OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the factors associated with the presence of active white enamel lesions among public school students in the city of Natal, Brazil.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 300 boys and girls aged between 7 and 12 years was selected among the pupils attending public schools in the city of Natal. Only those children presenting with opaque and rough-surface white lesions in a region of biofilm accumulation on the vestibular surface of permanent upper incisors were included. The investigation took the form of a cross-sectional study. A chart containing indiv

BACKGROUND: Riga-Fede disease (RFD) is a benign inflammatory disorder characterised by the appearance of a traumatic ulceration of the oral mucosa. Early detection of RFD and its adequate management are very important.
CASE REPORT: The authors present a an unusual case of RFD with concomitant Staphylococcus aureus meningitis. A 36-day-old female infant was referred to the emergency room of the Hospital of the University of Siena for a 4-day history of high fever. Clinical evaluation revealed the presence of lingual ulceration caused by natal tooth. Few hours later, clinical manifestations wer

A 5-year-old girl presented with extensor hyperkeratotic papules and subungual hyperkeratosis with nail-plate discoloration affecting all twenty nails. The mother reported that her daughter had natal teeth. By report, the father has a similar history and constellation of clinical findings. The patient's clinical presentation and history was consistent with pachyonychia congenita, which is a genodermatosis linked to mutations in the genes encoding keratins 6, 16, and 17.

Objectives: Early observations often fail to detect anomalies that may impact the health and quality of life of newborns. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of oral anomalies in newborns and explore their possible associations with sociodemographic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Quito, Ecuador, analyzing a sample of 241 newborns. The presence of oral anomalies was recorded, and their association with sex, birth weight, maternal age, and gestational factors was evaluated. Results: The prevalence of oral anomalies was 72.3%, with Epstein's pearls being the m

Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome (WRS) is a neonatal progeroid disorder characterized by growth retardation, lipodystrophy, a distinctive face, and dental anomalies. Patients reported to date demonstrate a remarkable variability in phenotype, which hampers diagnostics. We performed a literature search, and analyzed 51 reported patients, using the originally reported patients as "gold standard." In 15 patients sufficient information and photographic evidence was available to confirm the clinical diagnosis. In 12 patients the diagnosis was suggestive but lack of data prevented a definite diagnos

The eruption cyst (EC) occurs within the mucosa overlying a tooth that is about to erupt. In the past EC was considered a type of dentigerous cyst (DC) occuring in the soft tissues. Twenty four patients (mean age 4.44 years, range 1.0 month-12 years) with EC were diagnosed and treated. EC was associated with natal teeth in two (8.3%) cases, with primary teeth in 10 (41.6%) cases and with permanent teeth in 12 (50%) cases. There was a gender predilection, the male to female ratio was 2:1. The primary mandibular central incisors and the permanent first molars were the most common site affected.

Sublingual traumatic ulceration is a rare inflammatory disorder characterized by benign, ulcerative, and granulomatous processes and caused by repetitive trauma from mandibular anterior incisors to the mucosa of the ventral surface of the tongue. Historically known as the Riga-Fede disease, sublingual ulceration is associated with natal and neonatal teeth in newborns and infants. Even cases have been reported of Riga-Fede disease associated with the eruption of mandibular primary incisors. Commonly, the treatment for Riga-Fede disease is the smoothening of incisal edges or the extraction of of

AIM: The aim of this study is to present a case of Riga-Fede disease (RFD). RFD is a benign and uncommon mucosal disorder, characterized by an ulceration of the tongue, often caused by repetitive traumatic injuries due to backward and forward movements of the tongue over the mandibular anterior incisors. RFD is most commonly associated with the eruption of primary lower incisor in older infants or natal-neonatal teeth in newborns.
METHODS: A 2-month-old female infant was referred to our Paediatric Dentistry Unit for ulceration (13 mm diameter) on the ventral surface of the tongue and neonatal

In the African Pleistocene, the fossil evidence for early Homo sapiens populations is still relatively limited. Here we present two additional specimens (two deciduous teeth) recovered from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits of Sibudu Cave (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa). We describe their morphology and metrics, using three-dimensional models of the teeth obtained from high-resolution micro-CT images. The first specimen is a Ldm₁ (HUM. TO 1) recovered in the BS5 layer dated 77.3±2.7 ka, and associated with stone tools assigned to the "pre-Still Bay" assemblage. The other specimen is a Rdi₁ (HU

Oral findings in 45 patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome living in The Netherlands are compared with those from the literature. The main non-dental findings were thin upper lip, small oral opening, pouting lower lip, retro/micrognathia, and apparently higher arched, narrow palate. Cleft uvula, cleft palate, or, rarely, cleft upper lip can be part of the syndrome. Timing of the eruption of deciduous and permanent dentition is normal. Sixty-two percent of patients have malpositioned, crowded teeth. Marked caries was found in 36% and was possibly caused by problems in dental care due to the sm

Neuroblastoma is an uncommon cause of a mandibular mass. We describe an 8-month-old child who presented with loosening of his dentition, poor oral intake, and a large mandibular mass. Thorough radiographic study and subsequent biopsy of the oral lesion revealed the diagnoses of metastatic neuroblastoma. Ultimately, he was successfully treated with surgery and chemotherapy. The unusual presentation and pathophysiology of this malignancy will be reviewed. Neuroblastoma presenting as a mandible mass associated with natal teeth is rare, but it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of

Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome (WRS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that includes premature aging phenotype at birth. The condition is also known as a neonatal progeroid syndrome. Up to now only a few published case reports have been documented. The syndrome is characterized by progeroid appearance, decreased subcutaneous fat, hypotrichosis, macrocephaly, and in some natal teeth. We describe a new patient with features of bilaterally pelvicalyceal ectasia and partial syndactyly on 2th and 3th toes, not previously described, to our knowledge.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic skin disorder due to a mutation in any one of the five keratin genes, KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, or KRT17. The main features are palmoplantar keratoderma, plantar pain, and nail dystrophy. Cysts of various types, follicular hyperkeratosis, oral leukokeratosis, hyperhidrosis, and natal teeth may also be present. Four unrelated Indian families presented with a clinical diagnosis of PC. This was confirmed by genetic testing; mutations in KRT17 were identified in all affected individuals.

While most supernumerary teeth are idiopathic, they can be associated with a number of Mendelian syndromes. However, this can also be a coincidental finding, since supernumerary teeth occur in 6% or more of the normal population. To better define this relationship, we analyzed the evidence for specific associations. We excluded conditions with a single affected patient reported, supernumerary teeth adjacent to clefts or other forms of alveolar disruption (as secondary rather than primary findings), and natal teeth, which can involve premature eruption of a normal tooth. Since, the cause of sup

Pachyonychia congenita is a group of autosomal dominant inheritance pattern disorders characterized by hypertrophic nail dystrophy There are two main clinical subtypes: type 1 and 2. Pachyonychia congenita type 2 is readily differentiated from type 1 by multiple steatocysts and/or presence of natal teeth and can be confirmed by mutations of KRT6B and KRT17. We report the case of a 33-year-o/d female patient with the missense mutation in KRT17 gene (c.280C> T, p.Arg94Cys) and discuss the several clinical features found with this mutation in the literature.

Pyknodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the post natal onset of short limbs, short stature, and generalized hyperostosis along with acro-osteolysis with sclerosis of the terminal phalanges, a feature that is considered essentially pathognomonic. Other features include persistence of fontanelles, delayed closure of sutures, wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, and obtuse mandibular gonial angle with relative mandibular prognathism. We report a case of 17-year-old girl who presented with a chief complaint of retention of deciduous teeth. General physical exa

BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a group of autosomal dominant keratinizing disorders caused by a mutation in one of 4 keratin genes. Previous classification schemes have relied on data from case series and case reports. Most patients in these reports were not genetically tested for PC.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to clarify the prevalence of clinical features associated with PC.
METHODS: We surveyed 254 individuals with confirmed keratin mutations regarding their experience with clinical findings associated with PC. Statistical comparison of the groups by keratin mutation was performed u

BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a group of autosomal dominant disorders caused by mutations in one of five keratin genes (KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, KRT17). The establishment of an international registry containing clinical and molecular data led to the development of a disease classification based on the mutant gene and associated features.
OBJECTIVES: To harness the same resource to clarify the prevalence of PC-associated clinical features, delineate phenotype-genotype correlations and identify prognostic features for disease severity.
METHODS: In total, 815 individuals with co

Benign congenital anomalies are common in neonates. Some of these common benign congenital anomalies include preauricular pits, sacral dimples, supernumerary digits, accessory nipple, and natal teeth. It is important for health care providers who take care of newborns to recognize these benign anomalies so that unnecessary evaluations and investigations are not performed. However, some of these anomalies may be associated with clinically significant conditions. In this article, we discuss when further evaluation should be performed in babies presenting with these common benign congenital anoma
