Association between early natural disaster exposure and temperament among Indian preadolescents.

BACKGROUND: Early developmental stages are critical for shaping later life personality traits, such as, temperament. Exposure to natural disasters, as an independent source of prenatal maternal stress, can influence child behavioural outcomes. The pioneering and the other studies on prenatal maternal stress from disasters were conducted in Western societies. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the association of exposure to a severe ND, during prenatal and early postnatal stage, with temperament in preadolescent Indian children. METHOD: We assessed temperament using the EAS Temperament

Building Resilient Radiotherapy Systems: Lessons and Recommendations for Natural Disaster Risk Mitigation.

Natural disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and severe winter storms, along with related technological failures such as prolonged power outages or even nuclear incidents, pose significant risks to radiotherapy continuity, where treatment interruptions are associated with compromised tumor control and survival outcomes. Since natural disasters are inevitable, building resilient radiotherapy systems requires systematic learning from prior disasters and proactive risk management. In this narrative review, we synthesized published literature, incident reports, and oper

Fostering Resilience: Community-Led Natural Disaster Mitigation in Eastern North Carolina.

Eastern North Carolina fosters communities that are culturally and geographically diverse and embody a strong sense of identity, resilience, and interconnectedness. However, the region's rural landscape and economic challenges contribute to the area being disproportionately affected by recurring natural disasters, including hurricanes and tropical storms. These natural disasters have a cumulative impact, exacerbating pre-existing social, economic, and health inequities. By expanding local knowledge, supporting culturally competent partnerships, and addressing structural inequities, more equita

Natural disaster-induced dementia and cognitive decline: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

Recently, some studies have noted a negative cognitive impact on individuals in the aftermath of large-scale natural disasters; however, the causal relationship between disasters and cognitive/neurodegenerative effects remains widely unexplored. This review analyzes the impact of natural disasters on the development of cognitive decline (CD), all-cause dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in disaster-affected individuals. Studies reported from their inception to August 2023 were obtained via public online databases. All data presented in this review was derived from precalculated study resul

Three cases in Japan occurred by natural hazards and lessons for Natech disaster management.

Due to recent climate change, highly-connected society, and the centralization of hazardous materials, Natech is a matter of the growing concern. As Natech disasters occur with low frequency, those in charge of facilities should learn lessons from past cases to prepare for situations in the future in which they may have to respond to a potentially catastrophic event for the first time. This paper describes three Natech cases triggered by the heavy rainfall in Japan in 2018. One resulted in violent explosions, one showed consequences half a year later, and the other managed to avoid a catastrop

Prenatal maternal stress from a natural disaster predicts dermatoglyphic asymmetry in humans.

Dermatoglyphic asymmetry of fingertip ridge counts is more frequent in schizophrenia patients than normal controls, and may reflect disruptions in fetal development during Weeks 14-22 when fingerprints develop. However, there are no data in humans linking specific adverse events at specific times to dermatoglyphic asymmetries. Our objective was to determine whether prenatal exposure to a natural disaster (1998 Quebec ice storm) during Weeks 14-22 would result in increased dermatoglyphic asymmetry in children, and to determine the roles of maternal objective stress exposure, subjective stress r

The utility of handheld ultrasound in an austere medical setting in Guatemala after a natural disaster.

OBJECTIVE: To identify equipment needs, utility, clinical applications, and acuity of diagnoses made by hand-carried ultrasound (HCU) after a natural disaster. METHODS: An HCU with four probes (curved array, linear array, phased array, and endocavitary) was taken to the site of a natural disaster in Guatemala as part of the relief effort after mudslides killed approximately 1,000 people. Ultrasound (US) scans were classified by transducer type, anatomic region, presenting complaint, and therapeutic urgency of treatment. RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients received 137 US: 58 pelvic, 34 right upper

Status of natural disaster victims' health and recovery 1 and 3 years later.

Bereaved, property loss, and control groups (N = 155) studied 11 months following the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens were recontacted 35 months postdisaster to test the hypotheses that the greater the loss experienced, the higher the stress, and the poorer the health. In general, the hypotheses were supported. Even though mental distress decreased between the two data collection periods, the mental health of the bereaved group remained poorer than both the property loss and control groups. At 3 years postdisaster, only 4% of the study participants reported complete recovery from disa

Unwelcome Natural Experiments: Cancer Etiologic Insights from Disaster-Exposed Populations.

Enough time has now elapsed to examine the long-term cancer burden among survivors of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In the June 8, 2026, issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, and Prevention, Turner and colleagues reported a 1.8-fold higher cancer risk among 4,815 male World Trade Center responders compared with age-matched controls, with those of 20 to 44 years at the time of attacks at the highest cancer risk. This finding is one of several "unwelcome natural experiments" in which catastrophic disasters have unintentionally advanced cancer epidemio

Increased incidence of domestic animal bites following a disaster due to natural hazards.

INTRODUCTION: During deployment following Hurricane Ike in September 2008, bites from domestic animals were among the top three trauma complaints seen at the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) base of operations. PROBLEM: Unlike previous reports of frightened, misplaced dogs and cats biting strangers and rescue workers, there was an increase in bites associated with presumed non-rabid pets who were known to the bite victim. METHODS: This was an observational sampling of all patients presenting for medical care during deployment to the AL-3 DMAT ba

The course of PTSD, major depression, substance abuse, and somatization after a natural disaster.

Flood research has used a variety of methods, yielding inconsistent findings. Universal definitions of illness are paramount to the science of psychiatric epidemiology of disasters. St. Louis area survivors (N = 162) of the Great Midwestern Floods of 1993 received a structured diagnostic assessment at 4 and 16 months postdisaster, with 88% follow-up. The purpose of the assessment was to examine predisaster and postdisaster rates of disorders and symptoms. Flood-related posttraumatic stress disorder was diagnosed in 22% and 16% at index and follow-up, respectively. Comorbidity with major depres

[Basic measures for prevention of the epidemiological consequences of a natural disaster in the North Caucasus in 2002].

The system of organizational and prophylactic measures, carried out with a view to prevent epidemiological aggravations in connection with the natural calamity in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation in 2003, is described. Proposals on the improvement of the system of preventive measures, including the monitoring of the epidemiological, sanitary and hygienic situation, personnel training, technical provision, the cooperation of different services and departments, capable of ensuring the liquidation of the consequences of emergency situations of the natural character, are mad

Exploring the impact of a natural disaster on the health and psychological well-being of older adults.

The failure of researchers to consider the temporal dimensions of the stress process may be at least partially responsible for the disappointing empirical findings from research on stress and health. We argue that careful consideration must be given to the time lag between the occurrence of a stressor and initial symptom development, as well as the length of time that is required for symptoms to abate. Using a synthetic cohort design, we examine the length of time needed for symptoms to dissipate following a natural disaster (Hurricane Alicia). Findings from a random community survey of older

The Impact of Natural Disasters on Adult Mental Health: An Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.

This umbrella review systematically synthesises the evidence on the impact of natural disasters on adult mental health from existing systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses. Nine electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses published between 2008 and 2024. The Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the study. Of the 16 included systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses, most of the time, they described the impact of natural disasters generally as a mix of any natural disaster, ear

Natural disasters and the rise of zoonotic diseases: A case of post-earthquake disseminated cryptococcosis in a dog.

Cryptococcosis is a systemic zoonotic disease that is challenging to diagnose based on clinical findings in cats and dogs due to the nonspecific nature of its clinical presentation. This case report aims to document the first confirmed case of disseminated cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans in a dog in Turkey and to highlight the potential link between natural disasters such as earthquakes and the emergence of zoonotic diseases in domestic animals. A two-and-a-half-year-old spayed female Cocker Spaniel presented with increased respiratory sounds, skin lesions, facial swelling and

Climate change anxiety among psychiatric outpatients: associations with psychiatric symptoms and experience with climate change and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND: Climate change anxiety (CCA) has emerged as a significant psychological response to the global climate crisis. While prior research focuses on general populations, evidence derived from psychiatric clinical samples remains scarce. This study aims to investigate CCA levels and their associations with psychiatric symptoms, resilience, and disaster-related experiences among psychiatric outpatients. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 528 psychiatric outpatients aged 18-64 years at a university hospital in South Korea. The participants completed the Korean version of th

Data quality in an HIV vaccine efficacy clinical trial in South Africa: through natural disasters and with discipline.

BACKGROUND: To produce quality data that informs valid clinical trial results and withstands regulatory inspection, trial sites should adhere to many complex and dynamic requirements. Understanding non-conformance to requirements informs the emerging field of improvement science. We describe protocol deviations in South Africa's largest HIV vaccine efficacy trial. METHODS: We analysed data from the HVTN 702 trial using mixed methods. We obtained descriptive statistics, from protocol deviation case report forms collected from 2016-2022, of deviation by participant, trial site, and time to site
