Molecular characterization of two Myxidium species (Cnidaria: Bivalvulida: Myxidiidae) infecting barbs in the Sea of Galilee, Israel.

Myxozoans are parasitic cnidarians that can cause severe damage to fish, resulting in economic losses to aquaculture and fisheries. In Israel, only a few taxonomic studies have been conducted on Myxozoa infecting freshwater fish and none on barb parasites. Here, we describe two new myxozoan species - Myxidium grauri n. sp. and Myxidium sharmai n. sp. - from the gallbladder of the barbs Carasobarbus canis and Luciobarbus longiceps, respectively, from the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret). The prevalence of infection was 42.2% (19/45) for M. grauri n. sp. and 25% (5/20) for M. sharmai n. sp. We obt

Phylogenetic position of Triangula perccotti (Dogiel & Achmerov in Achmerov, 1960) (Myxobolidae), a skin myxozoan parasite of fish Perccottus glenii Dybowski (Odontobutidae) estimated from partial 18S rRNA gene sequence.

The myxozoan genus Triangula Chen & Hsieh, 1984 has a strong morphological similarity with the genus Cardimyxobolus Ma, Dong, & Wang, 1982, and their distinction presents a complex taxonomic problem that cannot be resolved without molecular data. Here we first provided phylogenic reconstructions of Triangula spp. and Cardimyxobolus spp. using molecular data from Triangula perccotti (Dogiel & Achmerov in Achmerov, 1960). Polysporic plasmodia of T. perccotti were collected from the skin of P. glenii caught in the Lake Bolon basin (Amur system) and molecularly characterized based on the 18S rRNA

Histopathological and functional evidence of intestinal mucosal disruption in emaciated olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) infected with Enteromyxum leei.

Emaciation disease associated with Enteromyxum leei infection is a major health concern in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) aquaculture, but the structure-function basis underlying this condition remains incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated whether emaciation in E. leei-infected olive flounder is linked to intestinal mucosal disruption and impaired digestive and absorptive function. Fish were classified based on external appearance, relative condition factor, and polymerase chain reaction-based detection of E. leei. Infected fish exhibited markedly lower relative cond

Description of Ellipsomyxa prima n. sp. in the gallbladder of Gambusia yucatana (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from freshwater springs in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

The Celestún Lagoon is located on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in southern Mexico. The peripheral margins of the lagoon are exposed to a constant influx of water from freshwater springs, where a wide diversity of freshwater fishes occurs. Simultaneously, these freshwater springs are mixing with marine water from the sea and brackish water from the lagoon. Gambusia yucatana is an endemic poeciliid freshwater fish of this coastal region, with no current parasitological records. In December 2023, 24 specimens from two freshwater springs near the Celestún Lagoon were examined for myxozoan in

Biodiversity and five novel species of myxozoan parasites in Barbonymus spp. (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) from Malaysia.

Up to this time, only five myxosporean species have been documented from fishes of the Barbonymus genus. Due to a limited number of myxozoan studies conducted in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, the diversity of this parasite group remains largely undiscovered. In this study, a comprehensive parasitology survey was conducted, revealing nine myxozoan parasites, including five different Myxobolus spp., three Thelohanellus sp. and one Myxidium sp. Using morphological and molecular data, we describe here five new species: Myxobolus gonionoti n. sp., found in the gill filaments; Myxobolus

Morphological and phylogenetic characterisation of Unicauda tavaresii n. sp. (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae): a parasite of the circumorbital tissue of the eye of two characiform fishes from the Amazon region of Brazil.

Myxozoans of the family Myxobolidae are common parasites in fish. The diversity and ecology of the species of the genus Unicauda are poorly known, which hampers the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, cysts containing parasites whose morphology was consistent with the genus Unicauda were found in the circumorbital region of the ocular conjunctiva of the freshwater fish Moenkhausia grandisquamis Müller & Troschel, 1845 (Characiformes: Characidae) and Triportheus angulatus Spix & Agassiz, 1829 (Characiformes: Triportheidae). Immune-triggering effect of the foodborne parasite Kudoa septempunctata through the C-type lectin Mincle in HT29 cells.

This study developed three microcapsule emulsions containing thymol, D-limonene, and their 1:1 mixture as the main active ingredients, designated as THY, LIM, and T-L, respectively. Their physical stability, insecticidal activity against Aedes albopictus larvae, and sustained-release performance were evaluated. In addition, changes in the gut microbiota of mosquito larvae before and after exposure to the three formulations were analyzed to preliminarily investigate the potential mechanisms underlying their insecticidal effects. The results showed that all three microcapsule emulsions exhibited

Bromodeoxyuridine DNA labelling reveals host and parasite proliferation in a fish-myxozoan model.

Enteromyxum leei is a myxozoan parasite responsible for enteritis in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). The parasite proliferates in the paracellular space of the intestinal epithelium and induces an inflammatory reaction. To assess intestinal cell turnover and parasite proliferation, fish were infected with the parasite by anal intubation; after 17 and 64 days, the cell proliferative marker bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was administered; and after 24 hr, tissue samples were taken for immunohistochemical detection. Parasite exposure induced increased epithelial and immune cell proliferation in all

The Immune Response to the Myxozoan Parasite Myxobolus cerebralis in Salmonids: A Review on Whirling Disease.

Salmonids are affected by the economically significant whirling disease (WD) caused by the myxozoan parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. In the past, it was endemic to Eurasia, but it has now spread to different regions of North America, Europe, New Zealand, and South Africa. Among salmonids, rainbow trout is considered the most highly susceptible host. Upon entering to the host's body, the parasite invades the spine and cranium, resulting in whirling behaviour, a blackened tail, and destruction of cartilage. The disease is characterized by the infiltration of numerous inflammatory cells, primarily
