Reconstruction of orbital floor fractures using autologous nasal septal bone graft.

We describe herein a new technique for reconstruction of the orbital floor, using autologous nasal septal bone and report the surgical results achieved in maxillofacial trauma patients.Prior to its clinical surgical application, a cadaver practice was carried out on 5 formalin-fixed adult human cadavers to establish the feasibility and efficacy of the method. Fifteen patients with orbital floor fractures, operated between 2005 and 2008, using this technique, were included in the current study.Cadaveric practice revealed that an adequate and appropriate size of septal bone graft can be harveste

[Ultrasonographic fetal nasal bone assessment in prenatal screening for Down syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinic value of ultrasonographic fetal nasal bone examination as a screening marker for Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: The study was conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from Oct 2004 to Mar 2007. Two-dimensional ultrasound was used to assess the fetal nasal bone of 1863 normal pregnancies (normal group) and 25 cases with DS fetus (study group) during their second and third trimesters. The incidence of nasal bone absence or short nasal bone in two groups was determined. The fetal nasal bone absence should be confirmed in three orthog

Nasal bone hypoplasia in trisomy 21 at 15-22 weeks' gestation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential value of ultrasound examination of the fetal profile for present/hypoplastic fetal nasal bone at 15-22 weeks' gestation as a marker for trisomy 21. METHODS: This was an observational ultrasound study in 1046 singleton pregnancies undergoing amniocentesis for fetal karyotyping at 15-22 (median, 17) weeks' gestation. Immediately before amniocentesis the fetal profile was examined to determine if the nasal bone was present or hypoplastic (absent or shorter than 2.5 mm). The incidence of nasal hypoplasia in the trisomy 21 and the chromosomally normal fetuse

Flipped Nasal Bone Fracture: Peculiar Fracture Pattern in a Pediatric Patient.

Fractures to the facial bone in the pediatric population often show a different fracture pattern from that of the adult population. In this brief report, the authors share their experience with a nasal bone fracture in a 12-year-old child showing a bizarre fracture pattern, an inside-out displacement of the nasal bone. The authors share the detailed findings of this fracture and describe the method for reducing the fracture back to the proper position.

Antibiotic use in nasal bone fracture: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic antibiotics are used to prevent surgical wound infection; however, proper indications must be followed with careful consideration of the risks and benefits, especially in clean or clean-contaminated wounds. Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial bone fracture. The most common method for treating nasal bone fracture is closed reduction, which is performed inside the nasal cavity without an incision. The purpose of this study was to determine the need for antibiotic use in the closed reduction of nasal bone fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study was

Is Surgical Navigation Useful During Closed Reduction of Nasal Bone Fractures?

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a 42-year-old woman with a nasal bone fracture that was easily treated using a surgical navigation system. METHODS: In this clinical report, the authors suggest that intraoperative surgical navigation systems are useful diagnostically and for localizing sites of nasal bone fractures exactly. RESULTS: The patient underwent successful closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical navigation is a useful tool for identifying nasal bone fracture locations and for guiding closed reduction. Surgical navigation is recommended when nasal bone fra

Cortical tibial bone graft for nasal augmentation: donor site short scar.

The nose is the central part of the face and the most prominent facial feature. Augmentation rhinoplasty is one of the most exciting and arduous techniques for plastic surgeon and patient. Fourteen cases of augmentation rhinoplasty with cortical tibial bone graft are presented. An endonasal approach was used in 13 cases and an open approach in one case, with a donor site short scar (1.5 cm) in every case. The average follow up was 2 years and no significant bone resorption was observed. No remarkable complications or complications requiring surgery were noted during the follow up. The cosmetic

Autologous bone marrow transplantation for primary nasal T/NK cell lymphoma.

Primary nasal T or NK cell lymphoma is rarely seen in the Western population but is more common in the Orientals. Although it often presents with localized disease, the prognosis is generally poor. Long-term remission is seen in only 50% of patients with stage I disease despite aggressive treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and is invariably fatal if disseminated. Conventional chemotherapy for relapsed disease is usually not successful. Since 1992, three patients with relapsed primary nasal T/NK cell lymphoma have received high-dose chemotherapy with autologous bone marrow rescue at

[Infra-saccular lacrimal duct stenosis caused by bone thickening of the inner nasal bones in tuberous sclerosis].

BACKGROUND: Patients with tuberous sclerosis (Morbus Bourneville-Pringle) may show hamartomatous tumors of different organ systems. 50% of patients display astrocytic hamartomas of the retina. The skeletal system is affected in 40%: peri-, en- or exostoses, or cysts may occur. To the best of our knowledge, there are only three descriptions of an involvement of the facial skeleton in the literature. PATIENT: A 54-year-old man presented with recurrent dacryocystitis and lacrimal duct obstruction. Tuberous sclerosis and epilepsy were present since childhood. Besides typical skin lesions and intr

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type extensively involving the bone marrow.

Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, is an aggressive EBV-associated lymphoma that mainly involves the nasal cavity but has also been reported to involve other extranodal sites without nasal involvement. In contrast to aggressive NK cell leukemia (a marrow-based aggressive leukemia of NK-cell origin); extensive bone marrow and blood involvement is extremely uncommon by nasal type NK/T lymphoma. We report a patient with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type that developed extensive bone marrow involvement during the course of her disease with some overlapping features with aggressive

An absolute vascular milieu for primary bone graft in aesthetic nasal reconstruction.

Restoration of a composite nasal defect with an aesthetically acceptable vascularized full-thickness soft tissue cover and a primary bone graft in a surgically unscarred area at the same stage requires that the flap have a complete formal inset from all the sides, for enhancement of the milieu interior. This article addresses such a situation, which required the use of a cantilever bone graft simultaneously with an interpolated midline forehead flap based on the supratrochlear vessel and transferred on a deepithelialized bridge segment, which allowed an absolute inset from all the sides.
