Constricting pythons, known for their ability to consume infrequent, massive meals, exhibit rapid and reversible cardiac hypertrophy following feeding. Our primary goal was to investigate how python hearts achieve this adaptive response after feeding. Isolated myofibrils increased force after feeding without changes in sarcomere ultrastructure and without increasing energy cost. AIMS: To compare the ultrastructural aspects of human extraocular muscles in two types of mitochondrial disease: chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) and Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON).
METHODS: Muscle samples of the medial rectus obtained from surgery in a sporadic case of CPEO associated with deleted mitochondrial DNA, and post mortem in a case of 3460/ND1 LHON were processed for electron microscopy (EM). White muscle disease (WMD), a selenium-responsive cardiac myopathy in neonatal lambs has been described from southern Iran. 15 lambs in terminal condition were referred to our lab. Chronic supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) causes left ventricular (LV) dilatation and dysfunction. Termination of SVT appears to reduce LV size and improve function. A direct statistically reliable correction of decrease of the enzymes with the initial state of the patients has been established in an analysis of 25 patients aged from 18 to 60 years in prosthesis of+ the mitral valve (n-9) and closed mitral commissurotomy (n-16). The enzyme activity after prosthesis of+ the mitral valve was twice lower that after closed commissurotomy. Activity of ATP-ase of myofibrils proved to be most sensitive to negative factors of operation.

Horses on several farms in Mozambique were inadvertently fed with a concentrate containing 69 ppm monensin. The horses developed acute signs of toxicity and several died. The animals were depressed, anorectic and paretic before death. Epistaxis was observed in 1 case. Petechial haemorrhages were present in the muscles, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and spleen in 3 horses necropsied. No significant histopathological cardiac and skeletal muscle lesions were seen, except in 1 case, in which there was focal loss of myofibrils.

Electromicroscopial changes were observed in arterioles, nerves, and striated skeleton muscle cells in a case of clinically and histologically definite polyarteritis nodosa with polyneuropathy. Inflammatory infiltrates were found in and around arteriolar walls; motor nerves were partly demarkated and presynaptic motor endplates were degenerated. The myofibrills of skeleton muscle cells showed a disorganization that is regarded as the morphological substrate for the clinically observed muscular weakness in this case.
