Contraceptive use by Maori youth in New Zealand: associated risk and protective factors.

AIMS: To identify risk and protective factors associated with consistent contraception use by sexually active Maori youth. METHODS: Secondary analysis was undertaken utilising Youth2000, an anonymous nationally representative secondary school health and wellbeing survey, undertaken in 2001. We describe the self-reported sexual health and contraceptive use behaviours of Maori students. A multiple logistic regression model was utilised to identify risk and protective factors associated with consistent contraception use by sexually active Maori students. RESULTS: Half of the Maori students have

End-of-life care planning for ethnically diverse kidney patients in the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is most prevalent amongst people from minority ethnic groups and people receiving haemodialysis were considered to be ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ during the Covid- 19 pandemic. Covid-19 impacted the health of those from ethnically diverse backgrounds disproportionally. The Covid-19 pandemic brought death and dying to the forefront of public discourse, yet few studies have explored the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on individual’s understanding of and willingness to engage in end-of-life care planning conversations. In addition, few studies ha

Contraceptive use in patients with gender dysphoria who were assigned female at birth receiving care at a specialty gender-affirming clinic.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all patients, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, should be offered family planning and contraceptive options without assumptions of sexual behaviors and pregnancy risk. Current research on family planning services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning patients is limited, but patients who are sexual or gender minorities are at increased risk for unintended pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe contraceptive use in patients assigned female a

Future care planning of adults with childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medicine have increased the life expectancy of adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities (ND). These individuals often reside with aging family caregivers, who also experience age-related health issues. However, many caregivers lack future care plans for their adult children. Thus, there is a pressing need for practical solutions for family-centered future care planning (FCP). AIMS: To summarize the literature on the key components of FCP for adults with ND and their familial caregivers. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This scoping review adhered to the Joanna Briggs Instit

Obstetric-gynecology resident education regarding barrier and over-the-counter contraceptives: a national study.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to assess obstetrics-gynecology resident knowledge about barrier and over-the-counter (OTC) contraceptives and identify strengths and weaknesses in resident education. METHODS: We developed a survey for distribution among 50 randomly selected U.S. obstetrics-gynecology residency programs. RESULTS: Of 202 respondents, only 57% and 36% of residents reported adequate knowledge to counsel patients regarding latex vs. nonlatex condom use, respectively. Ninety-six percent knew spermicides were nonprotective against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); however,

Tooth resorptions are not hereditary.

Root resorptions caused by orthodontic movement are not supported by consistent scientific evidence that correlate them with heredity, individual predisposition and genetic or familial susceptibility. Current studies are undermined by methodological and interpretative errors, especially regarding the diagnosis and measurements of root resorption from orthopantomographs and cephalograms. Samples are heterogeneous insofar as they comprise different clinical operators, varied types of planning, and in insufficient number, in view of the prevalence of tooth resorptions in the population. Reproductive Health Care in Catholic Facilities: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Given the rise in Catholic ownership of U.S. health care facilities, we aimed to examine reproductive health care provision and patient outcomes. We performed a scoping review, which maps the literature and considers inclusion of studies that are not specifically quantitative. DATA SOURCES: We searched five databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library, ClinialTrials.gov) from inception through August 2018 using terms related to reproductive health care and religion. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: We screened 2,906 studies. Articles were included if in English, incl

Supporting Breastfeeding Women Amid Natural Disasters in the US: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Mothers, particularly those who are breastfeeding, as well as their babies are often overlooked populations during natural disasters. Still, the ever-growing frequency and severity of natural disasters in the United States (US) have increased the likelihood that a breastfeeding family will experience a natural disaster. In 2019, 83% of all newborns received breastmilk, and 84% of Americans lived in an area that recently experienced a natural disaster. This scoping review aimed to identify ways to support breastfeeding women, infants, and young children during a natural disaster. M

Women and postfertilization effects of birth control: consistency of beliefs, intentions and reported use.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the consistency of responses among women regarding their beliefs about the mechanisms of actions of birth control methods, beliefs about when human life begins, the intention to use or not use birth control methods that they believe may act after fertilization or implantation, and their reported use of specific methods. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered in family practice and obstetrics and gynecology clinics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Participants included women ages 18-50 presenting for any reason and women under age 18 presenting f

Factors determining the choice of contraceptive methods at the Family Planning Clinic, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

In a study of 2000 women volunteers seeking contraceptive services at the Family Planning Clinic (FPC), University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, 66.2 per cent chose the intrauterine device (IUD) making it the most common method of contraception. Factors influencing choice of contraceptive methods were advice from friends and family members, intended duration of use and information from the media. Ignorance, fear and unfounded cultural beliefs were factors responsible for the delay in seeking contraceptive advice. The mass media was an important source of information for most of the women.

Sebum-associated type 17 inflammation in atopic dermatitis: a single-cell and in vivo study of body-site immune heterogeneity.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory skin diseases exhibit striking anatomical predilections, yet the mechanisms shaping site-specific immune programs remain poorly understood. Although atopic dermatitis (AD) is classically considered a type 2-driven disease, lesions arising in sebum-rich skin such as the face often show suboptimal responses to type 2-targeting biologics, suggesting the presence of distinct site-specific immune programs shaped by the local tissue environment. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on matched facial and popliteal lesions from adult male patients with

Using the Generalized Synthetic Control Method to Estimate the Impact of Extreme Weather Events on Population Health.

BACKGROUND: Traditional epidemiologic approaches such as time-series or case-crossover designs are often used to estimate the effects of extreme weather events but can be limited by unmeasured confounding. Quasi-experimental methods are a family of methods that leverage natural experiments to adjust for unmeasured confounding indirectly. The recently developed generalized synthetic control method that exploits the timing of an exposure is well suited to estimate the impact of acute environmental events on health outcomes. To demonstrate how this method can be used to study extreme weather even

Use of Reversible Contraceptive Methods Among U.S. Women with Physical or Sensory Disabilities.

CONTEXT: Women with disabilities experience a higher rate of adverse pregnancy outcomes than women without disabilities. Preventing or delaying pregnancy when that is the best choice for a woman is a critical strategy to reducing pregnancy-related disparities, yet little is known about current contraceptive use among women with disabilities. METHODS: A cohort of 545 reproductive-age women with physical disabilities (i.e., difficulty walking, climbing, dressing or bathing) or sensory disabilities (i.e., difficulty with vision or hearing) was identified from among participants in the 2011-2013

Views and experiences of family/whanau carers of psychiatric service users on diagnosis and classification.

BACKGROUND: Family (whanau) and other carers can play a central part in the natural history of psychiatric service users. Diagnoses or the classification of mental disorders play a significant role in communications between clinicians, psychiatric service users, and family. Despite that centrality, the views and experiences of family on the utility of the present classification systems have been little studied. AIMS: This study aimed to document the understanding and opinions of families/whanau on the utility of diagnostic labels as they observed them being applied to their family members. M
