Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery2018eng
Ocular adnexal smooth muscle masses/neoplasms are extremely rare. Such lesions are comparatively more common in the conjunctiva than in the orbit and are most unusual in the eyelid. A 58-year-old woman slowly developed over 4 months a firm, movable sausage-shaped lesion in the deep lateral half of the right lower eyelid. The lesion ran parallel to and above the orbital rim. At surgery, the lesion was located between the orbicularis muscle and the inferior orbital septum. The term ellipsoid is used descriptively and does not imply any particular biologic behavior. Immunohistochemical evaluation

A patient with polymyalgia rheumatica(PMR)had increasing thrombocytosis. CRP levels, the ESR, and serum interleukin (IL)-6 levels were slightly elevated, and the patient tested negative for RF and anti CCP antibodies. Muscle pain was ameliorated with the administration of corticosteroids. Genetic analysis of the peripheral white blood cells demonstrated the presence of a JAK2V617F mutation. The muscle pain experienced by the patient was considered to be due to essential thrombocythemia( ET)of myeloproliferative neoplasms(MPNs)along with an inflammatory reaction. Unfortunately, the patient died

The perivascular epithelioid cell family of neoplasms in the lung encompass lymphangioleiomyomatosis, angiomyolipoma, angioleiomyoma, and perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa). They share the unique attribute of immunoreactivity for both melanocytic and muscle markers. Some are primary pulmonary neoplasms, while others, such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis, are now thought to represent metastatic, indolent tumors from uterine sites of origin. The clinical and morphologic appearances vary considerably, but a genetic link with tuberous sclerosis complex is a common feature. Considerable advan

AIM: The aim of this study was to present the process of diagnosis and treatment of a patient with diagnosed intramuscular myxoma in the left lower limb.
BACKGROUND: Myxomas are benign neoplasms which can be found within large muscle groups. Histologically, these neoplasms are composed of a few elongated or star-shaped cells lying in abundant mucoid stroma. These tumours are characterized by expanding growth without forming distant metastases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A man, 58, came to the Surgical Oncology Outpatient Clinic due to pain ailments and a growing tumour located in the rear group of th

Focal myositis is an uncommon inflammatory myopathy of unknown cause affecting skeletal muscle. It may be mistaken on clinical evaluation for a malignant neoplasm. We describe two cases, both involving the mylohyoid muscle of the floor of the mouth. In each case excisional biopsy of a firm indurated mass revealed a focal lymphocytic and histiocytic infiltrate associated with degenerating and regenerating skeletal muscle fibers. No clinical or biochemical evidence of generalized muscle disease was seen at presentation or at 1-year and 7-year follow-up examination. The literature on focal myosit

Neoplastic infiltration of the extraocular muscle (EOM) is a rare condition which can pose a diagnostic dilemma due to its rarity and overlapping ultrasonographic features with orbital myositis. The ultrasonographic features of neoplastic enlargement of EOM have not been systematically studied and previously have been described in only a few case reports. Orbital ultrasonography, in conjunction with the pattern of ocular misalignment, was assessed for its potential role in identifying patients with neoplastic EOM enlargement. Retrospective chart review of patients with neoplasm and myositis. T

A 23-month-old, male, Labrador retriever dog with a history of slowly progressive right-sided atrophy of the masticatory muscles was submitted for necropsy. A highly invasive neoplasm which destroyed adjacent soft tissues including the right trigeminal nerve was found in the right side of the cranial cavity. Metastases to the liver were also present. Microscopical features of the neoplasm were compatible with those of rhabdomyosarcoma, embryonal type. This diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical demonstration of desmin and muscle actin within tumour cells. In human patients, rhabdomyosa

AIMS: The CD10 antigen is expressed in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and follicle centre cell lymphoma. A recent study investigating the expression of CD10 in a wide range of non-haematopoietic neoplasms found positive staining in a small number of endometrial stromal sarcomas as well as in normal endometrial stroma. The present study aimed to ascertain whether CD10 positivity is indeed found in normal endometrial stroma and endometrial stromal neoplasms. Staining of a range of tumours which can be confused morphologically with endometrial stromal neoplasms was also undertaken to ascertain whe

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

Myopericytoma is a recently described hemangiopericytoma-like neoplasm with myoid differentiation. These tumors are typically located in the subcutaneous and soft tissues of the extremities. The authors report a rare pleural-based pulmonary myopericytoma in a 58-year-old woman. The lesion was grossly homogeneous and well circumscribed. Microscopically, it was composed of densely packed spindle cells organized as whorls and short interlacing fascicles with a concentric perivascular distribution. Immunohistochemical reactions were positive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin (SMA), muscle-specific

Tumor induced osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by mesenchymal tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Patients complain of progressive bone pain, muscle weakness and brittle fractures. Delayed diagnosis of osteomalacia caused by a tumor is often found in clinical practice. When verifying the exact localization of the neoplasm, radical removal within healthy tissues is recommended. The article considers a clinical example of FGF23 tumor induced osteomalacia with localization of neoplasm in the tympanic cavity.

Leiomyomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate from smooth muscle cells. Leiomyoma of the testis is exceedlingly rare. We present a case demonstrating a 1.3 cm hypoehoic mass of the left testis but with significant enhancement on contrast-enhanced scrotal ultrasonography concerning for a malignant neoplasm in a 33-year-old Hispanic male. However, his final pathology revealed a benign disease, specifically intratesticular leiomyoma. We discuss the role of contrast-enhanced scrotal ultrasound in this disease process.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of various tissues, including components of fat, abnormal blood vessels, and smooth muscle cells. They most commonly occur in the kidney, but on rare occasions they occur in extrarenal sites. We present a case of angiomyolipomas in the mediastinum and lung, possibly associated with lymphangioleiomyomatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex.

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign neoplasms in women, typically driven by mutations in MED12. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with a history of uterine fibroids who underwent a total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Microscopically, the tumor was a benign-appearing spindle cell neoplasm with focal edema, hyaline plaques, and hemorrhage, but lacking high-grade atypia, tumor cell necrosis, or significant mitotic activity. Immunohistochemistry was consistent with a smooth muscle origin (positive for desmin and smooth muscle actin (SMA), negative for CD10). Due to its unusual featu

Primary uveal-tract neoplasms are extremely rare in childhood; the most common lesions found are melanocytic. We report here the case of a 7-year-old girl who underwent enucleation of the right eye with clinical suspicion of choroid melanoma as a result of a ciliary body mass that extended to the posterior chamber. Histologically, the neoplasm featured spindle cell morphology, atypia, and mitoses. The tumor expressed smooth muscle alpha actin, pan-actin HHF-35, and desmin, whereas immunohistochemistry for melanocytic markers, such as S-100, Melan-A, and HMB-45, was negative. Based on these fea

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but can also arise in minor salivary glands. We report a case of a primary epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung. The patient is a 55-year-old black woman who presented with increasing shortness of breath and productive cough of at least 3 months duration. A left lower lobe endobronchial lesion was identified radiographically. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed, obtaining a circumscribed, nonencapsulated 3.9 cm tan mass which was attached

Intramuscular hemangiomas are rare benign vascular neoplasms. IMH accounts for less than 1% of all hemangiomas. These neoplasms commonly occur in trunk and extremities but are rare in head and neck region. The present case is a 17-year-old female patient, who presented with a painless, slowly enlarging mass in left sided upper neck for 4 years. Investigations were suggestive of vascular neoplasm. She underwent excision of the mass in toto under general anesthesia. Postoperative period was uneventful. Histopathological examination of the mass revealed it as mixed type of intramuscular hemangiom

An orbitozygomatic infratemporal approach for the removal of large neoplasms involving the lateral skull base is described. This approach, involves a unilateral frontotemporal incision extended inferiorly to the neck, a lateral facial flap reflected anteriorly. Transection of the zygoma is followed by its reflection inferolaterally with the temporalis muscle. This exposure provides excellent visualization of both the intradural and extradural aspects of the anterior portion of the cavernous sinus, allowing an aggressive resection of neoplasms in this region. Experience with this procedure in t
