control sites. Water extracts of feces attracted flies, whereas non-polar solvent extracts did not. Fecal deposits only of blood-fed, but not sugar-fed, flies elicited preferential responses, indicat

Evaluation of mechanical transmission of Anaplasma marginale by Stomoxys calcitrans.

The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical transmission of Anaplasma marginale to cattle by Stomoxys calcitrans. The S. calcitrans were obtained in field condition and their offspring (first generation) were used in this study originating in the laboratory. In method 1 (flies released freely in cattle pens), from D0 to D + 10, approximately 3300 flies fasted for 24 h were released daily per pen with infected and healthy calves. In the second method (feeding chambers for artificial interruption of blood meals), for each negative calf, three chambers were used, each containing

Opportunistic pathogens are prevalent across the culturable exogenous and endogenous microbiota of stable flies captured at a dairy facility.

Stable flies in the genus Stomoxys are highly abundant, blood-feeding pests on dairy farms; however, their role in the carriage and potential transmission of pathogens is largely understudied. Here, we report on the frequency and distribution of culturable bacteria collected from Stomoxys flies captured in free stall barns and nearby calf hutches over a three-month period on a focal research farm in Wisconsin, USA. Mastitis-associated bacterial taxa, including Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Enterobacter, and Klebsiella spp., were frequently isolated from pooled samples of the internal or externa

An attempt to evaluate the spreading of Taenia saginata eggs in the environment.

Taeniid eggs may be transmitted either abi-otically by e.g. sewage disposal, rainfall and water streams or biotically by vectors as her-bivores, birds and insects. Among the insects especially the flies may play an important role as shown in New Zealand by Lawson & Gemmell (1983, 1985). The fly-borne trans-mission may take place over long distances. Lawson & Gemmell (1983) evaluated that the majority of eggs would be deposited within 1.6 km from their point of origin, but some eggs might be spread even longer.

The role of non-biting flies in the transmission of enteric pathogens (Salmonella species and Shigella species) in Beirut, Lebanon.

In the summer and early autumn of 1974, flies were trapped in the Beirut districts of Ashraffiyah, Burj, Burj-Hammoud, Quarantine, the New Slaughter House, Ras Beirut, American University Campus, and the suburbs of Chiyah and Mreyjieh. Musca domestica, Muscina stabulans, Calliphora vicina, Phormia regina, Phaenicia sericata, Sarcophagidae spp. and Fannia canicularis were identified. The rural areas of Mreyjieh and Chiyah had higher densities of Musca domestica while higher densities of Calliphoridae spp. were found in the Slaughter House, Quarantine and Burj-Hammoud districts. Twenty-nine isol

Insects dispersing taeniid eggs: Who and how?

Taeniosis/cysticercosis and echinococcosis are neglected zoonotic helminth infections with high disease burden caused by tapeworms which circulate between definitive and intermediate host reflecting a predator-prey interaction. Taeniid eggs can remain vital for months, allowing arthropods to mechanically transport them to intermediate hosts. However, the multiple routes that arthropods provide as carriers of taeniid eggs are still often unregarded or not considered. This review focuses on the prevalence and importance of arthropods as carriers and spreaders of taeniid eggs in the epidemiology

Myiasis in domestic cats: a global review.

Myiasis is an infestation caused by larvae of Diptera in humans and other vertebrates. In domestic cats, Felis silvestris catus L. (Carnivora: Felidae), four dipteran families have been reported as agents of obligatory and facultative myiasis: Oestridae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae and Muscidae. Among agents of obligatory myiasis, the most frequent genus is Cuterebra Clark (Oestridae) and the most frequent species is Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Calliphoridae). Among the agents of facultative myiasis, the most frequent species is Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Calliphoridae). A survey of m

Preliminary evidence that synanthropic flies contribute to the transmission of trachoma- causing Chlamydia trachomatis in Latin America.

Synanthropic flies have been shown to be important mechanical vectors of Chlamydia trachomatis, which causes trachoma. However entomological studies have not been forthcoming in Latin America. This study assesses the relationship between household dipteran fly densities and active childhood trachoma in a village on Marajó Island, Pará state, Brazil. For 78 households, members were examined for signs of trachoma, relative abundance of potential trachoma vectors (Diptera, Chloropidae and Diptera, Muscidae) was quantified by trap counts, and additional measures of household hygiene associated wit

Geographical Distribution, Biodiversity, and Species Richness of Medically Important Necrophagous Flies in Central Iran.

There have been some investigations carried out about necrophagous flies and their biodiversity indices in Iran. In the present study, the species composition of flies, their richness, and biodiversity were investigated in central Iran. In a cross-sectional study, specimens were collected monthly in three different climate areas of Qom Province. Species diversity, species richness, and species evenness were calculated to estimate the species biodiversity of flies. In total, 7,291 flies were collected and identified using valid identification keys that classified flies into four families and 15

Contrasting consequences of different defence strategies in a natural multihost-parasite system.

Hosts counteract infections using two distinct defence strategies, resistance (reduction in pathogen fitness) and tolerance (limitation of infection damage). These strategies have been minimally investigated in multi-host systems, where they may vary across host species, entailing consequences both for hosts (virulence) and parasites (transmission). Comprehending the interplay among resistance, tolerance, virulence and parasite success is highly relevant for our understanding of the ecology and evolution of infectious and parasitic diseases. Our work investigated the interaction between an ins

Blowfly species composition in sheep myiasis in Scotland.

Samples of dipteran larvae were collected from live sheep throughout Scotland, reared in the laboratory, and identified once adult flies emerged. Lucilia sericata was found in 77% of samples, and other species in 49%. The most common alternative species were L.caesar, which occurred in 31% of samples, and Protophormia terraenovae, which occurred in 18%. Three other calliphorid species, Calliphora vomitoria, C.vicina and L.illustris, and the muscid Muscina pabulorum were also found. The proportion of samples containing alternative species was significantly lower in eastern Scotland than in west

Insects found in birds' nests from Argentina. Pseudoseisura lophotes Reichenbach, 1853 and Anumbius annumbi (Vieillot, 1817) (Aves: Furnariidae), hosts of Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

The insect fauna of the nests of Pseudoseisura lophotes (Reichenbach, 1853) (Aves: Furnariidae) from Argentina was investigated. A total of 110 species (68 identified to species, 22 identified to genus, 20 identified to family) in 40 families of 10 orders of insects was found in these nests. Triatoma platensis Neiva, 1913 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) was found again in nests of P. lophotes, corroborating after 73 years the first observations made by Mazza in 1936. The occurrence of the insects in nests of P. lophotes is compared with the previously known insect fauna in nests of A. annumbi, Furnari

Host-specific associations affect the microbiome of Philornis downsi, an introduced parasite to the Galápagos Islands.

The composition and diversity of bacteria forming the microbiome of parasitic organisms have implications for differential host pathogenicity and host-parasite co-evolutionary interactions. The microbiome of pathogens can therefore have consequences that are relevant for managing disease prevalence and impact on affected hosts. Here, we investigate the microbiome of an invasive parasitic fly Philornis downsi, recently introduced to the Galápagos Islands, where it poses extinction threat to Darwin's finches and other land birds. Larvae infest nests of Darwin's finches and consume blood and tiss
