CASE REPORTS: unusual lateral clavicle fracture dislocation: case reports and museum specimens.

We present two clinical cases and four museum specimens of a type of lateral clavicle fracture dislocation that has not been detailed in any of the commonly accepted classification systems. With this injury, the major clavicular element is displaced downward and backward into the supraspinatus outlet and may cause symptomatic impingement. A method for surgical correction is described.

[The level of spontaneous phage production and sensitivity to melioidosis phages of museum cultures of Pseudomonas pseudomallei].

The phage-producing activity and sensitivity of museum cultures of a melioidosis agent to melioidosis phages have been studied. Most cultures show spontaneous phage-production, though its level differs in strains. Some of the melioidosis cultures demonstrate lack of phages. The fact that these strains have different sensitivity to chloroform lysate of cultures producing phages indicates their possible lysogenic state. Electron microscopy has shown the presence of at least tow morphological types of phages in P. pseudomallei C-141. These data confirm existence of polysogeny in the melioidosis a

Influence of visual design on young users' attention to digital museum homepages: an eye-tracking study.

Digital museum websites are often the first point of contact with collections, but their homepage designs vary in effectiveness at attracting and guiding attention. We examined how visual design elements affect the perceived appeal and attention distribution on digital museum homepages for young users. Mixed methods were used: interviews and a focus group identified candidate elements, a self-report study (n=70) rated museum homepages, and an eye-tracking experiment (n=40) tested six virtual homepages representing the most and least appealing sites. Paired t-tests and a generalized linear mixe

The politics of 'the politics of display': a nuclear-energy gallery, a science museum in the 1980s and a debate about patronage.

This article examines a controversy over a nuclear-energy gallery at the Science Museum, London, in the early 1980s. It uses this case to explore the wider politicization of museums at this time, and thus the politicization of the display of science and technology. It argues that cultural changes in train since the 1960s, coupled with a museological turn towards 'social history' as the proper vehicle for exhibiting science and technology, led to the museum becoming newly subject to widespread critical scrutiny. That scrutiny had contradictory effects. On the one hand, it reinforced the image o

Creative support: Enhancing well-being in mild and moderate cognitive impairment through museum interventions.

BackgroundThe global incidence of dementia is increasing, establishing it as a significant cause of disability and diminished quality of life. The World Health Organization underscores the necessity of enhancing the well-being of individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Research has indicated that art-based interventions can improve cognitive functions and overall quality of life. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the impact of a museum-based intervention program on the well-being (quality of life, depression, and mood) of individuals with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment (MCI-mod

Comparing Immersive and Non-Immersive VR: Effects on Spatial Learning and Aesthetic Experience in Museum Settings.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The use of virtual reality (VR) solutions in design has rapidly increased globally. However, it remains unclear to what extent these technologies enhance people's cognitive abilities. Understanding the impact of such technologies is essential for assessing their validity and effectiveness. In this controlled study, we investigated how HMD and non-immersive VR museum environments affect the ability to learn about the environment and the perception of the experience. METHODS: A total of 87 college students (46 females) were randomly assigned to either HMD or non-immersive

Stakeholder perspectives of an experiential learning program at a children's museum to promote healthy eating and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Encouraging healthy eating and physical activity in children has long-term benefits for their health and development, however many do not meet the requirements for fruit and vegetable consumption, or physical activity. Experiential learning (EL) has been shown to improve children's healthy eating and physical activity-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour. Children's museums provide opportunities for hands-on EL activities that can engage families. This study examined stakeholder perspectives on the perceived feasibility, acceptability, fidelity and impact of an EL health-pro

An Ancient Epstein-Barr Virus Genome Recovered From a Museum Penis Sheath From Papua.

Ancient DNA provides a unique opportunity to study the history and spread of infectious diseases. Here, we analyzed 21 samples from a collection of 20th century penis sheaths recorded as coming from Papua New Guinea, Papua (Indonesia) and Vanuatu, and housed at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac in Paris. Despite the presence of environmental species, we identified human-associated bacteria and, notably, an Epstein-Barr virus genome at high coverage. Phylogenetic analysis placed this strain within a Papua New Guinea-Indonesian cluster. These findings highlight museum collections as valuab

SEASONAL SUCCESSION OF CESTODE METACOMMUNITIES IN MUSEUM COLLECTIONS OF TWO NORTH AMERICAN SHREWS (SOREX SPP.).

Seasonal patterns in parasite diversity and prevalence are determined by a suite of factors ranging from environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, precipitation) to host behavior and traits. The forces shaping these patterns are increasingly unstable due to anthropogenic climate change, emphasizing the importance of leveraging natural history collections to understand how historical environmental conditions contributed to the spatiotemporal distributions of parasites and parasitic diseases. We implemented frameworks from metacommunity analyses to test for seasonal trends in parasite communi

Successful application of ancient DNA extraction and library construction protocols to museum wet collection specimens.

Millions of scientific specimens are housed in museum collections, a large part of which are fluid preserved. The use of formaldehyde as fixative and subsequent storage in ethanol is especially common in ichthyology and herpetology. This type of preservation damages DNA and reduces the chance of successful retrieval of genetic data. We applied ancient DNA extraction and single stranded library construction protocols to a variety of vertebrate samples obtained from wet collections and of different ages. Our results show that almost all samples tested yielded endogenous DNA. Archival DNA extract

Camphor wood, a potentially harmful museum storage material: an analytical study using instrumental methods.

Camphor wood is welcomed by museums due to its insect-repelling effect but the smell indicates a potential risk to the collections. In order to judge the suitability of camphor wood as a museum storage material, typical camphor wood (Cinnamomum camphora) samples aged for different years were evaluated by conducting the Oddy test. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) were applied to identifying the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the materials

Bringing HIV, Substance Abuse and Homelessness into the University of Pennsylvania Anthropology Museum through Photo-Ethnography.

In the fall of 1994 I befriended a community of some two dozen heroin injectors and crack smokers surviving under the overpasses of a tangle of freeways six blocks from where I lived in San Francisco. The full force of the Reagan-era cutbacks from the 1980s had trickled down to the street, shredding the already rachitic U.S. welfare safety-net. Inner-cities were gentrifying (especially those linked to the epicenters of global finance capital such as San Francisco). The former skid row habitat for the unstable urban poor-cheap single-residency hotels-was being converted into multi-million dolla

Temporal increase in organic mercury in an endangered pelagic seabird assessed by century-old museum specimens.

Methylmercury cycling in the Pacific Ocean has garnered significant attention in recent years, especially with regard to rising mercury emissions from Asia. Uncertainty exists concerning whether increases in anthropogenic emissions over time may have caused increased mercury bioaccumulation in the biota. To address this, we measured total mercury and, for a subset of samples, methylmercury (the bioaccumulated form of mercury) in museum feathers from an endangered seabird, the black-footed albatross (Phoebastria nigripes), spanning a 120-y period. We analyzed stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ(15)N

Teaching Slow Clinical Observation Through Art: A Museum-Based Innovation in Undergraduate Nursing Education.

BACKGROUND & NEED FOR INNOVATION: Health professions education needs learning experiences that help students practise careful observation, evidence-based description, interpretive reasoning and attention to the human dimensions of illness. Undergraduate nursing education still needs clearly described, theory-informed and transferable museum-based models that move beyond cultural enrichment. GOAL OF INNOVATION: We designed a curriculum-embedded museum-based innovation for first-year nursing students. Its central contribution is a transferable sequence for slow, deliberate and dialogic observat

Recovering Historical eDNA From Museum-Preserved Filter Feeders via Non-Destructive Metabarcoding.

Recent technical advances have significantly enhanced the value of museum specimens for molecular research, with metagenomic and metabarcoding approaches expanding further the utility of museum collections. However, given the finite number of specimens, there is a critical need to move past destructive DNA extraction approaches and to explore non-destructive techniques. In this proof-of-concept study, we evaluated the feasibility of extracting historical eDNA from the ethanol preservative used to store museum specimens. We compared a variety of extraction methods (centrifugation, evaporation,

Simple DNA extraction for museum beetle specimens to unlock genetic data from historical collections.

Museum beetle specimens are valuable resources for genetic analyses; however, obtaining DNA from aged specimens remains challenging due to degradation, desiccation, and contamination. In this study, we present a simple, low-cost protocol for extracting DNA from museum beetles, optimized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). This method effectively addresses common issues such as DNA fragmentation and contamination, enabling the recovery of DNA suitable for downstream applications such as PCR and next-generation sequencing. It provides a reproducible, non-destructive approach to extracti
