Mechanisms Underlying Range of Motion Improvements Following Acute and Chronic Static Stretching: A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis and Multivariate Meta-regression.

BACKGROUND: Static stretching (SS) is routinely used in sports and clinical settings to increase joint range of motion (ROM). However, the mechanisms underlying improvements in ROM remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the effects of a single session (acute) and multiple sessions (chronic) of SS on stretch tolerance, passive stiffness and fascicle length, and whether such effects are moderated by specific training parameters and participant characteristics. A secondary aim was to explore the mechanisms associated with improved ROM. METHODS: Seven databases (CINAHL Complete, Cochra

Orthopedic aspects of competitive swimming.

Orthopedic problems related to competitive swimming are rarely disabling, but can be problematic in preventing training and competition. Most problems are related to the shoulder and knee. Treatment is primarily nonsurgical and directed at relieving symptoms and allowing the athlete to continue with swimming practice. Treatment aids such as ice packing, anti-inflammatory medications, muscle stimulation and electrogalvanic stimulation, strengthening exercises, and static stretching are encouraged; upper arm bands and patellar-stabilizing supports can be adapted to training routines.

Effect of stretch exercises on suxamethonium induced fasciculations and myalgia.

Muscle fasciculations and pain following the administration of suxamethonium were assessed in a group of patients who performed a series of stretch exercises approximately 1 h before operation. Comparison was made with a group who received suxamethonium but no pretreatment. Fasciculations were significantly reduced in the exercised group, and the incidence of muscle pain decreased from 52% in the untreated group to 12% in the exercised group. A significant relationship was shown between the severity of visible fasciculations and muscle pain.

[Exercise and physical activities for the prevention of osteoporotic fractures: a review of the evidence].

According that osteoporosis is the common condition in an aging society such as in Japan, much progress has been made in understanding the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. Among potential risk factors, exercise and physical activities have been recognized as lifestyle factors that might influence the risk of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. To assess the relationship between exercises including physical activities and the risk for low bone mass and osteoporosis-related fractures, a literature search over past 13 years was conducted. Accumulating evidence indicates that exercis

[Cognitive behavioral therapy for tension-type headache: a case report].

Tension-type headache has a very high socioeconomic impact, and its lifetime prevalence is reported to be between 30% and 78% in different studies. It is widely acknowledged that noninvasive management with a multidisciplinary approach should be considered for the treatment of tension-type headache. Cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation exercises are efficient techniques. This article illustrates the application of a cognitive behavioral therapy protocol enhanced with progressive muscle stretching and relaxation exercises in the treatment of chronic tension-type headache via a case repor

Long-term results of functional treatment in intraarticular knee fractures and multifragment fractures of the shaft of femurs.

Functional treatment of fractures is a nonoperative technique used in intraarticular knee fractures and multifragment and multilevel fractures of the shaft of femurs since 1974. The basic principle of this technique is placement of the fractured extremity in the specially designed rehabilitation splint, with skeletal traction fixed above the ankle joint through both tibia and fibula. Traction reduces the fracture while stretching of muscles provides conditions favorable for callus formation. Exercises are first isometric and then isotonic. During exercises, muscle tone and moments of force in

Muscle strain of the subscapularis muscle: a case report.

We report on a case of muscle strain of the subscapularis muscle in a baseball player. An out-fielder (throws right-handed and bats left-handed) hurt his right shoulder while playing baseball. He complained of right-shoulder pain just after he forcefully hit his right hand against the fence in an attempt to jump and catch a flying ball with a glove on the left hand during a baseball game. Fat-suppressed T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the right shoulder joint revealed muscle strain in the middle part of the subscapularis muscle, and the injury was surmised to have occurred on a

The effects of stretching in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. While incurable, exercise has shown therapeutic benefits. Stretching, an accessible and low-cost modality, may improve mobility, balance, and flexibility, warranting systematic evaluation for managing PD symptoms. This systematic review aimed to examine and critically analyze scientific evidence on the effects of stretching in people with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A search was conducted in four electronic databases (Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro, and MEDLINE/Pu

Stretch syncope in humans: Evidence for symptomatic neural reflex hypotension triggered by stretching of shoulder and upper back muscles.

BACKGROUND: Stretch-induced syncope (SIS) is a poorly understood condition that we hypothesized may be due to a neural reflex hypotensive response triggered by stretching of shoulder/upper back muscles. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the impact of shoulder/upper back stretching on heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) responses in patients with SIS, with the findings in controls evaluated for symptoms unrelated to stretching. METHODS: The study population comprised 33 individuals: 9 otherwise healthy patients with SIS and 24 healthy controls. Beat-to-beat HR and systolic BP (SBP) and mean

[Stretching and chylothorax].

INTRODUCTION: Chylothorax is a rare cause of pleural effusion. The most common causes are iatrogenic or medical. We report an unusual and rare cause of bilateral chylothorax. CASE REPORT: A 73-year-old woman with no past history was admitted to the emergency department for sudden onset of dyspnoea. Chest X-ray and thoracic CT scan revealed large bilateral pleural effusions. Analysis of the fluid revealed a chylothorax. The patient was treated by chest tube drainage and a fat free (medium chain triglyceride) diet. This led to drying up of the effusions and rapid discharge. Complementary imagin

Long-Term Enhancement of Botulinum Toxin Injections for Post-Stroke Spasticity by Use of Stretching Exercises-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Botulinum toxin A (BONT/A) injections play a central role in the treatment of upper limb spasticity in stroke patients. We proposed structured stretching exercises to enhance the effect of post-stroke spasticity relief of the upper limbs following BONT/A injections. A total of 43 patients who had a stroke with grade 2 spasticity or higher on the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) in their upper-limb muscles were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 21) or control group (n = 22). The former received structured stretching exercises after their BONT/A injections for 20 min, 5 days per week, for

Effects of Static Hamstring Stretching on Maximal Sprint Speed and Relationship With Nordic Hamstring Strength.

This study aimed to determine the acute effects of static stretching of the hamstrings on maximal sprint speed and its spatiotemporal variables and lower-limb kinematics during the late swing phase, as well as the relationship with Nordic hamstring strength. The study had a within-participant experimental design. Sixteen healthy male college sprinters were asked to sprint 80 m without static stretching and with static stretching of the hamstrings for 4 × 30 s per leg before the sprint; both conditions were counterbalanced. The knee flexion peak torque was measured using the Nordic hamstring. T

Comparison of the effects of long-lasting static stretching and hypertrophy training on maximal strength, muscle thickness and flexibility in the plantar flexors.

Maximal strength measured via maximal voluntary contraction is known as a key factor in competitive sports performance as well as injury risk reduction and rehabilitation. Maximal strength and hypertrophy are commonly trained by performing resistance training programs. However, literature shows that long-term, long-lasting static stretching interventions can also produce significant improvements in maximal voluntary contraction. The aim of this study is to compare increases in maximal voluntary contraction, muscle thickness and flexibility after 6 weeks of stretch training and conventional hyp

Impact of unilateral single-mode balance training vs. combined balance and plyometric training on soccer players' interlimb asymmetry in balance and neuromuscular performance.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that unilateral balance training (BT) enhances balance and neuromuscular performance in the trained and untrained leg and thus has the potential to reduce side-to-side differences. However, it is unresolved how effective unilateral single-mode BT compared to unilateral combined balance and plyometric training (BT + PT) is in reducing interlimb asymmetry. Thus, we examined the impact of both training modalities on soccer players' interlimb asymmetry in balance and neuromuscular performance. METHODS: Sixty male elite youth soccer players were randomly assigned to a

The effects of chronic stretch training on musculoskeletal pain.

PURPOSE: One of the primary mechanisms for the increase in range of motion following stretching is an increase in pain/stretch tolerance. However, it remains unclear whether stretching can reduce pain in patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to investigate whether chronic stretch training can decrease pain in patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: In our search, we included three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and after removing duplicates, screened 797 papers. Six papers were found to be eligible for
