Nasopharygeal amyloidosis is a rare entity described in the otolaryngology literature. It is usually isolated and does not represent a manifestation of systemic disease. Herein we discuss the first reported case of incidentally discovered nasopharyngeal amyloidosis leading to the diagnosis of systemic disease. A patient presented to the otolaryngology clinic with complaints of otalgia and eustachian tube dysfunction. He was noted to have a unilateral middle ear effusion and subsequent nasolaryngoscopy demonstrated a right nasopharyngeal mass at the eustachian tube orifice--this was biopsied an

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare, benign vascular tumor originating from the sphenopalatine foramen. It primarily affects adolescent males. Due to its propensity to locally destructive growth, the tumor may lead to fatal epistaxis, intracranial extension, and life-threatening complications such as intraoperative hemorrhage. Many treatment modalities have been used for the management of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, but surgery and external beam radiation therapy have proved to be the only effective treatment modalities with acceptable morbidity. While endoscopic surgery provides successful

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a unique and complex etiology that is not completely understood. Although NPC is rare in most populations, it is a leading form of cancer in a few well-defined populations, including natives of southern China, Southeast Asia, the Arctic, and the Middle East/North Africa. The distinctive racial/ethnic and geographic distribution of NPC worldwide suggests that both environmental factors and genetic traits contribute to its development. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge regarding the epidemiology of NPC and to propose new avenues of research th

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors account for less than 5% of all neoplasms in the head and neck, with pleomorphic adenoma being the most common type. These typically arise in the palate, but we report a rare case of nasopharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma in an adult.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors conducted a case report and literature review.
RESULTS: The patient presented with unilateral otalgia, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Nasal endoscopy revealed a pedunculated mass adjacent to the left torus tubarius and he was treated with an excisional biopsy. Histologic evaluation demonstrated p

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a characteristic tumor displaying epidemiological, genetic and regional distribution properties and is unique by its natural behavior and therapy. Investigation of the molecular and biological changes, gene amplifications and activations that occur during carcinogenesis and progression can provide new insight into the pathology of the disease and may add biological factors that can be used as new prognostic markers. The p53 tumor suppressor gene is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancer. Although point mutations in the p53 gene are observed in nasoph

PURPOSE: To review the clinical profiles of patients having nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) with orbital invasion, which occurs more frequently in patients with Chinese and south-east Asian racial backgrounds. Although this disease frequently spreads superiorly to the skull base and intracranium, it rarely invades the orbit and we wish to examine some cases in which it has.
METHODS: In this observational case series, we examined 406 patients, who were diagnosed with orbital tumour at Taipei Veterans General Hospital between January 1974 and December 2001. In all, 13 of the patients (11 males,

Somatostatin receptors (SS-Rs) are expressed in neuroendocrine tumour tissues where they can be targetted for diagnosis and therapy. This study investigated the presence of SS-Rs in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a common cancer in South-East Asia. Nasopharynx biopsy specimens were obtained from 12 NPC patients and 5 patients without tumours. Somatostatin receptor autoradiography was performed using (125)I-labelled [Tyr(3)]-octreotide and (125)I-labelled [Leu(8), DTrp(22), Tyr(25)]-somatostatin-28 as radioligands. Of the 12 NPC samples 9 showed moderate to high expression of SS-Rs. These were

We report a case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with Chest Metastasis in a 38-year-old man. The patient presented with nasal obstruction, epistaxis, a huge neck mass and conductive hearing loss in the right ear. Examination under anaesthesia revealed a mass in the nasopharynx, which was confirmed on histology to be squamous carcinoma. He responded remarkably well to external radiotherapy with disappearance of primary tumor and neck metastasis. One year later he presented with thoraco-lumbar spine pain and cough. The nasopharynx and neck remained free of tumor while radiographs demonstrated multip

OBJECTIVE: To report nasopharyngeal stenosis following UPPP and our treatment experience.
METHOD: Two clinical cases were analysised.
RESULT: In this paper, the complications were attributed to excessive excision palapharyngeal arches, which juried mucous membrane of nasopharyngeal inlet during the long management time as bleeding and the laser used. Surgical management was performed in two cases. One failed. One was treated successfully by rotation palato-pharyngeal flap and prolonged nasopharyngeal stent, Follow-up 20 months there was no recurrence of stenosis.
CONCLUSION: Surgical correc

The incidence of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis is exceedingly rare. To our knowledge, only 1 case has been reported previously. This article presents 4 cases of actinomycosis involving the nasopharynx that imitated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Acidic gas exposure and farming of aquatic products are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis. Patients in the case studies completely recovered after 4 weeks of oral antibiotic treatment. We recommend including actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal neoplasms.

In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the MRI features of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in 72 patients who underwent MRI before and after gadolinium injection. Recurrent NPC exhibited a high degree of regional spread and a variety of signal intensities and contours. MRI showed a nasopharyngeal mass in 50 patients (69.4 %); other sites of involvement included the parapharyngeal space (44.4 %), nasal cavity (12.5 %), paranasal sinuses (27.8 %), oropharynx (4.2 %), orbit (8.3 %), infratemporal fossa (18.1 %), skull base (59.8 %), intracranial area (51.4 %) and regional lymph nodes

The present overview is based on recent available information on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) from various parts of the world including India. The available data suggests that NPC is a rare tumour in most parts of the world. But the incidence is higher in China and South East Asia and also among the Chinese wherever they have migrated. NPC is also relatively higher especially among the mongoloid group of the people in the North Eastern Region of India as compared to other parts of the country. The distinct geographical and ethnic distribution of NPC have stimulated much research to find out

BACKGROUND: This study was done to investigate the size of normal retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RLN) and the incidence of retropharyngeal lymph node involvement in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
METHODS: Forty-four NPC patients who had not yet received treatment and 20 control subjects underwent MRI scanning. The number and the maximum diameter of the short axis of the cervical lymph nodes were measured. The number of nasopharyngeal walls involved and the maximum diameter of the tumor were recorded.
RESULTS: In 5 of 20 control subjects lateral RLN were identified; none of these

To analyze the prognostic value of clinical-radiologic staging, morbidity, mortality and results of treatment used in the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia, Mexico, a retrospective study of angiofibroma was performed. Charts were reviewed from patients who attended the institute from 1977 to 1993. History and physical examination, rhinoscopy and fiber-optic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy were done in every patient. Radiologic evaluation was done with computed tomography, after which Chandler's staging system was used. Disease-free interval curves were estimated for patients who had presented with s

Plain film radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and histologic evaluation were used to diagnose nasopharyngeal epidermal cyst in a 12-year-old male Miniature Poodle with inspiratory stridor. The cyst was lined with stratified squamous epithelium, with variable keratinization. Most of the epithelium was well-differentiated and supported by a fibrovascular tissue separating it from underlying woven bone. One margin of the mass had a transition from stratified squamous to columnar respiratory epithelium. Other reported epidermal cysts in dogs have been confined to the middle ear or intracrani
