Langerhans cell sarcoma of the nasopharynx: a rare case.

Langerhans cell sarcoma, a tumour with markedly malignant cytological features that originates from Langerhans cells, is a very rare disease. We report the first case of 39-year-old male with Langerhans cell sarcoma arising in the nasopharynx. We chose the 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine (2-CDA) regimen as first-line chemotherapy, and clinical improvement of Langerhans cell sarcoma was obtained. After the fourth cycle of 2-CDA therapy, however, disease progression was observed, and we administered ESHAP regimen (etoposide, carboplatin, cytarabine, methylprednisolone) as a second-line therapy. After we

Myeloid sarcoma of the nasopharynx mimicking an aggressive lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extra-medullary tumour of the myeloid lineage, which can be a difficult diagnosis to make. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 73-year-old male with a right-sided nasopharyngeal mass revealed on CT scan and MRI. RESULTS: An initial cytological and histological examination suggested a high-grade lymphoma. Nevertheless, the final diagnosis was a MS with an unusual involvement of the nasopharynx that was treated with a conventional induction leukemia therapy. Eight months later, the patient had persistent thrombocytopenia and a bone marrow aspir

Influence of bacterial interactions on pneumococcal colonization of the nasopharynx.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a common commensal inhabitant of the nasopharynx and a frequent etiologic agent in serious diseases such as pneumonia, otitis media, bacteremia, and meningitis. Multiple pneumococcal strains can colonize the nasopharynx, which is also home to many other bacterial species. Intraspecies and interspecies interactions influence pneumococcal carriage in important ways. Co-colonization by two or more pneumococcal strains has implications for vaccine serotype replacement, carriage detection, and pneumonia diagnostics. Interactions between the pneumococcu

AIDS-related primary Kaposi sarcoma of the nasopharynx.

Primary nasopharyngeal Kaposi sarcoma is extremely rare, as only 1 case has been previously reported in the literature. We report a new case, which occurred in a 37-year-old man with a known history of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The patient presented with complaints of recurrent epistaxis and postnasal hemorrhage. Endoscopic examination detected a bluish, smooth, firm, nonpulsatile mass in the nasopharyngeal wall. Histopathologic findings on biopsy were consistent with Kaposi sarcoma. The tumor was successfully treated with radiotherapy. Kaposi sarcoma should be considered in

Isolated Sphenoid Pyocele with Thornwaldt's Cyst of Nasopharynx.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from observational comparative effectiveness research (CER) is ranked below that from randomized controlled trials in traditional evidence hierarchies. However, asthma observational CER studies represent an important complementary evidence source answering different research questions and are particularly valuable in guiding clinical decision making in real-life patient and practice settings. Tools are required to assist in quality appraisal of observational CER to enable identification of and confidence in high-quality CER evidence to inform guideline development. METHOD

Congenital salivary gland anlage tumor of the nasopharynx.

Nasal and upper respiratory tract obstruction in the neonatal period can result from a variety of conditions, and may be present with variable symptoms. Salivary gland anlage tumor, also referred as congenital pleomorphic adenoma, is a very rare benign congenital tumor of the nasopharynx, which may produce nasal obstruction and other associated, nonspecific symptoms. We report a case of congenital salivary gland anlage tumor causing a severe neonatal respiratory distress with pulmonary hypertension. The tumor was removed and the outcome was favourable without recurrence at five years of the fo

Hamartomas, papillomas and adenocarcinomas of the sinonasal tract and nasopharynx.

Lesions of the sinonasal tract are uncommon, with most of the specimens seen by surgical pathologists consisting primarily of fragments of inflamed sinonasal mucosa or inflammatory polyps from patients with chronic rhinosinusitis, and the occasional squamous cell carcinoma. Other lesions such as hamartomas, various types of Schneiderian papillomas and adenocarcinomas are seen only rarely by most histopathologists; therefore a biopsy or surgical resection specimen from a patient with one of these processes may represent a diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the pathologic

Growth of the nasopharynx and adenoidal development in Brazilian subjects.

The purpose of this research was to study the growth of the nasopharynx and adenoid development. Lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from 320 white Brazilian subjects between 4 and 16 years of age were used. All the participants were nose breathers and none of them had previously undergone adenoidectomy. Tracings were made from the radiographs and cephalometric measurements were performed. The results showed that adenoid sagital thickness is larger in the age group 4 - 5 years and decreases progressively. There is a slight increase in the age group 10 - 11 years, but afterwards the decr

Congenital salivary gland anlage tumor of the nasopharynx.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal and upper respiratory tract obstruction in the neonatal period can result from a variety of conditions, and may present with variable symptoms. In the absence of dysmorphic features or other abnormalities, causes of nasal obstruction may be difficult to differentiate on initial examination. We report an unexpected and potentially life-threatening condition arising during the work-up of this common neonatal complaint. DESIGN: Case report with literature review. RESULTS: A male neonate presented with complaints of nasal obstruction and feeding difficulties. A common diagnostic

Pituitary adenomas with infra-sellar extension into the nasopharynx.

Three cases of pituitary adenomas with infra-sellar extension into the nasopharynx and the nasal cavities are reported. The clinical signs were epistaxis, nasal obstruction, painful sinuses and purulent rhinorrhoea. The initial diagnostic hypothesis was that of a carcinoma of the nasopharynx or the sinuses in all three cases. The diagnosis was made by histological examination and measurement of plasma hormone levels. These cases highlight the difficulty in the diagnosis of such tumours due to their misleading clinical, radiological and histological features.

Peculiar enlargement of the nasopharynx in patients with anorexia nervosa.

We examined the nasopharynx and brain in 17 patients with anorexia nervosa by CT and compared the findings with those of 44 normal subjects and of 5 patients of the same age with marked emaciation caused by various psychiatric disorders. An enlarged nasopharyngeal space with a flattened posterior wall and enlarged lateral pharyngeal recesses were demonstrated in all patients with anorexia nervosa whose weight was lowest at the time of the CT examination, and these CT features regressed or became normal quickly after they had gained some weight. This characteristic enlargement of the nasopharyn

Magnetic resonance imaging of the nasopharynx and skull base.

Ten patients with a normal nasopharynx and 36 patients with pathology of the nasopharynx or skull base were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Four millimeter thick axial, coronal, and often sagittal scans were obtained using SE 500/28 and SE 2000/56 pulse sequences. The normal scans were compared with cadaver cryosections. Correlation was made with computed tomography (CT) scans as well as with clinical history and physical examination whenever possible. MRI clearly provided superior information compared with CT and other imaging studies. Advantages of MRI over CT include 1) the d

Computed tomography of the nasopharynx: normal and variants of normal.

In 52 normal nasopharyngeal computed tomographic (CT) scans the various tissue planes deep to the mucosa were always seen and appeared symmetric. The superficial structures were more often asymmetric; however, by using physiologic maneuvers, coronal scanning, and this very reliable deep plane anatomy, a highly accurate interpretation is possible. A knowledge of these simple scanning techniques and of the range of normal anatomy will help radiologists avoid the equivocal and false-positive interpretations that plague other radiographic studies of this area. Because of its deep plane information

Bacterial adherence to epithelial cells in the nasopharynx in children.

The presence of attached bacteria to epithelial cells from the nasopharyngeal surface of the soft palate, from the adenoid surface and from the secretions covering the adenoid was studied in 10 children undergoing adenoidectomy. Large numbers of bacteria were seen to attach to mature normal squamous epithelial cells from the soft palate and in the secretions, whereas attachment to adenoid epithelial cells was rare. Using differential interference contrast microscopy, bacteria-carrying epithelial cells were seen to have their surface covered by microridges characteristic of normal mature squamo

[Carcinoma of the nasopharynx (cavum) : clinical and developmental aspects].

Between 1959 and 1974, two hundred and ninety six carcinomas of the nasopharynx were seen at the Institut Gustave-Roussy, in adults. 78% were in man. The most frequently encountered were undifferentiated or poorly differentiated forms, 76% of cases. 38% only of the patients had their birthplace in France. On the first examination 36% of the cases had a T4 tumour, 50% had fixed cervical lymph nodes and 77% had distant metastases. 30% of the cases could not be treated following a protocol attempting complete cure. Since 1970 the Iridium method of irradiation is not used in T1 and T2 cases and al

Association of nasopharynx cancer with obstructive sleep apnea.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the extensive research conducted on the association between OSA and HNCs, the specific relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has received comparatively less attention. The present study aimed to explore the association between OSA and NPC. METHODS: The data for this study was drawn from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010. The study incorporated a total of 3,235 NPC patients and 12,940 propensity score-matched controls. The NPC and controls' baseline clinical and demographic parameters were compared using standa
