A new surgical technique for ingrown toenail.

Background. Ingrowing toenails are a common condition which, when recurrent and painful, are often treated surgically. The aim of this study is to present a new simple surgical technique for ingrown toenails with good results. Method and Patients. The selected 250 patients with affected toes were surgically treated by our technique and observed from 1998 to 2004. Marginal nail elevation combined with surgical excision of the granulation tissue was more successful. For fixing the nail margin on the toe we have done one-bite suture by Nylon 3/0 that was removed after 3 weeks. Results. All patien

[Relationship between dysfunctions and parafunctional oral habits, and temporomandibular disorders in children and teenagers].

UNLABELLED: Oral parafunctional habits and orofacial myofunctional dysfunctions are commonly observed in children and considered as contributory factors for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this work was to describe the frequency of oral parafunctional habits and orofacial myofunctional dysfunctions and to evaluate the association between them and signs and symptoms of TMD in patients attending to the TMD section of the Pediatric Dentistry Department of the University of Buenos Aires. METHODS: Data obtained from dental records performed during 2003-2007 were entered into a databa

Relationship between bad oral habits, signs, and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders among Saudi population: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: According to the American Dental Association, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) refer to a group of disorders characterised by pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the periauricular area, or the muscles of mastication. TMJ noise/sounds, and any deviations or restriction during jaw movements. Many oral habits are common and usually do not harm the TMJ and associated structures. However, these habits may result in TMJ disorders, if the activity goes beyond someone's physiological tolerance. The causes of degenerative changes of TMJ are believed to be multifactorial and controve

The effects of picric acid (2,4,6-trinitrophenol) and a bite-deterrent chemical (denatonium benzoate) on autotomy in rats after peripheral nerve lesion.

Denervation of the hind limb is a technique used to study peripheral nerve regeneration. Autotomy or autophagia is an undesirable response to denervation in such studies. Application of a commercially available lotion used to deter nail biting in humans reduced autotomy in rats after denervation but did not completely prevent it. In this study, this authors evaluated the application of picric acid to prevent autotomy in rats in peripheral nerve experiments. They carried out sciatic nerve transection in 41 adult female Wistar rats and then applied either bite-deterrent lotion (n = 26) or satura

Childhood nail diseases.

The diagnosis of pediatric nail populations is complicated because a large proportion of pediatric nail presentations involve parents bringing in their children with questions regarding nail appearance rather than the plain presentation of a disease or functional problem. Parents are concerned whether the nails are normal, if they are uncomfortable for the baby or child, if the nails will affect walking or other future function, or if the changes are of wider significance and suggest more sinister medical problems than are yet apparent. To address these concerns, the clinician needs a good gra

The Potential of N-Acetylcysteine for Treatment of Trichotillomania, Excoriation Disorder, Onychophagia, and Onychotillomania: An Updated Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania (TTM), excoriation disorder, onychophagia, and onychotillomania are categorized as body focused repetitive behavior (BFRB) disorders, causing damage to the skin, hair, and/or nails with clinically significant psychosocial consequences. Currently, there are no standardized treatments for these compulsive, self-induced disorders. Studies on treatment of these disorders using psychotropic drugs (i.e., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, anticonvulsants) have shown variable efficacy. Recently, there is a growing interest in N-acetylcyste

An Examination of Executive Functioning in Young Adults Exhibiting Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), including hair pulling, nail biting, and skin picking are repetitive, habitual, and compulsive in nature. Although characteristic of disorders such as trichotillomania and skin picking disorder, BFRBs are associated with other psychiatric conditions as well. To date, research has failed to examine neurocognitive risk factors, particularly executive functioning, implicated in BFRBs utilizing a transdiagnostic approach. The present study recruited 53 participants (n = 27 demonstrating BFRBs and n = 26 randomly selected controls) from a larger sample of

A simple method for reducing autotomy in rats after peripheral nerve lesions.

Experiments using peripheral nerve lesions (crush or transection) in rats to study repair processes are hampered by the tendency for the animals to attack the limb in which the peripheral nerves are damaged (autotomy). In this paper we describe a simple method which significantly reduces the incidence of autotomy after peripheral nerve lesions. The method consists of painting the hind paws of operated rats with a commercially available non-toxic lotion, which is used to discourage nail-biting and thumb-sucking in humans. Although the method is not absolute, it was extremely beneficial in our e

Obsessive-compulsive behaviour related cutaneous ulcers: two cases with therapeutic considerations.

Obsessive-compulsive-related cutaneous disease most often includes trichotillomania, neurotic excoriations and nail biting. In this report, we present two cases of self-inflicted severe wounds that were diagnosed as secondary to obsessive-compulsive behaviour. Patients were middle-aged females who presented with deep cutaneous ulcers that were acknowledgedly maintained through repetitive manipulation. Obsessive-compulsive-related cutaneous disease is better treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants in higher dosages than those used to treat depression. Both patients were treate

Root resorption after orthodontic treatment in high- and low-risk patients: analysis of allergy as a possible predisposing factor.

The development of excessive root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement is an adverse side-effect, which is of great concern. The aim of this investigation was to analyse factors that might be associated with orthodontically induced root resorption. After buccal movement of maxillary premolars in 96 adolescents, the experimental teeth were extracted and subjected to histological analysis and measurement of resorbed root area. Fifty individuals, 18 boys and 32 girls, mean age 13.4 years, were selected and divided into two equal groups: the high-risk group based on measurements of the mos

The silent struggle: Barriers, delays, and missed opportunities in the treatment of body-focused repetitive behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs; e.g., skin picking, trichotillomania, nail biting, cavitadaxia/lip-cheek biting), many affected individuals neither seek nor receive adequate treatment. This study investigates treatment-seeking behaviors and experience with self-help strategies as well as professional interventions among individuals with BFRBs. METHODS: A total of 971 participants with BFRBs were recruited via online platforms and self-help organizations. Participants completed the Generic Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Scale (GBS-8) and a

Self-mutilating autocannibalistic onycophagia causing infectious compartment syndrome, osteomyelitis, and sepsis: A case report and review of the literature.

Onycophagia, or nail-biting, is common in adults and children, but self-mutilating onycophagia is almost exclusively associated with nerve injury and psychiatric comorbidities, and may lead to osteomyelitis and flexor tenosynovitis. Cases with autophagy or autocannabalistic components are extremely rare, as are cases requiring proximal amputation. Behavioral interventions are rarely successful, but the literature supports psychiatric medication to decrease the onycophagic impulse. We therefore present a 70-year-old male with history of severe onycophagia, diabetic neuropathy, and vascular dise

A 7-month-old female child born to nonconsanguineous parents with a history of global developmental delay, since early infancy had reported to the department with facial features of mild dysmorphism. History of finger sucking and finger biting was evident, as there was a massive scab tissue over the dorsal aspect of the index finger, above the finger nail bed. A huge ulcer was evident on the right side of the dorsal aspect of anterior two-thirds of the tongue. Genetic evaluation through targeted gene sequencing confirmed the diagnosis as hereditary sensory, autonomic neuropathy Type VIII (Onli
