Music and Art-Therapy: Observation Practice

In modern music therapy, several forms of influence on a person are distinguished: receptive (or passive), active and integrative, when the patient interacts with different types of arts. The article deals with the integrative form of influence on

How groove in music affects gait.

Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) is a gait intervention in which gait-disordered patients synchronise footsteps to music or metronome cues. Musical 'groove', the tendency of music to induce movement, has previously been shown to be associated with faster gait, however, why groove affects gait remains unclear. One mechanism by which groove may affect gait is that of beat salience: music that is higher in groove has more salient musical beats, and higher beat salience might reduce the cognitive demands of perceiving the beat and synchronizing footsteps to it. If groove's effects on gait are d

Music festivals and drugs: Wastewater analysis.

Drug consumption in individual cities, regions, and at various music events and festivals across the EU has generally been monitored via questionnaires, patients' medical data, and police reports. However, an overview of drug consumption obtained from these methods can be negatively affected by various subjective factors. We aimed to investigate an association between levels of target drugs in wastewater, music genres, and festival courses. The occurrence of illicit drugs, their metabolites, and psychoactive compounds was investigated in the influent of six wastewater treatment plants in the C

Sound exposure during outdoor music festivals.

Most countries have guidelines to regulate sound exposure at concerts and music festivals. These guidelines limit the allowed sound pressure levels and the concert/festival's duration. In Norway, where there is such a guideline, it is up to the local authorities to impose the regulations. The need to prevent hearing-loss among festival participants is self-explanatory, but knowledge of the actual dose received by visitors is extremely scarce. This study looks at two Norwegian music festivals where only one was regulated by the Norwegian guideline for concert and music festivals. At each festiv

Extreme Metal Music and Anger Processing.

The claim that listening to extreme music causes anger, and expressions of anger such as aggression and delinquency have yet to be substantiated using controlled experimental methods. In this study, 39 extreme music listeners aged 18-34 years were subjected to an anger induction, followed by random assignment to 10 min of listening to extreme music from their own playlist, or 10 min silence (control). Measures of emotion included heart rate and subjective ratings on the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Results showed that ratings of PANAS hostility, irritability, and stress increase

Music and psychophysiological recovery from stress.

OBJECTIVE: This experimental study examined whether listening to self-chosen music after stress exposure improves mood, decreases subjective arousal and rumination, and facilitates cardiovascular recovery. METHOD: Participants (N = 123) were exposed to a mental arithmetic task with harassment to induce stress. Afterward, participants were randomly assigned to one of four "recovery" conditions where they (1) listened to self-chosen relaxing music, (2) listened to self-chosen happy music, (3) listened to an audio book, or (4) sat in silence. After this 5-minute "recovery manipulation period," p

Workshop--cough: exercise, speech and music.

Twelve distinguished scientists attended the workshop, heard three presentations, and took part in the discussions. Fontana first described his unpublished studies on cough in exercise and during hyperventilation with healthy subjects. Both activities depressed cough induced by inhalation of distilled water aerosol (fog). The possible mechanisms were discussed. Gibson then described the successful use of speech therapy to treat chronic cough, and discussed the possible mechanisms, centering on the role of the larynx and its neural control. A comparison was made with the ability of speech and l

Posturographic changes associated with music listening.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to ascertain whether listening to music might cause changes in human stability and be useful in fall prevention and rehabilitation. The aim was also to find what percentage of subjects without neurologic signs or symptoms associated with falling had less than ideal stability. DESIGN: Computer dynamic posturography (CDP) provided stability scores in 266 subjects without a history of falls or vertigo. Subjects were randomized into several different music listening groups and one control group. The music listening groups were given a daily specific music lis

RadioMe: an automated home-based radio, music playlist, and diary reminder system: Report on recruitment, music compilation, and listening, and preliminary testing of heart rate activated music.

BACKGROUND: One of the leading reasons for early admission to a care home in dementia is the escalation of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), and music listening can help regulate these symptoms. AIMS: RadioMe was a project designed for people living at home with dementia to build a system to help them maintain the highest quality of life there for as long as possible, with three functional components: 1. Streaming radio; 2. Providing pre-recorded spoken diary reminders; 3. interrupting the radio with pre-compiled playlists when a wrist-worn heart rate (HR) monitor detects stress. This article

Personalised music as a treatment for epilepsy.

In this paper we look at non-pharmaceutical treatments for intractable epilepsy based on neurophysiological methods especially with EEG analysis. In summary, there are a number of limbic and thalamo-cortical related structures involved in the processing of musical emotion (exposure), including the amygdala (arousal, expression of mood, fear), hippocampus (memory, regulation of HPA axis, stress), parahippocampal gyrus (recognition, memory retrieval), insula (valence), temporal poles (connectivity), ventral striatum (expectation and experience of reward), orbitofrontal cortex (valence) and cingu

Psychedelia: The interplay of music and psychedelics.

Music and psychedelics have been intertwined throughout the existence of Homo sapiens, from the early shamanic rituals of the Americas and Africa to the modern use of psychedelic-assisted therapy for a variety of mental health conditions. Across such settings, music has been highly prized for its ability to guide the psychedelic experience. Here, we examine the interplay between music and psychedelics, starting by describing their association with the brain's functional hierarchy that is relied upon for music perception and its psychedelic-induced manipulation, as well as an exploration of the

Is music the food of the anesthesia in children?

BACKGROUND: The noise in an operating room may have a detrimental effect on human cognitive functions, and it may cause perioperative anxiety with prolonged exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of music therapy and use of earplugs and normal noise level in the operating room under general anesthesia of pediatric patients on hemodynamic parameters and postoperative emergence delirium. METHODS: One hundred and five pediatric patients were involved in this study. The patients were randomly divided into three groups. Group N was exposed to the ambient operating room nois

Listening to music for insomnia in adults.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common problem in modern society. It is associated with reduced quality of life and impairments in physical and mental health. Listening to music is widely used as a sleep aid, but it remains unclear if it can actually improve insomnia in adults. This Cochrane Review is an update of a review published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of listening to music on sleep in adults with insomnia and to assess the influence of specific variables that may moderate the effect. SEARCH METHODS: For this update, we searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, nine other databases

Advances in the Neurocognition of Music and Language.

Neurocomparative music and language research has seen major advances over the past two decades. The goal of this Special Issue "Advances in the Neurocognition of Music and Language" was to showcase the multiple neural analogies between musical and linguistic information processing, their entwined organization in human perception and cognition and to infer the applicability of the combined knowledge in pedagogy and therapy. Here, we summarize the main insights provided by the contributions and integrate them into current frameworks of rhythm processing, neuronal entrainment, predictive coding a

Musical hallucinations and their relation with epilepsy.

Musical hallucinations are poorly understood phenomena. Their relation with epilepsy was first described over a century ago, but never systematically explored. We, therefore, reviewed the literature, and assessed all descriptions of musical hallucinations attributed to epileptic activity. Our search yielded 191 articles, which together describe 983 unique patients, with 24 detailed descriptions of musical hallucinations related to epilepsy. We also describe six of our own patients. Based on the phenomenological descriptions and neurophysiological data, we distinguish four subgroups of epilepsy

Dementia and the Power of Music Therapy.

Dementia is now a leading cause of both mortality and morbidity, particularly in western nations, and current projections for rates of dementia suggest this will worsen. More than ever, cost effective and creative non-pharmacological therapies are needed to ensure we have an adequate system of care and supervision. Music therapy is one such measure, yet to date statements of what music therapy is supposed to bring about in ethical terms have been limited to fairly vague and under-developed claims about an improvement in well-being. This article identifies the relevant sense of wellbeing at sta

[Acquired amusia and musical anhedonia].

Amusia is defined as an auditory agnosia, specifically related to music, resulting from a cerebral lesion or being of congenital origin. Amusia is rarely associated to musical anhedonia. We report the case of a 43-year-old patient who suffered in January 2012 from a right ischemic lesion affecting the superior temporal cortex, in particular lateral Heschl Gyrus and the posterior part of the Superior Temporal Gyrus (Brodmann areas 21 and 22). Neuropsychological tests revealed an amusia combined to musical anhedonia. The specificity of this case is based on the combination of both syndromes high

Musical hallucinations and Parkinson disease.

INTRODUCTION: Musical hallucinations are complex auditory hallucinations. The term covers the clinical phenomenon of hearing tunes and melodies that are uncontrollable and not related to external stimuli. Musical hallucinations may be experienced in a variety of conditions including diseases of the ear and neurologic, psychiatric, infectious, and toxic states. When the underlying pathology resolves, musical hallucinations tend to disappear. CASE REPORT: We present an elderly man with musical hallucinations and without any conditions known to be related with its occurrence, except for Parkinso

The representation of epilepsy in popular music.

Much can be learned about the contemporary stereotypes associated with epilepsy by studying the representation of the disorder in paintings, literature, and movies. Popular music is arguably the most accessible and ubiquitous of the creative art forms, touching most of us on a daily basis. Reviewed here are the ways in which epilepsy and seizures are used in the lyrics of musicians from a wide variety of musical genres, from hip-hop to rhythm and blues. Many of the ancient associations of epilepsy with madness, horror, and lunacy can be found in these lyrics. However, the language of epilepsy
