Lysyl oxidase like 3 (LOXL3) is a copper-dependent amine oxidase responsible for the crosslinking of collagen and elastin in the extracellular matrix. LOXL3 belongs to a family including other members: LOX, LOXL1, LOXL2, and LOXL4. Autosomal recessive mutations are rare and described in patients with Stickler syndrome, early-onset myopia and non-syndromic cleft palate. Along with an essential function in embryonic development, multiple biological functions have been attributed to LOXL3 in various pathologies related to amino oxidase activity. Additionally, various novel roles have been describ

The expression of the 43 kDa dystrophin-associated glycoprotein (43DAG) has been studied using immunohistochemical labelling with a monoclonal antibody, MANDAG-1, and compared with immunolabelling for dystrophin and the dystrophin-related protein, utrophin, in normal muscle and in muscle from 50 patients with neuromuscular disease. 43DAG and dystrophin were expressed in vascular smooth muscle and at the sarcolemma of normal muscle fibres, with increased labelling at neuromuscular and myotendinous junctions. 43DAG expression was reduced in Duchenne and Becker dystrophies with patchy labelling,

The pectoralis major muscle is the largest muscle of the anterior chest wall. The primary function of the muscle is to adduct and internally rotate the arm at the shoulder. The pectoralis major muscle is broken down into two main components or "heads" based upon muscle fiber origin: clavicular and sternal. Pectoralis major muscle injury results from direct trauma or indirect force overload. The inferior sternal head fibers are the most commonly torn. The pectoralis major tendon most commonly is torn at the humeral insertion. Magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution ultrasound have value

BACKGROUND: The middle glenohumeral ligament (MGHL) is the least well characterized glenohumeral ligament and its distal insertion remains matter of debate. The aim of this study was to describe the histological features of the distal insertion of the MGHL and its interactions with the subscapularis tendon. Our hypothesis was that the MGHL inserts distally on the articular surface of the subscapularis tendon.
METHODS: Macroscopic and histological analysis of the insertion of the MGHL was performed in 16 shoulders obtained from 10 fresh cadaver dissections from a posterior approach. Macroscopi

The high retear rate after a successful repair of the rotator cuff (RC) is a major clinical challenge. Muscle atrophy and fat accumulation of RC muscles over time adversely affect the rate of retear. Since current surgical techniques do not improve muscle degenerative conditions, new treatments are being developed to reduce muscle atrophy and fat accumulation. In the previous study, we have shown the efficacy of aligned electroconductive nanofibrous fabricated by coating poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) nanoparticles onto aligned poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)

The aim of this study was to examine the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) parenchyma, myotendinous junction, and tendon in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients using 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results were compared with findings reported in the literature, in which the LPM has been attributed a major role in triggering TMD. 3T MRI was used for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) imaging. The MRI images of 63 patients were analysed for muscle contracture and atrophy, tendon rupture, signal alterations of the tendon, tendon contrast enhancement, and peritendinous fluid collection. Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) lack the protein dystrophin, which is a critical molecular component of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC). Dystrophin is hypothesized to function as a molecular shock absorber that mechanically stabilizes the sarcolemma of striated muscle through interaction with the cortical actin cytoskeleton via its N-terminal half and with the transmembrane protein β-dystroglycan via its C-terminal region. Utrophin is a fetal homologue of dystrophin that can subserve many dystrophin functions and is therefore under active investigation as a dystrophin

This study was designed to detect the first evidence of injury to muscle induced by passive stretching. Rabbit extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior skeletal muscles were subjected to passive stretching at set force levels of 20% or 30% of load to failure. Both tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles that were stretched to 30% exhibited no difference in the three tensile parameters when compared with their contralateral control specimens. Maximum contractile force was decreased after stretching. Tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum muscles that were stretched to 2

Shear wave elastography is an emerging diagnostic tool used to assess for changes in the stiffness of muscle. Each region of the muscle may have a different stiffness; therefore, the anatomical region should be carefully selected. Machine vendors each have unique methods for calculating the returned stiffness values and, consequently, a high level of agreement in measurement between machines (quantified using the intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] and Bland-Altman analysis) will allow research findings to be translated to the clinic. This study assessed three locations within the biceps

Triceps injuries are relatively uncommon in most traumatic events, and the distal triceps tendon ruptures are rare. Recently, the knowledge of this tendon lesion has increased, and it seems to be related to more precise diagnostic and clinical assessments. The most common mechanism of injury remains a forceful eccentric contraction of the muscle, while several other risk factors have been studied as chronic renal failure, endocrine disorders, metabolic bone diseases as well as steroid use. Olecranon bursitis and local corticosteroid injections may also play a role. The commonest site of ruptur

BACKGROUND: Muscle injuries affecting the Adductor Longus are not all localised at the level of the proximal myotendinous junction and enthesis. Thus, the main purpose of this article was to raise awareness of the imaging features of the Perivascular Adductor Longus muscle injury, which currently remains widely under-recognised.
METHODS: The ultrasound (US) and Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) images of five professional football players were retrospectively reassessed to identify distinctive imaging details of the Perivascular Adductor Longus muscle injury. Complementary information regardin

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Accurate needle electromyography (EMG) of the short head of the biceps femoris (SHBF) is often important to localize nerve damage when proximal to the fibular head. Techniques have been proposed for accurate SHBF EMG; however, needle placement accuracy is low and with the risk of inadvertent needle placement into the long head (LHBF) potentially resulting in false localization and inappropriate operative management. This study aimed to define the optimal window for accurate SHBF needle EMG placement through ultrasound (US) investigation of the anatomical relationships of the

The authors describe a patient with recurrent perineurioma arising in the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal forearm and extending along the forearm fascia. Soft tissue perineurioma is a rare, originally benign peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm arising from the perineurium, a protective cell barrier surrounding the individual fascicles in peripheral nerves. Perineurioma has only recently been recognized as an entity distinct from other nerve sheath tumors, such as schwannoma and neurofibroma, with unique morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunoreactive features. The recurrent tumor had converted

Tenascin-C (TN-C) is a hexabrachion-shaped extracellular matrix (ECM) protein which has very restricted expression in normal musculoskeletal tissues, but is expressed in large quantities in these tissues during embryogenesis as well as during regenerative and healing processes. TN-C is an elastic protein which has a number of binding sites for other extracellular matrix proteins as well as for cell membrane adhesion receptors. In addition, it can be stretched to several times its resting length, the ability of which is attributed to the stretch-induced unfolding of its fibronectin type III dom

Pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) are skeletal disorders resulting from mutations in COMP, matrilin-3 or collagen IX and are characterised by short-limbed dwarfism and premature osteoarthritis. Interestingly, recent reports suggest patients can also manifest with muscle weakness. Here we present a detailed analysis of two mouse models of the PSACH/MED disease spectrum; ΔD469 T3-COMP (PSACH) and V194D matrilin-3 (MED). In grip test experiments T3-COMP mice were weaker than wild-type littermates, whereas V194D mice behaved as controls, confirming that short-lim

The passive properties of the muscle-tendon unit are regularly assessed in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). However, no information is available on the passive properties of adult muscle, and whether any differences exist between the paretic and control muscles. Eleven ambulant male athletes with spastic hemiplegic CP (21.2 ± 3.0 years) and controls without neurological impairment (age = 21.8 ± 2.2 years) completed two and one passive stretch session, respectively. During each session, the ankle was passively dorsiflexed until end range of motion (ROM), whilst recording passive ankle angl

PURPOSE: Antibodies against collagen XIII have previously been identified in patients with active thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). Although collagen XIII expression has been described in extraocular muscles and orbital fat, its detailed localization in extraocular and thyroid tissues and the connection to autoimmunity for collagen XIII remain unclear. Our objective was to map the potential targets for these antibodies in the tissues of the orbit and thyroid.
METHODS: We evaluated the expression of collagen XIII in human patient and mouse orbital and thyroid tissues with immunostaining
